Karna is an anomaly.
Not the most normal title for a post, I know, but itās something thatās been eating at my brain for a while. My mind has this habit of taking statements that are meant to be taken at face value, or simply left alone, and running with them anyway.
But to get to the point: I mean that statement quite literally. I donāt think Karna belongs in the way his contemporaries do. From the very moment of his conception, everything about his birth was abnormal.
Where the other Pandavas are concerned, Kunti (and Madri, by extension) invoked a specific god, slept with him (or them, I do NOT want to think about the Ashvins right now), and carried the child to term. Their births followed the natural order of things, even with divine intervention in the way.
The same can be said for Krishna, even if his case differs slightly; Vishnu took the reins to fulfill a prophecy concerning his own incarnation in response to mass invocation. The important detail is that Vishnu was invoked, and his avatar was conceived and carried to term by the mother chosen to bear him.
Karnaās case is entirely different. Not only was he not the result of a physical union between Surya and Kunti, but depending on which version you read, he wasnāt even born in the natural senseāhe emerged from Kuntiās ear once his incubation was complete. This was done in response to Kunti's own wishes, namely to preserve her "purity" and leave her unmarked by the union so that she would remain a marriage candidate. Plainly speaking, she asked for Karna to be as untraceable as possible.
Surya, in a sense, bypassed the alchemy of conception and gestation. Karna is an imperfect incarnation of Suryaās divinity because Surya implanted a fraction of his authority into Kunti in response to her wishes, leaving it to be shaped into whatever her human body was naturally programmed to create, without the proper "genes" to reflect it. So he wasnāt born through biological inheritance, he just took the shape of what Suryaās authority should look like in that context.
I know this is a bit abstract, but Iām not entirely sure how else to phrase it. Every other demigod is the reconciliation of two currents: divinity and mortality. Surya, as far as deities go, is especially jarring because heās not just the god of the sun, he is the sun itself, the celestial body as we understand it, rendered in human form so that we can comprehend him.
So the argument here is that divinity needs to be translated through a specific framework before the deity can "safely" exist in the mortal realm, a process supported by the existence of avatars rather than the related god manifesting as is. Karna never went through that due process. Heās basically sunlight condensed into a mortal vessel.
And it goes without saying that trying to contain even a fraction of his authority in a half-baked vessel would have disastrous consequences. Which is exactly what happened.
Karna isnāt just socially out of place, heās ontologically out of place. On some subconscious level, he understands that he doesnāt really belong, but he canāt comprehend why because he spends most of his life in the dark about his true identity. So he spends his entire life trying to scratch an itch that can never go away because of his incomplete nature. On a surface level this is interpreted as a discrepancy in societal stratification, what he was intended to be (a Kshatriya) and what he grew up as (a Suta) because of Kunti's abandonment, but the well obviously runs much deeper.
And in turn, that breeds the deep inferiority complex and obsessive drive for legitimacy that defines him. His need for structure and justice stems from an internal void. He was never "anchored", so he clings to external hierarchies and codes (honor, loyalty, dharma) as ways to stabilize himself. He carries the form of humanity but lacks the fundamental tether that makes one of humanity. He's an imitation of something he can never belong with. Even in FGO, he continues to push himself to embody a certain ideal, because even now, especially now, he's only a fragment of his potential. And that's all he can ever be.
(Not the best examples, but I can't remember where else he mentions his desire to keep growing as a hero at the moment. Feel free to add onto this post if you know what I'm referencing!)
But to shorten an incredibly abstract and headache-inducing post: Karna was never meant to exist within human boundaries because he wasnāt born as a human being should be. Heās left to perpetually struggle to prove something that shouldnāt need proof, because his authority already exists all around him. Because the sun impacts everything.
Karna just never knew his own reach until it was too late.

To all the healthy conscious people: Do not come between me and my sugar. Yes, they are my purpose in life.
Perhaps I have seen too many headcannons on 'Short King Dick grayson' so I wanted to give any possible ao3 author an idea for a hurt comfort story: Him being teased so much it becomes an insecurity and Dick just snapping at anyone (read: jason) who teases him about it until, well. We all know how people snapping at each other ends.

Okay so Bhishma is going somewhere and during the journey he is musing about how itās getting more difficult day by day to manage the princes (understandable, thereās literally 106 of them) and while Yudhisthir can pull it off, he would rather not contribute to his dark circles, so his charioteer offers that his son will volunteer to look after them and when the said son finds out he says āabsolutely fucking notā but in this house we do not give a fuck about what he wants
and thatās how Karn ends up being the caretaker to 106 princes. Oh and Dushala is there too for moral support.
Also, a hurt comfort idea on this: Arjun in his teen years and being rebellious and Karna telling him not to sneak out at night to practise and little 13 year old Arjun fuming and going : "You are noone to order me!" and Karna outwardly showing he does not care but inwardly.......yeah. Truth sucks.

my mother is a gardener of small cruelties. she trims the edges of me till i bleed, she calls it pruning.
i harvest my bruises at dusk purple fruit in the moonlight rose-pickered and fevered, i spill iron into the roots, and watch her garden bloom red from where i bled.
I like the look on people's face when they ask what my motivation for choosing PCB stream and I answer that I have been to the hospital so many times, for so many things, that I am aware of probably 45% of every day diseases, with cause, cure and symptoms memorized.
