one year ago, i beheaded a succulent in hopes of giving its stem a better life.

one year ago, i let it be ugly and scarred and full of potential.

and for one year, it did not grow anything. still, every week, i watered it and misted it and placed it with the other lively plants that were bursting at every node with vivid greens and pinks.

sometimes, i did not have faith that anything would come from these scars. sometimes, i stopped caring for this stump, potential and all.

but i kept coming back to it.

and today, after weeks of renewed sunlight flowing bright white through the window, smiling down on the stump, after a year of imperfect but committed care, i noticed something on my window sill.

small, plump, mighty bubbles of purple-pink-green rising out of the side of the scarred, seemingly dead little stump.

this sweet, small cluster peers up at me with hope and wonder and gratitude and all of the life ahead of it.
