...someone was asking me my opinion on Chainsmoker Cat and I did see like, the screenshots going around where it talks about the beastfolk having points reduced for lacking a last name, but...
like I think it's a really skewed impression, tbh.
whatever the show might have to say is kind of undercut by the way the show itself depicts the women.
I've watched shows with gross-out humour and liked them, it's not that - but it feels like the saving grace of these cat-girls behaving the way they do is very much in line with the born-sexy-yesterday trope
the main character, Yani, never seems like... deeply, existentially worried about the precariousness of her situation. she's hedonistic and selfish, and her saving grace in a lot of the situations she ends up in and where the comedy seems to rotate around is the fact that she's still sexually attractive.
like a good chunk of the humour just comes from the fact she doesn't wear a bra so her tits are just flopping around, so like adult men promptly pop a boner and feel too embarrassed to hold her to account.
actually even like. young boys. there's a super weird and uncomfortable scene where she plays soccer with some like, idk 10-11 y/o boys? who all promptly ogle her. which ??? is that realistic??? I kind of think kids that age would be more up-in-arms about some random adult trying to involve themselves in their game than the fact she doesn't wear a bra???
comedy doesn't have to be realistic but it's just... to what ends???
and it's the fact Yani is always completely clueless, too
a lot of the cat-girls don't feel like they really have much agency at all, like they're all just stupid and impulsive
one person I spoke to said this show has a good grasp of what addiction is like, and to some degree I suppose it does get into some of the nastier aspects of it, but on the other - it kind of does just treat addiction as another facet of just being too childish, too animalistic, too hedonistic.
Yani doesn't want to do anything except smoke and drink, and her character is too flat to pull off any more engaging or challenging plotlines around addiction - at least from what I've seen. I'm kind of not inclined to watch all the episodes at this point.
because like. that's the punchline. she has basically no self-awareness. most of the jokes revolve around her not realising how scandalous and inappropriate her behaviour is.
this is not like... a thoughtful commentary. I get the impression some of the interesting aspects of this show people have highlighted aren't really treated with much gravity - they're just set-dressing for gratuitous ogling.
which is a shame, but tbh, the show doesn't really pitch itself as much more than what it is, if you're watching in earnest.
