Tips for Writing Injuries
✧ Broken ribs suck. You don’t just “walk it off.” Breathing hurts. Laughing hurts. Existing hurts. Characters with rib injuries won’t be doing heroic sprints.
✧ Concussions aren’t instant naps. Dazed vision, nausea, dizziness, maybe even personality changes, but they’re not going to collapse neatly like in the movies.
✧ Blood loss is sneaky. It’s not just about dramatic pools of blood. It’s dizziness, confusion, and the body getting cold as circulation tanks.
✧ Adrenaline lies. Someone can take a serious injury and not feel it until the fight’s over. That “I didn’t realize I was bleeding until later” trope? Very real.
✧ Twisted ankles are brutal. One bad step and suddenly running is off the table. Even walking hurts like hell. Perfect way to ground a chase scene.
✧ Burns linger. Even small burns hurt more than most people expect. Blisters, infection risk, constant pain, it’s not just a cool scar later.
✧ Dislocated shoulders = useless arm. Characters can’t keep swinging a sword or firing a gun. They’re basically fighting one-armed until it’s fixed.
✧ Shock is a thing. Pale skin, trembling, rapid heartbeat, and eventually disorientation. A character might not even realize how bad their wound is.
✧ Stitches aren’t magic. Getting sewn up is painful and recovery takes time. They’re not instantly battle-ready after a needle and thread.
✧ Scars tell stories. Some fade, some don’t. Some stay sensitive forever. Don’t forget the aftermath when the wound becomes part of the character.
he's beautiful i literally need to put him under extreme psychological stress. i need to put him in extreme physical pain. i need him curling up in someone's arms for the feelings of safety and comfort he hasn't received in ages
Responses to “why didn’t you tell me?”
✧ "because I didn’t think you’d care."
✧ "because I barely admitted it to myself."
✧ "i was gonna... and then the moment passed... like three weeks ago."
✧ "because every time i almost did, i panicked and made a stupid joke instead."
✧ "it didn’t feel like something you’d want to know."
✧ "because i’m a professional at bottling things up until they explode spectacularly."
✧ "i figured if i kept quiet, it wouldn’t be real."
✧ "i was scared you’d look at me differently. and now you are."
✧ "because it was easier to lie than to see that look on your face."
✧ "i didn’t want to need you. still don’t."
✧ "because i didn’t want to ruin whatever this is."
✧ "because i’m tired of being the problem."
✧ "you were already dealing with so much. i didn’t want to be more weight."
✧ "i didn’t think i deserved to be honest with you."
✧ "because if i said it out loud, you might leave."
✧ "because i wanted to be someone you didn’t have to worry about."
✧ "because it’s not just about me. it never is."
✧ "you ever hold something in so long it becomes part of you? yeah. that."
✧ "because i didn’t know how to say it without falling apart."
hello hello. what are your favorite verbs to describe the speech of someone who's dazed with fever / a concussion / heatstroke etc. I can only have them mumble/mutter/ slur their words so many times
She said hazily
He said, eyes struggling to focus on (character)
They paused mid-sentence, lips open, struggling for words
She said in a stumbling whisper
He repeated himself, apparently unaware he had done so
They said, eyelids stuttering
She said through loose lips
He said as if through a growing fog
They said with a kind of strange disinterest, as though struggling to retain their grip on the here and now
Trailed/trailing off
"The words were just out of reach"
"Their mouth was open but their mind was blank"
Jumbled (confused thoughts or quality of speech)
Stammer/stutter (can sometimes happen after a concussion)
"(As if) She forgot what she was saying"
"He was struggling to get the words out"
"They lost track of the conversation"
"They tried to refocus, realizing they lost their train of thought once again."
Hazy/foggy/distant or dazed for generally confused and wandering speech
Halting (frequently pausing speech)
Wearily (for sick characters who sound tired or unclear from exhaustion or fatigue)

being sick & miserable objectively sucks, but it has become significantly easier to cope with since learning that “sickness behavior” is a well documented part of the body’s immune response
feeling not only physically but also emotionally like fucking garbage is unfortunately an extremely effective way to force your body to prioritize fighting infection & keeping you alive. i don’t have to like it, but knowing why i get weepy & pathetic when sick does help at least a little
i just found out that this is not common knowledge and am reblogging so more people know
YOUR BODY DOES THIS ON PURPOSE
YOU ARE NOT A BAD PERSON BECAUSE OR "WEAK" WHEN YOU ARE SICK IF YOU CAN"T CARRY ON AS NORMAL
As someone who has had an 104 (40 for my celsuis folks) fever: I just thought it would be fun to document some things I experienced but never see in fever prompts (also this is all personal experience so I assume it's 'medically accurate' because it literally happened to me but idk do what you want)
-My energy levels were like being on a roller coaster; I would be half dead for an hour or two, laying under layers of blankets and would then have five minutes of energy pumping through my veins. I stayed home from school that day and I remember feeling awful in the morning, I took a nap, and then was up and normal for a few hours. I showered, I worked on school, I scrolled on here, I listened to music. And then it plummeted real fast: I remember trying to focus on an assignment and then getting a massive headache and feeling light-headed so I laid down and covered myself in blankets and I was half-dead for basically the rest of the day
And I think that should be used more often in whump. Imagine Caretaker checking in on Whumpee: who was dead asleep, cold yet sweating, and melting into the bed; only to see them up and about 30 minutes later getting food or a glass of water like they didn't just look like a person on their death bed: then Caretaker's like 'dude what the, get back to bed you idiot, you're sick' and Whumpees just like '???? I feel fine?' and then 30 minutes later Whumpee is back where they started, stuck in a vicious cycle
-I know we've all seen the 'such high fever that they're deliriously emotional' but sweetheart I don't even think I was that delirious and that was probably one of my most emotional days of my life; I would get mad, then angry, then I would want to cry, and then I would just go back to neutral: I think I remember being on the verge of tears because of my covers not cooperating
-I WAS SO COLD. I WAS FREEZING MY BUTT OFF. I always see fevers that make Whumpee feel hot but that was NOT me, I remember literally shivering even though I had MULTIPLE layers on and I low-key don't know why because I also assumed that it would feel hot while being on the verge of being baked alive in your own body but that's just me
And that's all pookies
(If anyone is a medical professional or smth and has the science behind any of my symptoms, please reblog/comment/message me privately about it because I am genuinely curious)
Sharing a bit of my own fever symptoms, too, if that's okay!
(Fevers between 100,4°F and 104,9°F)
Usually, my fevers make me feel very, very cold, but I don't let myself get a lot of covers because the cold is a consequence of how hot my body temperature is. So if I use a lot of covers, I will only get my body even warmer, which will worsen the fever. I usually use cold towels on the forehead or neck. (At least, I've been teached those things all my life, don't take my words as professional advice, I'm just sharing my own experience)
I personally never had a boost of energy. Fever always leaves me extremely tired, without appetite, with a headache (especially the temples and behind the eyes), shivering, weak, and usually nauseated. I usually depend on someone else to help me do most daily stuff, even a little.
My emotional state truly goes a bit wild during fevers. I feel the need to cry easily, but I don't think anger is a feeling I usually have during fevers (perhaps because I don't feel it often even when I'm healthy). I get clingy, perhaps because of a natural human instinct to need someone else during a vulnerable state. Besides that, I get very bored (because I don't have the energy or strength to do much) and frustrated with how uncomfortable the symptoms are.
(This is the 104,9°F fever). As far as I can remember, I've only ever had an actual delirious episode once during a fever (if it happened more times, I was too sick or too young to remember them).
- It started at night, when I was asleep. My fever went higher, and my nausea got worse, so I woke up and tried to make myself more comfortable, but my coordination was terrible, the room seemed all wrong (too wide, then too small), the lights seemed dimmer than I remembered, and I couldn't think well.
- I remember that night seemed to last days, because I checked my phone, and everytime, it had absurd numbers that went higher than 24 hours, or that made no sense comparing to the last number I checked (like going back a few hours or show that it was day, when it wasn't).
- I also remember being so out of it that I talked to myself, thinking someone was with me (I didn't see anyone) for some reason, and I didn't even think of calling for someone in the house.
- Other memories were lost on me because of how sick I was, but I remember being so, so distressed and confused that I cried during it, because I knew something was wrong, and the delirium symptoms just kept coming in waves and not letting me sleep. It was one of the most scary feelings I've ever had in my life, because it felt like being trapped in a weird time loop of nausea, weakness, hallucinations and confusion, without being able to even sit on the bed or call for someone.
- (I'm pretty sure I had a lot of fever dreams because I kept waking up and going back to sleep with how sick and tired I was, but the thing is... I couldn't tell when I was awake and when I was asleep. The delirium made it all seem like one thing, so these symptoms I've described could be real life or fever dreams, but it felt like all real to me, and I remember them clearly as a memory. So you can make a feverish whumpee think something happened, and caretaker being like, "ahm, I was here the whole time, whumpee, that didn't happen")
So yeah, those are the things I remembered about my own fevers. I just thought it would be okay to share them, too. Fevers can be a bit different for each person, especially depending on WHY you're having a fever (an injury infection, a virus infection and what type, heat stroke, medications, etc), so the most experiences you read, the better you can write a feverish whumpee :)
Hope this helps someone!
Ways I Show a Character is Emotionally Burned Out (Before They Even Realize It Themselves)
I love writing characters who think they’re fine but are actually walking emotional house fires with bad coping mechanisms.
They stop doing the things they used to love and don’t even notice. Their guitar gathers dust. Their favorite podcast becomes background noise. Their hobbies feel like homework now.
They pick the path of least resistance every time, even when it hurts them. No, they don’t want to go to that thing. No, they don’t want to talk to that person. But whatever’s easier. That’s the motto now.
They’re tired but can’t sleep. Or they sleep but wake up more tired. Classic burnout move: lying in bed with their brain racing like a toddler on espresso.
They give other people emotional advice they refuse to take themselves. “You have to set boundaries!” they say—while ignoring 8 texts from someone they should’ve cut off three emotional breakdowns ago.
They cry at something stupidly small. Like spilling soup. Or a dog in a commercial. Or losing their pen. The soup is never just soup.
They say “I’m just tired” like it’s a personality trait now. And not like… emotionally drained to the bone but afraid to admit it out loud.
They ghost people they love, not out of malice, but because even replying feels like too much. Social battery? Absolutely obliterated. Texting back feels like filing taxes.
They stop reacting to big things. Catastrophes get a blank stare. Disasters feel like “just another Tuesday.” The well of feeling is running dry.
They avoid being alone with their own thoughts. Constant noise. TV always on. Music blasting. Because silence = reckoning, and reckoning is terrifying.
They start hoping something will force them to stop. An accident. A missed deadline. Someone else finally telling them, “You need a break.” Because asking for help? Unthinkable.
Hi there! I’ve had this idea but I don’t know how to write it; I was wondering if you could give me some tips. So A (whumpee) gets a concussion somehow and idk how to write symptoms progressing and appearing and stuff. I’m hoping to start mild to more “extreme” (double vision-> passing out, and stuff like that). Thanks for the help! -Felix
okay so, depending on the grade of the concussion, your whumpee can experience a range of symptoms, from pretty minimal manifestations, all the way to severe symptoms (exactly where we want our whumpees right?) which can then progress into dangerous territory
any symptoms that last less than 15 minutes are a grade one, less than 24 hours is a grade two, and those that last longer than 24 hours are classed as a grade three.
grade one: mild concussions usually involve irritability, headaches, lack of balance and usually some nausea as well. you can have some memory loss, but its not significant, and definitely does not last long at all, ~15-30 minutes at most. they might have some trouble focusing at first, but this can be quickly regained within a day or so.
grade two: a moderate concussion, is very similar to grade one, however the symptoms are longer lasting, for example memory loss can occur and last for up to 24 hours sometimes. its also important to note that they have the same symptoms as the grade one, however as well as being longer lasting they are also stronger, and cause more pain and discomfort — this means that the nausea, dizziness and even blurred vision can be more debilitating, and when added to an already irritable whumpee who cant focus, whump galore
grade three: so severe concussions are the most serious, and they’re characterised by the addition of loss of consciousness in your whumpee for more than 5 minutes. symptoms include memory loss, inability to concentrate, blurry vision for extended periods of time, constant headaches, vomiting, light sensitive as well as any above symptoms.Â
so to answer your question, first determine what kind of concussion you want them to have, whether they passed out or not, and whether they are getting worse — if your whumpee has a grade three concussion, but also starts to lose consciousness again, or uneven pupils, vomiting more than twice, high fevers, seizures, slurred speech or extremely peculiar behaviour, they are deteriorating and this shows their worsening state.Â
please keep in mind that while the above are somewhat medically accurate, you do not always have to be exactly precise in fiction — so maybe for your writing choose the group of symptoms that work for their situation and have fun with your newly concussed whumpee! feel free to also reference this post  if you want just a basic list of symptoms to play with. hope this helped!
okay but why aren’t concussions written more often?
whumpees experiencing headaches, drowsiness, vomiting and nausea , poor balance and gait, confusion, amnesia, disorientation, memory loss , light sensitivity?? should i go on?? blurred vision, double vision, slowed reactions, irritability, difficulty concentrating, slurred speech, loss of consciousness?? not convinced yet?? ringing in the ears, high temperature, difficulty staying awake and upright, seizures, sensitive to noise, personality changes, dizziness??
just give me some concussion whump, okay!

providing non-sexual dominance can be so fulfilling. making choices for someone who trusts you? gently guiding them with a hand on their back? drawing them closer when it's crowded? noticing and fixing their messy hair? leading them through busy areas by holding their hand? caring for their well-being by suggesting when to eat or sleep? god tier
im a fucking sucker for the “character gets so badly injured that they can’t think clearly and start calling for help in a distressingly vulnerable way.” characters who start using nicknames for their friends they haven’t used since they were kids. characters who start begging for their brother they haven’t seen in years to be there. characters who would usually use their parents’ names or call them mother/father/etc crying out mama when they go down. u understand.

The Grand A-Z List of Whump 1/3
This list contains ~290 items listed A to H
As always, I heavily encourage people to research topics thoroughly when writing as it is important to avoid stereotypes/misinformation. This list's intention is not to glorify/romanticise sensitive topics in any way.
This part one-of-three comprehensive lists of injuries, Illnesses and tropes - including those from the Whumptober 2023 trope vote!
All submissions are listed in italics, and those who wanted to be tagged will be included at the end. If you have any more submissions: please send them via DM/my ask box.
[I-Q] [R-Z] [NSFW List]
List below the cut:
The quiet misery of a slowly rising fever. Before the full onslaught of symptoms where subtle chills creep up on them, at first easy enough to blame on the weather or a draft in the room - until it settles under their skin where none of the extra layers can reach.
At work or an event the hours drag on through a growing haze. Longing to wrap themselves up, not sure why they suddenly feel so heavy or why everything - lights, the brush of fabric on their skin - seems sharp and jarring. And its cold. They clench their jaw to keep their teeth from chattering with the unexpected shiver. Strange, they think, the last time they felt this bad was when... Oh.

Sick characters fainting at work will always get me- the way they brush everyone else off who tries to get them to sit down, only for their knees to buckle, eyes rolling back as everyone rushes to their side.
"Whoa, Whumpee? Easy, easy..."
Limbs growing heavy, head lolling. Other characters trying to wake them up by lightly tapping their cheek, only to be met with nothing, Whumpee's face slack in unconsciousness.
You know what's cute? Whumpees who dissociate during high fevers.
Whumpee has been battling a high fever all day. Caretaker tries to sit them at the dinner table for some soup, to fill their belly so they can take some medicine. Poor fevered whumpee just sits there, listless, with a thousand yard stare and bright red cheeks. Caretaker tries to grab their attention, but it's all for nothing. Whumpee just keeps shivering and staring into the void.
Caretaker caresses their cheek. "You really are not feeling well, are you, sweetheart? Let's get some food into you and tuck you back in bed".
