Missed Connections

I think of all the people I’ve met throughout my life and I wonder if I missed the opportunity to connect with someone I would’ve had something real with or related to. Or maybe they did. Maybe neither of us gave it a shot. Maybe our eyes met, and we recognized something in one another and still chose to walk on by.

I was in the line and I could’ve gone up to you and said, “Hello, what a coincidence to meet you here!” Instead, I stared at you and you caught me staring while you were talking to the man, but you smiled at me, because you also recognized me. And then I took two steps forward and from a distance, you turned around and walked away. I could’ve ran to you, but you could’ve also ran to me.

I deleted your number off my contacts, but Telegram has this annoying feature that if a contact was ever in your phone book at one point, their account will pop up if they sign up with the same number. I could reach out — but I won’t. That’s not really the kind of person that I am.

It’s not pride, it’s prudence.

This isn’t even really about you, you’re just the person whom I had the latest encounter with and that anecdote came to mind as an example.

It’s easier to let go and move forward instead of chasing, “maybes” and “could’ve beens.”
