@magnumpicactus the sand is on top of really hot coal and is pretty much boiling. The dude is dragging the pot of coffee on it to boil it. Its a traditional turkish way to make turkish coffee and its really good.
i love seeing the amazingly unique, traditional ways different cultures have of achieving the same thing.

CHOCOLATE MAN BACK AT IT AGAIN
i see any large amount of chocolate and my mind just screams âitâs the fucking chocolate man againâ
this bitch knows carpentry, pottery, sculpture, architecture, AND all the chocolate/confectionary skills. what the fuck doesnât he know?????
ppl who limit their reading experience to Fanfics and YA novels donât wanna read literature they wanna consume tropes but let me mind my business
Op look me dead in the eyes and tell me romeo and juliet isnt just forbidden love enemies to lovers angst
Actually itâs a tragic drama with themes about the conflict of the individual will and social customs, and reducing it to a flat two-dimensional analysis of tropes you read on ao3 is boring and would get you kicked out of a 9th grade English class, but I can see where the confusion would lie
In what world is âforbidden enemies to lovers angstâ not a tragic drama about the conflict of the individual will and social customs? âForbiddenâ implies the conflict of the individual will against social customs. âAngstâ implies, but doesnât guarantee, the tragic ending. Thereâs a way people do dialogue about fanfic tropes that does act as though itâs the same every time, and as though everything that could fall under one category is the same thingâbut there are people who do that with things like âthe heroâs journeyâ too.
Idk if I fall totally on either âsideâ here but I donât really like the implication that fanfiction itself never explores deep themes. Iâve read fanfiction that made me sit down with myself and ask questions about how exactly I was defining myself relative to my experiences. Fanfiction writers are writers, writing about human experiences and societal themes whether they mean to or not, and not every instance is successful, but not every book is successful.
People knowing there are certain emotions that tend to pull them into stories isnât new. Iâve had books recommended to me because someone knows how I feel about characters who were doomed before a story starts, or stories with unconventional ways of wrangling with death.
I think itâs okay if people recommend their friend a book because âyouâll like this character because they really want to prove themself,â the way casual book recs tend to go, latching onto something you know is an emotional hook your friend likes exploring. I see literally no problem, then, with the equally brief and snappy selling point being âyouâll like this because you like enemies to lovers angst.â
I get frustrated by posts that reduce the concept of a recurring theme or trope to something that just goes the same way every time, sure. And yet: recommending each other books via AO3 tags is âI think you will like this book because it contains something you like.â People are seeking the emotions they want from literature, and some are using familiar language to draw themself into a different set of media that they want to get to know better. (Others are probably already reading a lot of published books!)
I see no conflict with wanting to read a certain kind of story because you like that kind of story. Weâve acknowledged, in fact, that anything describable as âenemies to lovers angstâ wonât, in fact, be that simple. So reading a lot of books that qualify as that will explore different themes and angles every time, right? This is as ~doomsday~ as me wanting to read a lot of books about characters navigating whether or not theyâre their worldâs definition of human and whether or not that matters.
We all have stories we like to seek out. We all already use labels that do not fully represent the complexity of the stories within them: I want to read a tragic romance, a comedy of errors, a bildungsroman. Chill out.
Edit, I figured out what bugged me: Recommendations are not analysis.
So I study literature at a university level. Iâm working on a masterâs. I plan to pursue a Ph.D.
Translating works between mediums *always* comes with interpretation and adaptation. Thereâs a whole field of literary discourse around that. Hell, a professor at my university accepted a shitpost as an assignment because it distilled a play into a single image.
And frankly, ao3 tags give so much information about themes and deliver them in an accessible way. The goal, after all, is to *promote* reading, not gatekeeping so hard you push people out of reading for fun.
Art is, at its core, derivative. And thatâs not an insult. It has to latch onto themes that exist or else nobody can experience it. Works made by humans will always be built on a foundation of humanity. And guess what? ALL literature has tropes.
âRomeo and Juliet isnât forbidden enemies to lovers angst! Itâs [forbidden enemies to lovers angst, but phrased more pretentiously]â
Ah, literature snobs
Not to mention the fact that âgiving people some idea as to what the book is about before they read itâ has been common practice for years. Thatâs literally the whole purpose of the blurb.
Sure, it might not say âforbidden enemies to lovers angstâ, but it might well say:
The Montagues and the Capulets have been at war for generations, so when a Capulet girl falls for a Montague boy, the two teenagers know that they must keep their love a dead secret. But after Romeo gets caught up in the rising tensions between their two families, the couple are torn apart. As the story spins towards its tragic conclusion, Juliet must decide how much she is willing to give up.
⌠Or something of the sort, which basically gives you the same informationâ that they are lovers, that their love is forbidden and that a lot of sad stuff is going to happen.
Iâve always assumed this whole âbooks should use AO3 tagsâ thing to be at least partly a backlash to the current trend where more and more books seem to be scrapping the blurb altogether and replacing it with just a series of quotes:
âA dark gem of a book"â some famous writer.
âYouâll read it again and again"â a journalist.
WINNER OF AN AWARD YOUâVE NEVER HEARD OF
âWtf is it about tho"â an increasingly desperate reader who just wants to know it itâs worth buying a copy.
Like thereâs nothing wrong with wanting to know what a book is about before you sink your time into it.
And if youâre going to be a jackass about fanfiction and YA fiction, just admit youâre a pretentious jackass and donât say âbut let me mind my businessâ as if you didnât just throw your opinion out like somehow it becomes more important than anyone elseâs opinion.
Itâs like saying âwith all due respect butâ - usually that just means kiss my ass youâre an idiot and hereâs why your wrong.
So⌠with all due respect- Go fuck yourself.
No I have no patience for stupidity this morning.
Omg, I can distinctly remember when books went from having an actual plot description in the back/flaps to the previous example.
I distinctly remember picking up multiple books and looking for the plot and not finding it. Where the fuck is the plot. I was so confused. Still is. I donât fucking care about prizes I want to know what the story is about. The Ao3 tag system? PERFECTION
