she's the best of us
I honestly think Gen-Z and younger simply does not understand how recent widespread smartphone adoption is.
I am not that old, and I didn't have a smartphone until probably late high school. For most of my life, many if not most people were not walking around with a magic internet machine in their pocket that they pulled out and used constantly for everything.
reblog if you remember having to ration your text messages and accidentally opening the internet on your phone was the end of the world
nothing hits quite like tragic doomed estranged sibling characters
one of the best parts of writing is spending hours in baby name websites searching for cool character names instead of opening your document

sometimes i wonder if we have forgotten that sharing creative work is, fundamentally, a bid for human connection. like I'm not posting art or fic for 'engagement' i'm posting it looking for other sickos to play with! i'd be making it anyway for my own gratification because there's something wrong with me, i'm sharing it hoping we can have something wrong with us together <3
Yesterday, I wrote 2,000 words and was very pleased with myself (my daily average is 800). Then I walked to the train station. Somewhere in that walk, I realized that the plot beat I’d added was Way Off, and I’d need to cut 1,400 of those words. They’re unsalvageable.
I don’t know if I’m more upset about the wasted writing (yeah, I know, no writing is ever really wasted, blah blah) or the fact that my wordcount graph is now ruined? It’s a really basic website, so it doesn’t let me *decrease* the words I’ve added. The only way to solve this is to write that many words in the space of one day AGAIN. Which I don’t want to do!
I don’t drink alone, so I bought myself some M&S Belgian chocolate discs. And ate all of them in an hour.
hello from me & the ever present temptation to take off your skin and walk out into the sea forever
The most interesting question you can ask about any character is not what do they want. it's what do they believe they deserve. because those two things are almost never the same and the gap between them is where your entire story lives. a person can want love completely and believe they don't deserve it and that belief will destroy every good thing that comes toward them in ways they won't even notice they're doing. write the gap. the gap is the character.
absolutely love when you finally reach the fun part of your wip and suddenly every real-world obligation becomes an inconvenience because all you can think about is getting back to your characters and seeing what happens next.

I'm starting over, here!
I've been on Tumblr since 2015 (when I decided to troll two of my friends by liking all their posts without revealing myself. It was a very 2015 thing to do.) After that, I had a blog, and I kept it. I never got fully integrated into the Tumblrina vibe — I was too much an immigrant, I think, having come here late for my age group (was 21 then; 33 now) and usually standing with one foot in fandom instead of both.
(I'm still that way. I'll embrace a fandom with great enthusiasm until I spot people joyfully throwing their entire souls into it, and then I'll pull back, because I will never be able to reach those heights. I'm a dabbler, I think.)
But now I want to do something here, just for my own... edification? peace of mind? scribbly urges? There aren't many online areas that give words the same weight as videos anymore. And if you're looking for words AND enthusiasm, there is no better place than Tumblr. Like, I'm in the last stretch of getting an MA in creative writing for young people, and all the most interesting storytelling content is here.
I dunno. I've been thinking lots about lots of things lately (this being the bizarre and horrible era that it is). What I keep landing on is that here and Bluesky are the only places that reflect the kind of Internet that I actually want to use. So I want to make space to use them.
Things I might do, on my new-old blog: • repost anything remotely interesting, exactly as I once did • rant • talk about books • talk about writing • write fanfiction? It's been years since I did any of that. Could be a good stress-relief exercise from the Dreaded Novel Dissertation. • delve into fan culture and get real nerdy with it • nothing at all
We'll see what happens.
