"i understood my maker. if i had seen 19 straight performances of my lélio, i would have abandoned all decorum too." a line that made my skin crawl. lestat tries to put the blame on himself by framing magnus's stalking of him as something he tempted magnus into doing (even though lestat knows that that's not true), inviting objectification of himself by the mere fact that he's an actor in a theater. cue to his father calling the performers of commedia dell'arte whores and whoremasters. lestat attempting to frame himself as a whore presenting himself like an offering, and magnus as someone that just couldn't help himself but accept that offer.
and this is also something that armand does with the harlequin lestat fanfiction. give lestat the role of the cunning mastermind that acts a fool and frame the performance as an invitation to sexualize the performer, frame lestat as a seductress that wants to be sexualized, so then he can't blame anyone for taking the bait.
making it look like he was asking for it, asking for stalking and objectification and sexual assault when he made the choice to become a performer, when he never had and never will
god i'm so glad louis killing bruce was as fucked up and empty and hollow as it was. i've been thinking about this moment for years now and like you can't bring her back. you can't go back in time and choose her over lestat and you wouldn't anyway because she was right and it's always been about him. you can't be there for her when it counted. lestat can't be there for her when it counted even though he understood her pain in the most direct sense. no matter how much bruce deserved to die killing him does absolutely nothing for claudia now and was never really going to be anything more than a consolatory gesture for the benefit of the people who weren't there for her when it counted. she was right. it's never been about her.
going to start saying "it's ok i have the blood of akasha in me" when faced with any kind of problem at all
the one band member thinking to himself that he's so glad lestat killed one of the tech guys and lestat going "dude I just fired him like a normal person" was an underrated moment tbh

Just finished "Something very bad is going to happen"
So Nellie was fucking right, huh? You just have to believe that your partner is your soulmate.
I watched the show with my sibling, when the curse was passed to the Cunningham's we were confused as to why Victoria was dying and Boris was not. Then Portia starts going down late and it's like, oh, it doesn't hit everyone at the same time. It just hasn't hit Boris yet. But then it never does, why? They're both a part of Nicky's bloodline, Victoria didn't have him all by herself.
At the very beginning of the show, I believe first episode, one of the first things Victoria says to Rachel is "I'm sorry for what this will do to you both," or at least something to that effect. She's not talking about the curse, she can't be. She doesn't know about it yet, none of them do at that point. She's simply talking about the marriage. So the woman who idealized and romanticized marriage to all her kids is sorry for what marriage will do to them both. What does that say about her own marriage? She doesn't know Rachel, it's not some commentary on her, no it's marriage as a whole. She clearly doesn't believe in it, in her own even. She doesn't think Boris is her soulmate. So she dies. But Boris? Boris idolizes Victoria, he puts her up on a pedestal. He thinks she's perfect, his soulmate. That's why he lives while she doesn't.
Then that gets you thinking, Nicky lived too. It's easy to think he was in the same mindset as Jules and Nell at the end. Simply trying to pass the curse back for their families sake (not that I blame them, they have a child to think about, the needs of the many outweigh the few). But I don't think that's true. He fully thought they were soulmates, he thought it woild stop the curse for his family and her. Because they're soulmates so she shouldn't die, right? Except she no longer believes they are, after everything I don't blame her.
But if this is all true and it's all about belief that means if Nicky had just said yes at the alter none of that would've happened. She was certain up there, she believed with her whole heart and that would've propelled them. It would've saved her. But...Nicky likes a good story.
what i find absolutely breathtaking about Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen is the consistency with how they show that men will not listen to what the women they love are saying to them until, yknow, Something Bad Happens.
Alexandra tells Jay that she wants to LEAVE bc the guy selling custard is creepy and weird. Jay keeps telling her it's fine and okay (things were not fine and okay).
Rachel tells Nicky she doesn't want to get married, and he admits later that when he heard that he literally thought "yep, that's the girl im gonna marry." Rachel tells Nicky she doesn't want to have children/give birth, and he just pushes past her worries and reasons and tells her it's all going to be fine. And he just doesn't respect Rachel's wishes until it is literally too late.
Marriage IS a death sentence for women bc so many men will want everything except for the women they claim to love to be an autonomous, complex person, who actually have their own beliefs and desires.

Sooooo....are we going to talk about how Jules ended up becoming The Sorry Man? How he, just like Rachel's dad, committed an act of betrayal to someone he cared about to protect his child, and in the end, the cycle just repeats itself because the child has already witnessed the violence. Rachel begins to bleed out, and all he can do is repeat how sorry he is as The Witness signs the contract on his back....
Just like Jules witnessed Rachel's mom dying and her dad ripping open her body to save Rachel, Jude witnessed his family bleeding to death....the parallel of Jules hiding under the bed and Alexandra reaching out for him to help her and Jules reaching out his hand to pull Jude out from under the table to get him away from the bloodbath....Rachel finding Jude after the end of everything and telling him to not let anyone tell him he's wrong about what he saw - encouraging him to not make the same mistake his dad made....
Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, written and directed by women, basically portrays marriage as a life-or-death curse, with an absolutely suffocating atmosphere from the very beginning. If women aren’t stuck in dysfunctional marriages, then they’re dealing with a terminal illness and dying on their wedding day or they’re Rachel, having anxiety attacks from the moment it becomes real that she’s getting married that weekend. Marriage and the expectations surrounding it, from a female perspective, as psychological horror. Dear God, it’s pure female gaze ecstasy. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this series.
horror element or not, marriage is a really scary thought and seeing it through the lens of a very anxious and paranoid person really does the trick. this is also a recommendation to watch something very bad is going to happen if you want to get the creeps
I'm still thinking about the foxes in "Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen," how they represent Rachel and her mother, Alexandra.
The fox Rachel finds in the bathroom in the very first episode is almost foreshadowing what was done to her mother's body upon her death/Rachel's birth.
The same way the fox Nicky traps later on runs away but leaves a foot behind and finds freedom, limping but alive. Rachel sacrificed not only a bone for the sake of the marriage working out, but also her life when it was deemed a failure.
It's almost like women have more to lose.
Where marriage is concerned, it is but a bloody pathway to the altar.
And then the fox howls and limps as Rachel drives away... It's so gutwrenching and beautiful. I'm going to go cry now.
was it casual when i helped you piece together your family history regarding your inherited curse and then helped you commune with your dead great aunt and was it casual when we made out the night before your wedding to my brother-in-law and ex boyfriend and was it casual when i called you rach and i have listened to you more than your own fiancé and was it casual when my soon to be ex husband and i removed one of your bones in a seemingly futile attempt to save your life and his bloodline

who asked for soulmates as the horror concept? wedding as the funeral? wedding as the curse? mother's love bending flow of time to warn her daughter? because girl...do i have a show for you........
One of the most absurdly ironic —but hilarious— moments in Something Very Bad is Going to Happen is when Jules goes from being a complete asshole to Rachel to literally turning into her unasked-for-and-unwanted older brother all because he sees her as the innocent victim of his childhood trauma and convinces himself the universe put her in his path so he can use her to heal that wound. So he basically becomes every girl’s best friend by exposing her fiancé (who is his ACTUAL brother) in front of 100 guests two days before the wedding. Honestly, one of the best subplots in the series and of course is created by women because that's a woman's fantasy lmao
