Final assemblage for Chris
Project brief:
Use a chair or a similar suitable core structure. This can function as a guide as too the type of objects that you may want to attach with your knots, although it doesn't have to (ie. attach what you want). A chair is a nice ease object to attach or tie other things to. Attach to this core needs to be (1) your collage (2) your speaker (3) at least four other elements (e.g. a shoe or a cloud or a stick or a poem or a...). These four elements need to be tied with 1-of-each knot, and the square lashing. In other words: a different knot and lashing per object/element. (4) at least one more element attached with one of the other ways of attaching two things together as we discussed. YOU MAY NOT use nails/screws/staples.

* * * *
There is a moment after you move your eye away when you forget where you are because youâve been living, it seems, somewhere else, in the silence of the night sky. Youâve been stopped being here in the world. Youâre in a different place a place where human life has no meaning. Youâre not a creature in a body. You exist as the stars exist, participating in their stillness, their immensity.Â

My reason for working would be to grow my self, on a personal as well as financial level. I enjoy working with people, making connections and building relationships. i work in the creative world as it is filled with my kind of people, the art world is all about networking and building connections and i enjoy the constant hype and excitement surrounding it. i would love to own my own gallery one day, it would be an absolute dream to build something from the ground up. the idea of having your own business appeals more to me than working for someone in the long run, i believe you do have slight more freedom to make your own âscheduleâ and you donât have to answer to anyone else really. this however will be in many years to come as you need to gain a lot of experience in the art world, as well as create a name for yourself with a reliable network. i am also however very interested in the secondary art market, which i havenât had work experience in yet. i would be interested in perhaps having a gallery that is strictly for the secondary market only, this is something i would obviously need to navigate further. all in all owning something and allowing it to grow as i invest more of myself into something is a dream i will make come true. i have a huge passion for art, history and curating, the idea of combining it all will be an amazing achievement for me.Â

The Golden Circle
By: S, Sinek
This reading highlights and displays an example of leadership and what it takes to run a successful company. Many people get stuck on the making the brand look aesthetically pleasing, however the company could deliver work that is highly average because they do not know the why.Â
The Golden Circle is a technique used to understand the functioning or leadership of many companies by measuring their success and influences, helping one to identify the âwhyâ, âhowâ and âwhatâ within the companyâs ethos. The reading has a focus on the why in a company and how it is specifically important in creating an aim within the business, providing an insight into why a company has chosen to deliverer a particular service or product. This also applies to the leadership and management of the company, if the leader instills an aim into their employees, giving them the why incentive, it will help empower the individual. Therefore, creating a more harmonized company as the aims and intentions are clear, allowing for it to be purposeful. It is imperative that the company also looks at the why and how the company serves their customerâs why, the product or services offered should have the customers best interests at heart and fit into their lifestyle easily. This also empowers customers as they feel heard, creating a strong connection to the idea of âbrand preferenceâ, which creates the return of said customer.

BS300 Task 5
To intern or not to intern
If I every had to consider the possibility of a freelancing career I don't think I would stick to doing one particular thing. As a freelancer I think I would try offer an array of different skills to get a variety of different incomes. The idea of working as a freelance curator is appealing to me. I would like to be hired by galleries and institutions to curate shows with their artists or source my own. Print making is also a big love of mine so I think I would like to assist a print making artist part-time or host a few print making classes. This would allow me to manage my own time and work relatively flexibly. I am someone who does need to meet up with people and have that as a form of keeping my routine, that is why working for someone or teaching people 2/3 days a week will force me to manage my time better. Working as a freelance curator is something I can do in my own time as I can do all the researching and planning at home/coffee shop and then plan my life around studio visits and any other meetings needed in order to complete the show. The only reservations I have in term of working this way straight out of college is that you most likely already need to be established if you would like to get work at a gallery or institution. The other alternative for me would be to build my own network of artists that would be interested in doing a group show curated by me, we can have an opening night and sell the work with some wine. This way it gives both myself and the artists exposure, however there are a few complications around this, as we need to organise and pay for a venue if our houses can't facilitate it and make sure we have enough people willing to come to cover our costs and still make a potential profit. Despite the negatives, I believe that is the best way to build yourself as a freelance curator straight out of college, it will help build a network and hopefully a growth of interest in pop up curated shows.Â

Build a Network
by Dori Clark
Networking is critical for any industry in terms of building connections and growth. In order to understand networking one needs to put aside the fact that they can make it on their own terms and use networking as a way to grow in there career. The âlone-wolfâ people pride themselves, however they need to step out of the comfort zone and change their perception on networking. In terms of the process of networking, people attending these events are more concerned in terms of the calibre of people and potential work opportunities or connections. It is helpful for the lone-wolf people to make a list of contacts that theyâd be interested in networking, this provides a reason to do so as you meet interesting people. There a sense on unclarity around networking and people can often stagnate in their careers without realising it. The best way is to identify what type of networking you like to partake in or finding another avenue to meet people, like interviewing someone youâre interested in for a blog post. By applying strategies like this it opens up the conversation in terms of networking, it reminds people why connections are so important in growth and by doing this it makes the process more meaningful.

I would love to be a gallerist/curator one day, working alongside artists and making sure the gallery runs smoothly etc. Unfortunately in this line of work it is all about connections and who you know, therefore a lot of the time job wonât be advertised online. The artworld runs on its own network of people and in order for me to get my dream job, Iâm going to have to work really hard to get into the contemporary art scene. I was disappointed by the lack of job opportunities in the artworld advertised online, it only seems to be adds for administrator clerks. This position appeals to me as itâs something Iâve always wanted to do, run a gallery, work with artists, curate and build a career through networking and connecting with people. I have a passion for people and I enjoy making connections and I seem to be good at translating a personâs perspective into a formulated plan, therefore I think curating will be an exciting thing for me as I get to connect to the artist and exhibit their work in order to benefit both the artist and the gallery. The one thing that intimidates me about this position is that it is quite niched and it is very competitive to get a position in a gallery, let alone become a gallerist. Iâm anxious about not making the right connections and networks and I donât end up getting into a gallery, however Iâll then have to realise things happen for a reason and my time will come. I need to know a lot more about management and how to run an gallery as well as more experience in curating and working with artists on shows and understanding that process better. I also think that general working experiences in the artworld will help grow my knowledge more on contemporary art, impacting how I want to work in the scene and where exactly I intersect, aiding me to understand my placement and how I can navigate from there.

Internship plan
SMITH
- Â Â Â I would like to do an internship at Smith gallery in Cape Town. While being an intern I would potentially like to assist the curator, Jana. I would love to get into curating myself so I feel like this gallery will be an amazing introduction into curating and the contemporary art scene in Cape Town. The reason I chose this particular gallery and curator is because I really like how they focus on young practicing artists as well as potential emerging artists. I feel that it sits between a commercial and contemporary gallery space, therefore it will help me gain a better understanding of the artworld and how it functions in terms of the market. Working with a curator could also help me in many ways see things or explore ideas that I would have never thought of in my own work as well as being able to read into other artists work. I am also very interested in seeing how a curator connects with an artist and how closely they work together to produce a show, I find it interesting how someone can exhibit another personâs work yet it still convey the same set of meanings and associations. This internship should be scheduled for the October holiday or for the end of next year when I feel more settled and armed with a little more knowledge on art. In order for me to prepare for this internship I can go to gallery visits or exhibition openings and get to know the curator better, recently while working at art fair I made a connection with the curator and spoke verbally about a potential internship with her at the gallery and we exchanged details in order to make it happen. I now need to contact her again and formulate an email with my CV as well as provide a motivation behind why I would like to intern there.
Fiera Milano exhibitions
- Â Â Â I have recently worked temporarily for the art fair, leading up to it as well as over the course of the fair. In doing this I got a better understanding of the art world and where I would like to go in my career. I would like to do a full internship there and not only work temporarily. I would potentially like to assist the marketing manager or the VIP coordinator of the fair as their type of work appeals to me the most. I would like to schedule this internship for the end of the year as that is when they look for interns to work over the December/January period leading up to the fair as well as after to finish on any admin and preparing for the next art fair. I enjoy making connections with people and being a part of shared ideas in a community, such as the artworld. From working there for a week I got an understanding of the corporate art world and how that is pretty much based off connections and social events. Hence, that is why I would like to do a full internship there as you will be a part of a larger community, be involved in building connections to make events like the art fair happen. In order to apply for this internship I will send my CV and state that I am interested in assisting the Marketing or VIP director of the fair or helping out with any admin they might need, I do know the directors of the fair so I am familiar to them and that might be reassuring for them.
Morne Visagie
- Â Â Â I have a massive passion for print making and the multiple processes that go with it. I would love to intern with Morne and his assistant Cathy Abraham. I have been taught by Morne and really connect with the way he works as our aesthetics are similar. This line of work for me isnât something I would jump at because I feel more suited in the corporate side of the artwork, however I am very interested in working for a printmaker, understanding their process and how to work as an independent artist. This internship can be set up over holidays or on weekends if the artist needs assistance. In order to apply for this internship I can message Morne or Cathy directly and see if it could even be a possibility, if so I will see if I need to send them my CV and go from there.

Overthrowing the Tyranny of the Ideal
By: Quiet Revolution
The inner voice inside year head strives for perfection, although one knows that it is impossible to live out perfection as it is too good to be true on paper. It creates anxiety and fear in people, it makes them question their failures as well as victories. The voice in your head will try and tempt you out of something before even starting, making you feel that the task is too mammoth or extensive to take on. A strong-willed person however, embraces all the hardships, momentum and struggles and views that as growth. There is no point of perfection as it allows for no growth, perfection is described as a vacuum, leaving nothing of value behind. One can still yearn for better, a strong personal never feels that have done their perfect best but know they can do more and push themselves harder in the future. The mentality of âwhatâs next?â motivates a person to move forward and embrace the new challenges life will through their way. The plan is to see yesterdayâs failures as todays success, turning he script and rewriting it. The strong person embraces and saviors the first step to success, taking on the situation with both hands. However, taking on very calculated risks in order to achieve success.
