Hi I’m sorry to butt in but I couldn’t help but feel the way you where talking to him to be slightly rude. I understand that you find him cute but forcing your opinions onto him isn’t going to do anything but make him upset, especially with your tone.
I can understand you’re upset he’s not accepting your opinion, but it’s exactly that, an opinion, he thanked you for the compliment kindly, and politely stated that he didn’t think so, and you trying to force him to accept it is basically trying to make him accept something that makes him feel sick to his stomach. Saying it’s as simple as being modest and should just be accepted is incredibly rude considering the body dysmorphia he’s going through.
I tell him daily to remind him I think he’s gorgeous, but accept that he doesn’t think so himself, knowing it still makes a part of him happy to know I think so, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to yell at him until he accepts it, that wouldn’t make me a good partner it’d be the opposite, that is borderline bullying if you ask me, even if your intentions are good. Especially considering this is a subject that causes him to cry, is causing long periods of sadness, and has been dragging him down for months.
Lots of people struggle with body positivity, some for things you can change, some of things you can change one day, and others for things that will never change. Please accept, yourself, that not everyone will take compliments just because they’re being modest, sometimes it’s not just self esteem either. Some people don’t want to look cute the way they are, some want to look cute the way they wished they looked, not the way that has them dodging mirrors. Please think about this kind of stuff before trying to force people to accept they’re cute when the way they look is literally tearing them down from day to day. It’s just not right, and honestly, I understand you’re trying to be nice, but it can make things worse and you could really end up hurting someone.
Never miss the chance to compliment someone, but if they don’t agree, please think twice before trying to force your “body positivity” onto them, because most of the time they need a bit more then a bit of positivity to help them come out of the place they’re in. Just be kind and know that your compliment probably made them smile weather they agreed or not.
