8:58pm. Two minutes until Angel said they would be home.

He watched the clock, waiting as the seconds seem to drag by. Dinner was warm in the oven and waiting. The table was set.

David was a worrywart. A part of him always worries when Angel is out alone and driving.

“I’ll always come back to you.” They smile, burying their face in the crook of his neck as he pulled them in for a hug earlier that day.

He trusted them.

But he doesn’t trust everyone else.

9:00pm. He checked his phone.

9:01pm. Lights lit up the driveway, and the familiar sound of tires on gravel made him smile.

Mate. Home.

Trying to appear nonchalant, he sat on the couch. But all that was for naught as he was at the door when he heard their footsteps, not wanting to waste a single second to have them in his arms.

Angel chuckled, dropping their bag to the floor in favour of wrapping their arms around his neck. They took a deep breath, relaxing against him and letting him take most of their weight.

“Welcome home.”

They smiled, closing their eyes and savouring his warmth in the cold evening.

“I’m home.”

They parted, but David kept them close, hands settling around their waist.

That’s when he noticed Angel’s strained expression. They were smiling, but he could see in their eyes that something was wrong.

He cupped their cheek and ran his thumb over their temple.

Angel sighed. There was no use hiding it.

“Got a migraine halfway through driving.”

David frowned.

“It was okay though. The driving, I mean. I’m just…” they winced.

He pulled them forward and let them bury their face in his chest, drowning the light out.

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s not your fault.” They chuckled softly, rubbing his back.

“I know… but I wish I could do more.”

“You already give me more than enough, Davey.”

He grumbled, something he always did when he didn’t have a proper answer.

They stayed there for a moment, lingering in each other’s arms.

Until Angel sniffed the air.

“…roast chicken?”

David nodded, glad at least they were feeling hungry despite the migraine. He loosened his arms and walked them to the kitchen.

“I had it ready for when you’d come home.”

“Davey…” After everything that happened today, small things like this got Angel in the chest.
