Concept art for two very old characters of mine (their earliest refs are from 2013!) that I've been working on on the side. I don't plan to do too much with them at the moment, as I have other projects, but maybe someday I will. Mostly I've just been doodling them for fun!

I RAMBLE ABOUT IT MORE BELOW THE CUT!
Zira's lore is virtually unchanged, but Vivian has undergone a major overhaul. I have an old short story document, wherein I went over his initial meeting with Zira, and it had him established as living in an abandoned mad scientist laborary in a bunker underground, and teaming up with Zira. However in that version (and remember, this is very old! I wrote the story I am referencing waaaaaay the fuck back as a teenager, at age maybe 15 or 16 if that; which would have placed the story being written between 2014 and 2016), Vivian had a whole other angle to his backstory that I may or may not scrap or completely redo, in which he was a rogue mega BEFORE THOSE WERE AN OFFICIAL CANNON THING!
In that old version, Vivian had a time period wherein he had been forced into a permanent mega evolution for about a year, and either the people at the underground now dilapidated laboratory helped him, or Zira and her coworkers did. Either way, afterwards, he elected to be part of an experiment in cybernetics that resulted in him getting his robotic arm - to fill the gap left behind by the overwhelming mega evolution power he couldn't stop involuntarily craving (I do nooooot pretend to know how to ACTUALLY deal with such a thing, I am not a doctor of any kind and I deeeeefinitely was not and did not as a teenager! it was the just the story that I wrote at that time).
ALSO in that old version, Vivian's lab was a decommissioned branch of ZIRA'S lab's parent company. This branch was originally tasked with studying and containing anomalies a lot like SCP - but went rogue and started CREATING them instead, causing them to be disbanded. Vivian then moved in AFTER this fact, only learning of the true nature of the things behind the doors he'd boarded up when Zira came to investigate and explained it to him.
In that version however Vivian was a distinctly wild pokemon, even if he did tend to get himself involved in human shenanigans from time to time.
In the new idea, I'm placing Vivian's involvement with the labs way earlier in his life, and also making the labs their own separate thing independent of Zira's labs (though she is still sent to investigate, just for different reasons). I haven't exactly decided how I want this involvement to start, but I'm on the fence between either having Vivian have been RAISED by the Secret Labs, or to maybe rework the rogue mega backstory from the old version (possibly having it be that team Plasma experimented on him, got in way over their heads, and then tipped off the Secret Labs to him so THEY could go profit from that horrible mistake instead).
I do know that Vivian functioned as the Secret Labs living security system, using his Bad Dreams ability and constant patrolling to deter people from entering the area, and detaining them with Dark Void if they got in. And Vivian also defended the lab boys from hazardous anomalies.
For the Secret Labs themselves, they are kind of like if SCP was ran by Aperture Science; they are made up of mostly rejects and holdovers from various evil teams (notably team Plasma, as all of this takes place in Unova, or closeby), and they deal in the containment and study of supernatural anomalies. And they are named like that (with their staff even being called 'lab boys'/'lab girls'/'lab enbies'!) both because I'm bad at at naming things, and because I think it's something they'd genuinely do - and that that such a comically obvious name would be a good cover in-universe!
The Secret Labs had a clearance system a lot like SCP, going from 1 (guests who are merely given permission to exist at the labs At All), to 4 (the top command who decide all the rules and are the only ones to have access to all anomalies in the facility), and they classified anomalies with a similar system, from Safe, to 'Godey' (equivalent to the moderately dangerous 'Euclid' classification from SCP, and sharing a similar naming by referencing an in-universe architect where SCP references a real-life mathematician), to 'Distortion' (highly dangerous anomalies, with the name referencing the Distortion World of pokemon lore).
The labs were abandoned, however, following the escape of a Distortion-class anomaly, and the enactment of their second highest level emergency protocol (the highest is to simply blow the entire facility up, staff inside or not, in the hopes of annihilating the threat). The entire lab was evacuated, all anomalies either taken out or destroyed, the lower level sealed with the anomaly inside... and Vivian left behind to continue guarding the place. It's some time after this that Zira goes to investigate the labs, and meets Vivian there.
The robotic arm btw, in this version, would be a genuine prosthetic following an SCP-level workplace accident, just... made by the type of people who'd do great working at Aperture Science.
If I DO do the 'Vivian was raised by the lab boys' variant, that one I know I will have to handle with immense tact, as it carries with it some Fucking Heavy themes - and if there is one thing I have learned as a writer, to improve any work of writing, it is to know what, and when, to handle with immense tact.

Here's some notes and concept art for the early part of I Can Fix Him! when Darkrai stranded in Miracle Sea!
He spends several months there surviving like a castaway, except he has no boat (only some rocks that jut out of the sea!), can't make fire because it is monsoon season in the ocean, and his only sources of food are seaweed, and berries, seeds, and apples he's able to loot from the local mystery dungeon... for which he has no explorer bag to carry large amounts of supplies with, NOR an explorer badge to get himself out of the dungeon through any means other than running himself into the ground fighting until something finally KO's him. I DID run some experiments, with my freshly recruited Darkrai with his default moveset, sending him into Miracle Sea with no items, or only the items he has after the last failure, to see how far he could get and how brutal it'd be. The answer was pretty brutal! The pokemon there are close to his level, and even though Darkrai can clip through walls, doing so rapidly drains his hunger, and so is ill-advised except in emergencies. And relying only on dungeon loot, and acting as if I have no treasure bag, means he has very little items to work with! Starvation was actually a major killer in my experiments, since if I didn't find enough food items, Darkrai would starve before depleting all his moves :0
ALSO yes he eats the poison too, it's a whole bit actually that I want to put as a small detail in the fic, that both Darkrai AND Ink tend to eat the poison items like oren berries if they're hungry but not enough to warrant an apple, because it's only like 10 hp, who cares? They'll just walk it off! Which is uh Much To The Horror of more normal people like Sylvia, haha!
Sorry the image is so small! Tumblr seems to have developed a sudden allergy to images over 1, or maybe 1.5 mb in size... which is most of my images, even after shrinking! (I draw on a monstrous 150 x 100 cm canvas)
Anyway here's some more of my notes!
The 'Stage 1' and 'Stage 2' KO idea in the bottom right is an idea I have to explain pokemon battling KO states, and reconcile that with that thing you see happening in PMD cutscenes where a defeated opponents is incapacitated, and can talk and weakly move, but not fight back anymore. The fact that a pokemon can still weakly move in a stage 1 KO state, is why exploration teams are able to get of mystery dungeons without permanent injury even if the whole team is KO'd - they are still able to move just enough to use the explorer badge on themselves or each other!
PMD2 Darkrai in the story I'm working on, has been in this state, including stage 2, many times, and is unusually mobile at a stage 1 KO. Repeated torment has driven his pain tolerance quite high, as it has his motivation to get up and power through it even it means hurting himself to do so. That's how he's able to get up and summon the dimensional hole in Dark Crater, despite him otherwise being at a stage 1 KO state!

ALSO I am seriously considering giving Cresselia Lati-twins arms... she already looks like she has them, just tucked flush to her body and not yet seen unfolded. AND the both of them have a similar body shape and size, being perpetually volant pokemon with feathery integument, seemingly no feet, and a long neck! AND psychic type!
I still have not figured out how to make sense of Cresselia's feathers though... the lunar wings/feathers that COME FROM HER are notably GREEN despite Cresselia herself being yellow, blue, and pink, and NOT green... AND the feathers are curved, despite Cresselia having a smooth look to her suggesting feathers that lay flat with the contours of her body. I'm thinking maybe they are like down underneath the layers of contour feathers that give her colors??? ...EXCEPT for the fact that the lunar wing feathers have this shape to them a lot more like contour or flight feathers than down feathers... OR maybe the feathers change color and curl up when removed from her body?

B. Bruised my tooth! Don't carry a metal pocket knife with a dangling metal key in your teeth, and then swing your head to look at something! You will swing the key into your teeth and even if it doesn't crack, the application of forces to one side will make the other side, THE ROOT, go the OTHER way and bruise the socket! Agonizing pain for three days and then it got infected because of course it did.

C. Extracted the OTHER tooth because BOTH central incisors were wrongly root canaled as a teenager and NOT FINISHED because the quack ass dentist didn't get insurance approval before doing the procedure ON TEETH THAT DID NOT NEED IT (its a long story) 10 YEARS AGO because I was dumb ass teenager that went with whatever the dentist said was best (such as a 'preventative' root canal on otherwise healthy teeth). had a bone graft placed in the same visit - it was a surgical extraction btw, since this tooth had no tooth above the gumline - they had to drill a trough around the tooth in the bone to be able to grip it and pull it out. It was an interesting experience I'll tell you, to smell my own bone being drilled into and to smell the bone and blood being sprayed into my nose occasionally (not a bad smell actually! smelled kinda edible actually. little like doritos. sorry to ruin doritos for you...) Worst part of that actually was the aftermath (and I do not do general anesthesia, only local, cuz not being constantly fully aware of everything at all times is scarier to me than any amount of pain, blood, or smell of my bones being drilled into!), notably the anxiety over 'oh boy oh fuck what if I fuck it up and my graft fails' - and you really do gotta be careful with it for a long time, to not disturb or literally suck out the graft material (it is a particulate held in with a membrane and sutures, all dissolvable). I'm STILL not able to bite things (it is my front tooth, tooth 8 actually) or to eat anything that crunches into shards, as they could get into my hole which now has Exposed Bone as the membrane has long since dissolved into Slime. I'll only be able to do that after my gums close up around the hole, and that'll still be some time from now. Later I will trace over and post my dental X-rays, as I think they are very interesting! I am a very Interesting dental patient, haha

More engineering and furgonomics type concept art for I Can Fix Him!
Mostly, this one is focused on the setting of Treasure Town, and Team Starbeam's base at Sharpedo Bluff.
The climate there is in the subtropical zone btw! Treasure Town is kind of in the middle of the continent so I see it being fairly warm but not super extremely so. Sometimes it gets a little bit cold, but it doesn't tend to snow, and during the summers it gets pretty hot and they have monsoon kinda weather often.
ALSO I got the idea for spira bread from Jay Eaton's RttS! The spira bread here is a little different, being made with more seaweed/algae than RttS's spira bread, but that's where I got the base idea from! (speaking of, if you like these kind of world building engineering ergonomics speculative biology kind of topics, I highly recommend reading said comic! it's a wonderful read and currently on-going! Here's a link to the comic proper!)
Also if you've never heard of an archimedes' screw/screw pump, it's one of these! They are a kind of pump that can be made with entirely mechanical components, and thus well within the sort of medieval ish setting of PMD!
Do note Ink's is not 100% accurate for her as a Ninetales (I moved the explorer badge onto the treasure bag) or her moveset (in my actual playthrough I did recently to recreate my lost save file, I ended up swapping my classic Wide Slash for Dark Pulse to take advantage of her higher special attack more (and also because I didn't realize it was AOE until recently!)
Here's some fun facts about their origins as characters:
Ink is initially going to a still a Vulpix while Sylvia is already a Delcatty because I actually had those specific pokemon as figures once! A family friend had a bunch of old pokemon figures they let me have, and while they didn't have Ninetales or Skitty, they DID have Vulpix and Delcatty!
The other reason she takes forever to evolve is because on my one save file as a kid, I could NOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME FIND A FIRE STONE. I was playing without the wiki at the time so I had no idea that evolution items are restricted to spawning in specific dungeons (go to Mystifying Forest and Midnight Forest if you need them!), so I was just looking all over and having no luck. I literally got to level 96 with her and SHE WAS STILL NOT EVOLVED
They are both loosely based off a save file I had as a kid, wherein I got Vulpix naturally thru the personality quiz (multiple times, too, since I remember having another save where my partner was actually Eevee! btw don't pick Eevee as your partner unless you want a challenge. Runaway makes them panic and run off if their health gets low, creating an awful scramble to get them back before they get themselves into trouble), and then I had my bestie at the time either play thru the quiz herself to be given a pokemon, or choose one manually, and that would be my partner! Either way, that pokemon was Skitty!
Sylvia's personality only loosely pulls from what my friend was like, though, since I want her as a character to be more like the in-game partner character, both in terms of canon dialogue and my actual gameplay. Plus I don't want to straight up recreate a real person! She is more meant to represent the kind of friendship we had itself.
Ink is meant to be sort of like if a snapshot of myself as teen was actually isekai'd into this other world, with the power to do shit like breathe fire and have a job and not live with an abusive asshole stepfather. Despite being younger than I am now (Ink is about 19 at the start of the story; I am currently 26), Ink is meant to be what I think I might be like if I'd been pulled from the situation that still torments me waaaaay earlier.

WIP concept art for tool ergonomics for I Can Fix Him!
I think the thing that brings me closest to connection with humanity is ergonomics. the designing of human made things made to be used by humans, to better interface with the human body and mind. and relatedly I consider it very humanizing (personalizing?) to do this for other beings, because non human sophonts would do this too.
So this will be a major world building angle for I Can Fix Him!; the inclusion of infrastructure and tool design and the designing of tools to be usable by the immense diversity of body shapes and plans and manipulators which pokemon have.

I'd also like to link a page from another of my favorite webcomics, The Book Written By Tiny Paws, wherein one of a band of neolithic sophont rats ponders a hypothetical solution to a problem which they could not solve. That problem was the greivious injury suffered by one of their companions, that resulted in them having to amputate the affected limb due to the unstaunchability of the bleeding. And they wondered, if only they could make needle and thread small enough to sew blood vessels shut. To them, with the technology they had available, that seemed impossible.
But it is not impossible. It is a question which neolithic humans likely asked, observing that blood moved in tiny tubes in the body... what if they could be reconnected? to stop bleeding and keep injured limbs still on without that limb dying and then poisoning the rest of the body as it rotted.
But we have figured out how to do that! That question likely asked in hopeless wishful thinking countless times millennia ago and centuries ago... We have answered it. Through the striving of countless humans one on top of the other like geologic strata, combining all their knowledge like bricks in a house, we have figured it out. We can make the needle and thread small enough to sew blood vessels closed.

Idea for how Darkrai manages to open dimensional holes for my fic
So how did Darkrai get to the Hidden Land, to fuck up Temporal Tower? The only ways in are to have the Relic Fragment choose you and then go Brine Cave and then ride the ferryman Lapras (who is a person! he could judge you unworthy at any moment!) across the sea of time, or to have Dialga himself bless you with the ability to open Dimensional Holes (this is how Dusknoir gets in, Primal Dialga opens the Dimensional Hole for him or possibly grants him the ability outright). and there is no way in hell Darkrai was getting either of those, so how did he get in, and how did he open that Dimensional Hole in Dark Crater?

I have so many things planned out in my head but its so hard to put them down for others to see, because I do everything in sets of three and then sets of nine and then sets of twenty seven because it itches it all itches its not even part of my body and it itches. something bad will happen if I dont do it (it will not. but the feeling is so hard to deny). its torturous it makes me light headed but I just have to power thru it. This is my fic that I've been making concept art for and which will be my primary focus in terms of major projects going forward for the time being. I will update this when I write and post the first chapter; I plan to do so on AO3 and possibly also here, so look out for a link!
The fic will be about attempting to redeem Darkrai from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky, but also about uncovering and healing the trauma that made him into the villain he was in the game.

I decided on PMD2 Darkrai's injury BEFORE I decided on this for certain; all I knew was the majority of the body mass and guts were in the thorax, and that some of this def extended into the back
Dunno if any of you have ever used a CAD software (3D modeling software used for making machine parts and other industrial things), but that's what I think Palkia's powers are a little like.
here's what I mean by 'extrude' set to operation 'cut':
(you have no idea how much of a pain in the ass the Darkrai model was. only Pokepark's was available in a filetype that I could import into FreeCAD and then export into ANOTHER filetype that Fusion360 would understand and then I had to muck about a bunch to convert it into a solid so that it could be cut)

WARNING for mild gore below!
When Palkia attacked Darkrai in Dark Crater, he basically tried to delete him by extrude cutting his matter into oblivion. Darkrai narrowly managed to outspeed it, but still got clipped by the edge. And the damage was devastating; the backs of 3 ribs and portions of several organs (notably, Darkrai's lungs) were cut out of him. Very thankfully for Darkrai this missed his spine, however.
Probably the surface of the wound was cauterized at the moment of impact by the energy of the attack, thereby ensuring he did not immediately bleed out.
To stave off infection he probably just prioritized eating heal seeds and pecha berries at every opportunity, since those all seem to have potent anti poison (infection in part kills you because the bacteria make nasty toxins) properties (tho do note pokemon seem wildly more resistant to poisoning than real animals such as humans! please take IRL infection or poisoning MUCH more seriously!)
