i love how the merlin showrunners simply acknowledged the existence of monmouth and malory's version of the arthurian legend and went "hey why don't we make arthur and merlin around the same age and write their relationship as extremely homoerotic?" and they nailed it!! like, they proceeded to give us one of the best and most heartbreaking love stories ever made and they still have us hooked to this day
