"Today I couldn't be more grateful to be part of the burgeoning flow arts , hooping and fire dancing communities! There's a revolution coming." ~Liam Spinyang, âŞ#âInfiniteCircles community member . @spinyang Photo credit goes to Brian Sorenson of San Francisco

How long have you been hooping for? And when you first started was performing a goal for you?Â
âI have been hooping for over 2 years now! (Wow doesn't time fly!) I started hooping on April 19th of 2013 and the rest is history! When I first picked up my hoop I had NO idea I would end up performing..let alone performing at Insomniac events with over 40,000 attendees. In fact, performing didn't even cross my mind until almost a year later!â
What events have you performed at so far in 2015?
âSo far this year I've done my weekly event in Boston numerous times, some local showcases, Â Beyond Wonderland Southern California, and just recently EDC New York.â
How was EDC NY different from the others?Â
âEDC New York was its own type of experience!â
âThe production level was amazing. From the stages to the roaming characters... Insomniac really knows how to throw a full experience party. It was pretty similar to Beyond SoCal. But nothing like all the jam band fests I'm used to. I also managed the hoop team for EDC NY too, so that was its own experience in itself as well.â
Did you have a specific routine for EDC or were you freestyle hooping? Which do you tend to do more?
âI was freestylin' in the Dandelion Forest art installation! I would say I freestyle more... but thatâs just because I freestyle at my weekly gig. Pretty much every other performance is mostly or completely choreographed.â
              âI love choreography!âÂ
When it comes to your performance outfits, what are some things that go into planning it? Do you ever dress in character for events?
âAs far as costumes... you just never know! For EDC NY in particular we had to wear all white. That was simple. White eyelashes, a white bob wig, some white make-up, and a white outfits and you're all set! Other times I've gotten costumes made for me by the hiring party or even just provided from a stock of costumes.  I'm also a seamstress so I've made most of my costumes rather than buying if that was the case.âÂ
âOne big tip for costumes... don't forget the details! That is what will separate you from the rest!â
âFalse eyelashes, face paint/make up, wigs, accessories, etc! These are just a few examples.. I've never had to dress in character... but that will change at Electric Forest this yearâ
What are some tips to landing and then planning a performance that aspiring performers may want to know?
            âPractice. Patience. Professional.â
âTo land a gig you need something to give to potential hiring parties. That is an EPK (electronic press kit). This includes (but not limited to) your performance resume, head shots and other photos, demo video, references, website, and contact information. That and an outgoing personality and you're halfway there. I find the gig world is all about who you know so always try to meet as many new people..especially those people at other gigs. Chances are they know someone else that needs entertainment too.â
Where can we expect to see you performing the rest of this year?
âI'm running a couple workshops (Chicago and Madsion). Once I return from that epic road trip I'll be leading the hoop troupe for Spectral Fest in New Hampshire. And later on in the summer I'll be teaching and performing at New England Flow Fest in NH. My hoop troupe, the New England hoop troupe, will be performing and teaching at Back 2 Roots fest too! There's  lots of small stuff in between as always :) busy summer ahead!â
Any advice for new hoopers?
âMy best advice for new hoopers is to practice and practice patience. When I started hooping I never thought just over 2 years later I'd be juggling hoops or clubs or even doing quads or anything like that. Your body is amazing and will surprise you constantly...Â
all you need is a little practice. And a lot of patience.â
