I mean the word "mutt" specifically. Not the behavior as a whole.
"Fatty" is not a slur. Fat people are disregarded, treated terribly, etc etc, but "fatty" is still not a slur.
Similarly, if I were to use a specific insult for someone in a wheelchair, that wouldnt be a slur. The r word as a whole is. I am not saying the mutant type quirk holders are not oppressed, I'm saying specifically there is no explicit indication that "mutt" in and of itself is a slur in canon.
So where the fandom gets that idea, I still do not know.
As far as I know, it is still a derogatory term, not an actual slur. Same thing with bakugo. He uses derogatory words, not slurs. I dont think anything used in MHA is a slur unless theres a specific history tied to the word, not the people.
The N word is a slur because of the history related to the word itself. Same with the r slur. Now if mutt was said to be a widely used derogatory term for all dog types, and was directly used to oppress them in the form of some kind of history (eg if the officer grew up hearing it, or if it was an explicit label used against their kind like the aforementioned slurs) then yea. Its a slur. But as it stands, again as far as I am aware, it is a derogatory word. Same with what bakugo uses.
My argument is solely the word Mutt (and other such words) and how its treated as todoroki saying a slur of some kind, when the show gives no explicit history to any derogatory terms, hence none of them, as far as I am concerned, are slurs in canon.
The monkey one is the strongest example of my point, because as a woman of colour, I and several of my peers have been called monkeys. It is still not a slur. It just isnt. Its derogatory. But its not a slur. If I were to be called the N word, that would be a slur (albeit, wouldnt make sense, I'm indian.) But a slur. Calling me a monkey is racist, but its not using a slur. Nobody is doubting that all of these things are micro aggressions, but they aren't *SLURS.*
Same goes for all other words you mentioned. I dont think theyre slurs because again, no explicit history tied to that word. Its like calling someone fishlips, or a fivehead. Its derogatory relating to features, its still not a nice thing to say, but its not a slur. Its not the C word, the N word, the R slur, the F slur, or anything of the sort. They aren't *slurs.*
I still think calling these words slurs fundamentally dilutes the meaning of a slur. Slurs have deep roots in horrendous acts and beliefs, that just do not translate to the words specifically, not in canon. Maybe people choose to interpret them as slurs, but by the way a slur is defined, those words are not slurs. Derogatory does not mean slur.
I'd also appreciate if you'd comment/reply rather than reblog, because itll no doubt form a bunch of chains that I do not want.
