"everything Marinette's do to Adrien (hiding things, break amok, etc) doesn't make her a bad girlfriend, that just make her human" is the kind of post that make me wondering if the person who post this really believe what they say or... Just simply the victim of echo chamber to put it lightly because it's just funny that it sounds illogical for me. Does that mean being a bad girlfriend make you inhuman or what?
Yeah, like, I thought it was a good thing Miraculous coddles the abusers in the cast because âit shows they're humanâ. Bad girlfriends are, in fact, humans too. But that's just it, Miraculous doesn't just humanize abusers, it sympathises with them more than their victims, and Marinette's brand of being a bad girlfriend puts her right next to Gabriel among the abusers. The reason the âit just makes her humanâ defense of Marinette sounds like it's just echoing someone else's words is because it is. This show has trained the fandom to accept increasing forms of abuse without seeing it as too bad and it has trained the fandom to always prioritize Marinette's emotions in every situation. That's why Marinette being a downright abusive girlfriend doesn't make her Bad (â˘), it just means she's stressed out and traumatized. It means she is actually the one who needs sympathy and help, not her victim.
It's another way this show's all or nothing writing and morality screws over any attempt at tackling serious topics. In the morality of Miraculous, you're either fundamentally Good or fundamentally Bad, which means that only characters who are Bad can be admitted to have done something morally wrong by the narrative. Anyone weâre meant to sympathize with has to be a Good Person Who Just Made A Mistake, no matter how often they make that same mistake or how that mistake fits into a pattern of behavior that shows this character has some problematic ideas about other people's agency, so they are always depicted as a tragic victim of circumstances or their own actions while their actual victims rarely hold a grudge and, it they do, that grudge is also something used to direct audience sympathy towards the Good Person Who Just Made A Mistake.
Like, this show is being written by French Christians, and it shows in this idea that being a Bad Person is something wrong with you and the only way you can atone is by being punished for your sins, so any character nobly suffering is a Good Person, no matter how much that punishment is a self-caused misery or outright self-flagellation. This is why ChloĂŠ being stuck with her abusive mom was Good and Just while Marinette constantly crying about her self-caused problems means we should want her to get off scot free because she's already been punished enough. It sounds really Catholic is what I'm saying.
Unless this hard veer into seemingly Christian fundamentalism isn't actually that but just another extension of Astruc's ChloĂŠ agenda, where ChloĂŠ and anyone like her has to be Pure Evil who deserve to burn in the pits of Hell, and this is the only opinion anyone is allowed to have on the subject, while everyone else gets to be a multifaceted character and human being, which means their lack of maliciousness is more important than the harm they cause.
Actually, this feels like another moral tenet that leans heavily into the kind of discourse Astruc has been stuck in. Weâve recently been talking about Miraculousâ history of racism, where nonwhite characters are often reduced into ethnic stereotypes and âexoticâ aesthetics, especially in terms of Akuma forms. It's the lack of maliciousness in these depictions that's always had Astruc so outraged and offended whenever someone points out they're stereotypical and therefore racist. Of course a man who defends himself with the idea that his intentions are more important than how the show comes across would try to teach that intentions triumph over results when writing a âlesson of the dayâ show for kids.
Is Astruc airing out his grievances with negative feedback with this show's morality or is he just Very French and Very Catholic about it? Honestly, I think it's probably both because, while Miraculous always had this approach to its protagonistâs mistakes, it wasn't quite this preachy about it until after Astruc started having characters quote his tweets about ChloĂŠ.
