LibertĂŠ, ĂŠgalitĂŠ, fraternitĂŠ
Paris is the first city in Europe that I ever visited. Like so many others, I was and am smitten by Paris. It was love at first sight, really, and weâve been in a long distance relationship ever since. Each time I visit, I return to previously loved spots (one particular patisserie in Montmartre, specifically), but also discover new neighborhoods, new streets, new cafes, and new people.Â
Every act of terror is heartbreaking, inconceivably so. My sadness about the latest attack in France does in no way diminish the sadness of other attacks around the world. But Paris hits closer to home for me, because Iâve walked its streets before. Some of my best friends are French. Some of my best memories are from France. In light of that, Iâm revisiting my top favorite moments from one of my top favorite cities.Â
1. My first time abroad, my aunt and uncle surprise me at the London airport and say that we are heading straight to Paris. So jet lagged that I wish I could tape my eyes open, I am plied with white wine and try foie gras and pate for the first time. I love everything that comes within a foot of my table. I think Iâm now a foodie.Â
2. Sacre Coeur is stunning in person. Aunt Cece tells me Iâm bright eyed and bushy tailed. I take that as a compliment and proceed to be awed.Â
3. At the top of the Eiffel Tower. Iâve never burned so many calories in the same instance or been happier about doing so.Â
4. I eat the single best pastry of anyoneâs entire life. Itâs goat cheese, red pepper and basil encased in a buttery dough. Direct message me if you want the name of this place - I try to keep it secret.Â
5. A few years later, during my semester abroad fall break, someone has the genius idea of booking a 5 AM flight from Pisa to Paris, which means we have to wake up around 2:30 AM in order to catch a local train to catch a local bus. Iâm irritable and starving by the time we arrive. Everyone gets lunch. I get a coconut mint chocolate crepe with ice cream, and I LOVE it.Â
6. Versailles for the first time. The weather could not have been worse. Freezing rain. You may think, âit doesnât look that cold judging by what theyâre wearing.â Thatâs only because we were woefully, embarrassingly unprepared for the cold. (My immune system doesnât really stick it to me until a few days later, when Iâm in Amsterdam, but thatâs another story). It doesnât matter, though, that our toes are numb. Versailles is enchanting. Itâs otherworldly. We canât get enough. Iâm a modern-day Marie Antoinette, I think, with less money, less hair, and less suitors, but close enough.
7. Back at Sacre Coeur. I am delighted that a.) I know what Montmartre is, b.) I know exactly where the basilica is, and c.) I can navigate us there by way of the MusĂŠe Gourmand du Chocolat.Â
8. This photoshoot with the Eiffel Tower worked out much better for me than my first one, which boasted a double chin and poor lighting. After a long day of sight seeing, my friends and I stroll the Seine at night before stopping at a cafe for vin. Our tired, tipsy faces result in hilariously bad pictures. We coin the term âhalf smileâ and then joke about it for at least 6 months.Â
9. Back at Versailles about a year and half later. Yes, the weather was perfect! I am viciously stung by a bee on the bottom of my foot, but manage to laugh it off, because Iâm in heaven and I just spent about 30 euros on delicious cheese. Yep. It was damn good.Â
10. My irrational, longstanding dream to see a show at the Moulin Rouge is fulfilled. Iâm so happy that I tear up during the entirety of the show, and again reconsider whether or not Satin would be a suitable name for a child (or kitten?) after all.Â
I canât wait to go back. Je tâaime, Paris. I am so sorry for your loss. Nous sommes unis.
