It becomes a thing. “Where’s your hubby?” and “How’s your wife?” and “Tell your husband to get his feet off the table.” Tony and Bucky are kind of in love with it. It’s probably the closest they’ll ever get, after all. “Honey, Steve was looking for you,” and “Sweetheart, they said you hadn’t eaten yet,” and “Honestly, why didn’t we leave them at the orphanage?” It’s fun. It’s innocent. So maybe they’re both putting a little more weight behind it than the other is aware. That’s okay.

And then there’s a battle, and Bucky takes an attack head-on. Steve sits at Bucky’s bedside. Tony is too afraid that he’ll look too needy. Bucky’s vulnerable; he doesn’t need all of Tony’s messy feelings all of him. Steve is exasperated because These Fucking Idiots and when Bucky finally blinks his eyes open, Steve is there to tell him, “Good job worrying your wife, asshole. Tony’s been going out of his mind.” Bucky blinks at him slowly in confusion. “Who the hell is Tony?” All the color drains from Steve’s face. “Oh, hell.”

Bucky doesn’t really remember any of them. Steve, definitely, and Natasha. No one else. Tony’s a little bit crushed about it. Bucky doesn’t know him. Maybe Bucky won’t want to get to know him again. He seems so overwhelmed. Tony sulks in his workshop. He’s not sure he would know how to act casually around him when everyone on the team had heard him scream when he realized Bucky was down.

Bucky is overwhelmed, but he still notices that Tony is avoiding him. Everyone keeps talking like they were an item. And he remembers what Steve said when he woke up—he’d worried his wife. Tony was avoiding him. His wife. He doesn’t get it but he figures that they must have been an item. Maybe that’s why Tony’s being so weird. They were together but now Bucky doesn’t remember him so Tony’s giving him space. God, Tony must be heartbroken. So Bucky takes it upon himself to be sweet to his… something. (Boyfriend? Lover? Husband? Why the fuck would Steve say ‘wife?’ But he can see it—Tony’s a bit of a mother hen.)

Loki turns him into a frog expecting Tony to not wanna pet a slimy animal….

Now look into my eyes and tell me again that frostiron isn’t canon.

Until he starts to develop…feelings. ‘Cause he’s - you know. He’s Sam.

And everything is messy and painful and soul-crushing. 

And there he is at college, studying at MIT to get more familiar with non-Vibranium tech (it’s developed so differently, with the need for power sources) until he goes on to infiltrate the Air Force

And then he gets a new roommate who’s this scrawny, touch-starved kid named Tony Stark and Rhodey gets attached
