My favorite RPG cover of all time has to be this Fred Fields one from 1989.Ā
Dungeon Master Essentials
I decided to make a list of DM stuff that I personally use or think are important to know when it comes to being a DM. So hereās my list:
Medieval Fantasy City Generator: This generator is now my LIFE. It generates incredibly complex cities with good customization. (Thanks to plantkat for sharing this site in their post here)
Naming Your Towns/Cities:Ā Now that youāve made your city, time to name it and give it some character! This post contains lots of great information.
Index Cards Rule: Fuckyeahdnd shared a SUPER convenient way of keeping track of turns and HP in combat. I use this system now for every single session I run.
Tricks & Traps:Ā I am AWFUL at coming up with good Dungeon traps and challenges, this PDF includes some incredible ideas. The original poster,Ā Courtney C. Campbell also runs a blog where she shares tons of great stuff.Ā (Thanks to we-are-rogue for sharing the PDF in their post here)
Playing Different Types of Characters:Ā WriteinspirationĀ has a masterpost on how to write/play lots of different types of characters.
Unique NPC Jobs:Ā LauraharrisbooksĀ wrote a list of different Fantasy Jobs which can help populate your world with some unique characters! Another similar post by Thewritershandbook also covers Common Occupations in the Middle Ages.Ā
Developing Characters by Threes:Ā Monticusrexās method of creating characters help you really flesh out who they are. Useful for Players and DMās.
Troublesome Players? Speak Up:Ā DiceboundĀ brings up an incredibly great point. If someone is being a jerk, speak up and call them out. This is especially important and relevant now to crush awful behavior before it even has a chance to show itās ugly face.
List of D&D Resources: And finally, pretty much anything you might need for D&D.Ā (Character stuff, spells, online communities/ways to play, etc..) A lot of people contributed to this post but thank you MushroomancyĀ for posting the original list.
Donjon: And finally, this site is a great resource for looking up Spells and Monsters along with tons of other generators. Not every single Spell or Monster is on here, but most are listed.
(I tried to give credit to the original posters or the actual URL for websites, unless those sites or URLs were no longer active)
Iām screaming.
Iām glad that my index card thing has been of use to someone :)

Players having the ability to buy magic items isnāt actually a problem. Itās the means by which the purchase of magic items is implemented that can be a problem. Functionally unlimited ā¦
An example magic items shop that avoids the usual pitfalls. Plus like, over a hundred weird and wonderful items only some of which are scams.
How did this poor fighter wind up in a party with three thieves?Ā Heās lucky one of them took the time to help him.
David Sutherland, from B1: In Search of the Unknown, TSR, 1979.Ā This is the only illustration in the first edition of B1 that has nothing to do with the module.Ā Iām glad I had the sense not to add mummies to B1 the first time I ran it for 1st level characters.
What if there were a 3rd level of forgotten ancient catacombs beneath the barracks and cave levels of Quasqueton? Roghan and Zelligar were rumored to have disappeared into the North, but what if they were lost in the unknown lower levels of their own dungeon ā¦
Fantasy Settings: This nation state is named after its founder or a magical artifact or a virtue held dear by its people
Real World: Land-Land, People-Land, Country, People-Countryā¦
House Hunters: D&D Edition.Ā
Alright, on a more serious note, I was inspired by a recent ask to redo my original building generator that I made a while back (and add a lot more tables and detail to it). Itās by no means an end-all-be-all set of rolling tables, just an outline to get things started and developed. Have fun looking for a home base for your adventurers!
The artwork used is stock by Fumar-Porros. They create all of it using SketchUp and Photoshop. Itās really impressive!
Buy Me a Coffee?
Ultimatum: A Game of Nuclear ConfrontationĀ (ad inĀ Dragon magazine 38, June 1980; for Yaquintoās 1979 game of Cold War conflict)Ā As both sides amass larger arsenals, the pressure to use them increases with each turn.

A quick rolling table for clothing, based on clothing from the medieval and renaissance period. Yes, there is the possibility of wearing no shirt and two vests on the first page. Yes that was somewhat intentional. I think Iām funny at 2 am.
Not a game
Some example maps for folks to see
theres several other palettes and style options, options for adding and removing elements, and a separate site hosting this generator as well, where you can edit the size and seed in the address bar
Amazingly accurate tweet.
āIn the depths of every heart, there is a tomb and a dungeon, though the lights, the music, and revelry above may cause us to forget their existence, and the buried ones, or prisoners whom they hide. But sometimes, and oftenest at midnight, those dark receptacles are flung wide open.ā
āNathaniel Hawthorne,Ā āThe Haunted Mindā, 1835

(Useless/Surprising) Magical Items
So I was having a lovely conversation with @princeofsparrows about magic and magical items and he sent me several links to very useful lists and tables. Those can be used by any DM to improve the game and set some more fun/challenge into the game without adding enemies or limiting themselves to always better armors and weapons.
My players usually discuss for an hour about the best way to open every door with a single rune on it (even if the rune actually just means ātoiletsā). So if I give them an omniously glowing fork and they will turn around it for half of the eveningā¦
We decided to share with you some links with awesome ideas for loot (or your NPC merchants). The links below include (but are not limited to):
Belt of Pants: This belt creates illusory pants on the wearer. The wearer can suppress the illusion at will.
Digging Spoon: This tiny spoon can dig through any substance with a forceful push.
Hungry coin: Ā Cursed. Ā Will attempt to eat other coins that it comes into contact with. Ā Eats 100 coins an hour.
Crossbow of Whispers (Weapon, light crossbow): You can use an action to whisper a message and fire a bolt from this weapon at a target within range. If you hit, the target (and only the target) hears the message.
Scroll of Cure Blindness: Cures blindness when read.
So⦠The List⢠:
Dakhem Uaidās Big Book of Useless Magic ItemsĀ - 200 items, some very useful some dangerousā¦
Alacrityās Robe of Useful Items - 1 single item but itās a robe of holding (kinda)
Goblin Punch: d100 Minor Magical Items - as stated in the title.
100 Interesting Magic Items: The first half - 50 items
donjon, 5e Random Generator - Weird Magic Item generator
(1) Reddit -Ā 3.5 Or anything. DMs of Reddit! What is one of the weirdest homebrewed items youāve given your players, that they appreciated?
(2) Reddit -Ā Hilariously Useless Magical Items - Post your ideas!
RPG.NET -Ā 101 Silly/Useless Magic ItemsĀ - You need to read through 7 pages of the thread but there are some very nice ideas!
1001 most useless (dungeons and dragons) magical items - There are actually 21 of them on this list but they are really useless. It could be nice to drop something like that on the players so they can have some funā¦
Now I will let @princeofsparrows to continue. He still has some things to add :)
The great thing about a lot of these items is that, despite their apparent uselessness, as with most things in D&D, an innovative player can find some use for it⦠and I feel it throws a bit of a wrench into the mix. Here are some other honorable mentions:
Rebloging for the screenshots.
Awesome
