Teenage girls and young women are assumed to be the ‘ultimate consumer’ of culture. But no one shapes and creates the dominant culture as much as they do.

Women are positioned as the open mouthed vacuous maws dredging in cultural consumption (and material consumption, and the way in which women are positioned as uniquely evil in overconsumerist culture is an adjacent bone to be picked) and whatever they engage with - not that it's viewed as intelligent and agentic engagement - as vapid and worthless, yet it's women who loved Liszt, who loved the Beatles, who loved Supernatural - who loved a thousand different examples of 'high' and 'low' media, and even when said media is eventually celebrated, it's treating it as 'rescuing' it from association with women, who can't possibly actually have appreciated it's depth, and showing what it's 'really about', not acknowledging and engaging with the profundity they saw in the first place.
