Improv Philosophy

Improv is the art of instant creative collaboration using agreement and whatever is available in the moment.

Real practice has no purpose or agenda. So, it can welcome anything that comes.

When listening isn't happening and people are unheard, there's a loss of purpose and intentionality.

Be a student of the world. Nothing is too big or too small. Dig in to it all.

If you want to be a good improviser, start by believing that you are one.

You don't always have to justify things immediately. Sometimes it's best to let the scene breathe; leave some space for exploration.

You're already a great improvisor. You already have all of the tools inside of you. You just have to trust yourself enough to reveal them.

The scene is smarter than we are. Let it guide you.

The goal is to have fun and make connections.

They key to figuring out what happens next in a scene is remembering what has already happened.

When in doubt...just listen...

If you don't know about a topic that arises in a scene...it's ok. Commit fully anyway. And then go home and learn about it. You should always be open to learning and to being a student of life.

Let the world affect you.

You have as much say in the reality of the scene as the other person. Take mutual ownership.
