Tattletail: Give me a treat!

It's still set in the universe of Dispatch: Robert gets a job as a night guard for a museum dedicated to superheroes, and tries to keep a distance from the Mecha Man exhibit - yeah, not only is there a life-size waxwork of Robbie senior, Robert's got his own waxwork and it creeps him tf out.

Mandy is the museum curator whose latest endeavor is an exhibit geared towards putting the spotlight on lesser-known heroes - ones that were forgotten by history, former villains who were never remembered as anything else - but is struggling to get anyone to take her project seriously.

The Z-Team are part of the exhibit, waxworks, statues and models of superpowered criminals from different eras, and Robert has to deal with them coming to life at night. The Phlebonitum that allows them to come to life could be one of two things: a) the Blazer amulet, which is part of the museum's collection and currently under study, or b) the Astral Pulse.

Invisigal is a real person, but she's on the run and using the museum as a hideout. She decides to troll Robert a little by temporarily pretending to be one of the exhibits, just to see how long it'd take for him to catch on (hint: not very. not at all in fact).

J’ai un jour dit que Patrick Sobral ne savait pas écrire une sous-intrigue romantique, et que j’aimerais vraiment qu’il cesse de les forcer là où elles ne sont pas les bienvenues. Une petite réflexion m’a mené à la conclusion qu’il y a, tout compte fait, un potentiel pour des histoires d’amour intéressantes parmi ses six personnages principaux; c’est juste que le choix des combinaisons est un peu nul. Bien sûr, il s’agit là de sous-intrigues romantiques figurant dans un récit qui n’est pas une histoire d’amour, alors pas étonnant qu’on ne nous donne pas plus d’explications sur les raisons qui poussent tous ces gens à s’enticher les uns des autres, mais il devient plus dur de suspendre son incrédulité quand on se penche de plus près sur les différentes dynamiques de ces personnages. Les ménages officiels sont les suivants:

Danaël/Jadina: Un setup assez classique de chevalier et de princesse, Danaël est venu au secours de Jadina lorsqu’elle fut kidnappée pendant une mission d’escorte et ils se sont par la suite enfuis ensemble pour fonder les Légendaires. On n’observe pas le parcours qui mène ces deux personnages à tomber amoureux, plutôt on nous fait comprendre qu’ils le sont déjà, mais malgré le fait qu’ils soient tous deux adultes et qu’ils se connaissent depuis longtemps, Danaël et Jadina souffrent d’une certaine timidité réciproque. Il n’y a de toute évidence rien qui ne les empêche d’être ensemble, pas le statut princier de Jadina étant donné que ses parents l’on bannie de leur royaume, et pas non plus son ancien fiancé le prince Halan, vu que l’intérêt qu’elle lui porte est proche de zéro. Ils sont inoffensifs, mais leur histoire est quelque peu clichée, et manque un peu trop de piquant et de rebondissements à mon goût.

Razzia/Ténébris: Alors qu’ils étaient tous deux sous-fifres de l’antagoniste, Razzia a largué Ténébris le jour où il s’est rendu compte que c’était eux les méchants de l’histoire, et est parti rejoindre les Légendaires. Nous avons là affaire à un fantasme masculin tout ce qu’il y a de plus grossier: Un type au physique disgracieux ne semble pas voué à trouver l’amour, jusqu’à ce qu’on découvre qu’il a en fait une ravissante ex-copine qui lui est impitoyablement dévouée, et qui même après toutes ces années est toujours amoureuse de lui? Encore une fois, leur relation n’a droit à aucun développement puisque pour des raisons quelconques ces deux-là s’aiment déjà, à tel point que le virage de bord de Ténébris n’a que pour seul mobile l’amour qu’elle porte à «Korbo», alors que ce dernier n’a rien fait pour l’encourager à prendre une telle décision, préférerait largement qu’elle ne rejoigne pas l’équipe et lui dit d’aller se faire foutre dès qu’elle l’appelle ainsi. Leur histoire me laisse un peu tiède parce qu’à l’évidence, Ténébris n’est pas amoureuse de Razzia, mais plutôt de l’homme qu’il fut jadis, et on ne lui donne pas le temps d’apprendre à connaître ce nouveau modèle avant qu’ils ne se remettent en couple. Razzia de son côté associe Ténébris au mensonge, à la trahison et à la perte de sa famille au profit des noirs desseins du père de cette dernière. Avec ça, dans quel monde ces deux-là pourraient-ils reprendre comme si de rien n’était?

Gryf/Shimy: Homme-fauve narquois avec un lourd passé rencontre elfe orgueilleuse qui peut manipuler les quatre éléments. C’était censé être un petit couple chamailleur bien classique comme on les aime, mais ce n’est en réalité qu’une épouvantable catastrophe sans nom qui n’aurait jamais du avoir lieu. Gryf et Shimy ne se respectent guère, et par conséquent se traitent ni plus ni moins comme de la merde, à tel point qu’il est difficile de prendre parti. Gryf semble malade à l’idée de faire un petit effort pour communiquer avec Shimy, lui cache des choses et la traite comme si elle était indigne de sa confiance, ou comme si elle était une petite chose fragile, et finit même par la tromper avec une autre fille qu’il traite tout autant comme de la merde, bien que la fille en question soit, par l’ironie du sort, bien plus fragile que ne l’est l’idée que Gryf se fait de Shimy (#ShunDayMeritaitMieux). Shimy pour sa part suppose le pire de Gryf par principe et répond par la violence à tout affront, qu’il soit perçu ou légitime, et nous les lecteurs sommes censés trouver ça drôle parce que Shimy est une femme, et Gryf un homme. Les choses ne s’arrangent pas lorsqu’on constate qu’il y a entre eux deux une disparité de pouvoir assez conséquente; que sont Gryf et ses petites patounes face à Shimy, qui peut littéralement plier les éléments à sa volonté, et pourquoi diable voudrait-il rester avec une personne dont il redoute la réaction? Gryf est fréquemment décrit comme étant «le plus courageux des Légendaires», et pourtant, s’il y a bien un domaine où cela ne s’applique pas, c’est sa relation avec Shimy. Au point où on en est, j’aurais vraiment voulu que ces deux-là cassent pour de bon et tentent au mieux de redevenir amis.

Bien. Avant que quiconque ne tire de conclusions hâtives, mettons cartes sur table: je suis une lesbienne aroace qui ne shippe aucun personnage des Légendaires en particulier. Ado, j’étais très fan de la série et pensait que c’était de l’écriture de qualité, mais ayant grandi et tiré mes propres conclusions sur Sobral depuis le temps, je pense qu’il y avait peu de chance qu’il fasse de n’importe lequel de ses couples principaux une chose autre que hétérosexuelle, étant donné qu’il a déjà utilisé le wlw pour faire rire la galerie, et que le seul et unique couple homosexuel présent dans son univers est un couple secondaire, deux femmes de surcroît, qui se font espionner par Gryf de façon salace parce que Sobral est apparemment incapable de Ne Pas Rendre Ça Chelou.

Ayant dit ça, voici donc les combinaisons que je propose: Gryf/Jadina, Razzia/Shimy et Danaël/Ténébris.

Gryf/Jadina: Alors ça, c’est un couple puissant. Gryf et Jadina se respectent et se soutiennent mutuellement d’une telle force qu’aucune dispute ne saurait venir à bout du lien qui les unit, ce sont les Meilleurs Amis du monde (n’en déplaise à Danaël, le meilleur ami «officiel» de Gryf). Leurs parcours sont diamétralement opposées, elle une princesse et lui un gladiateur, et ils devraient de toute évidence n’avoir absolument rien en commun; cependant, ils ont tous deux été privés de leur liberté pour des raisons bien au-delà de leur contrôle (quoique dans des circonstances très, très différentes). Jadina ne se gêne pas pour reprendre Gryf quand il fait des conneries mais jamais de façon à le traiter comme un imbécile, et elle lui fait tellement confiance qu’il était à l’origine le seul parmi les Légendaires à qui elle ait fait part de son exil. Gryf, lui, ne traite non seulement pas Jadina comme si elle était en sucre, contrairement à Shimy, mais prête attention à ce qu’elle dit et a prouvé maintes et maintes fois qu’il la suivrait jusqu’au bout des enfers s’il le fallait – vous souvenez-vous de sa rage effondrée la fois où il a cru que Jadina avait été tuée et remplacée par une impostrice? Ils ont également un motif «la Belle et la Bête» récurrent et non-insignifiant que j’adore, et auquel Gryf fait lui-même allusion lorsqu’il vient sauver Jadina de son exécution dans le tome 14. Petit bonus, dans mon imaginaire personnel Gryf est bi, et s’il a un genre ce sont les mages dotés d’une puissance terrifiante mais aussi d’un coeur d’or, avec les cheveux noirs, la peau brune et les yeux clairs (Elysio et Jadina ont plus d’une chose en commun; t’es pas fin, Gryf). D’ailleurs, ils sont tous deux de sang royal; y aurait-il matière à forger une alliance politique afin de sortir les Jaguarians de l’ombre? C’est peut-être un peu tiré par les cheveux.

Razzia/Shimy: Fait intéressant, ces deux-là devaient à l’origine finir ensemble avant que Sobral ne se rende compte que le couple Gryf/Shimy avait beaucoup plus la cote auprès des fans - ce qui, entre nous, est une raison lamentable pour officialiser un ship. Shimy a un rapport assez décontracté avec Razzia, lui montre bien plus de soin qu’à n’importe quel autre de leurs compagnons et semble globalement le trouver plutôt attendrissant. Razzia de son côté adore Shimy et est toujours prêt à lui prêter une oreille si elle a besoin de vider son sac, tout en respectant ses limites personnelles, et dieu sait qu’il a sur elle une influence apaisante. On peut noter qu’ils forment à eux deux la composante musclée des Légendaires, l’un au sens propre tandis que l’autre a la faculté de se renforcer avec de la roche, je les vois tout à fait se faire des sessions muscu. Par ailleurs, le fait qu’ils ont plus que leurs compagnons de sérieux comptes à régler avec Darkhell fait qu’ils sont en mesure de se comprendre d’une façon que les autres Légendaires n’en seraient pas forcément capable – oui, Jadina se faisait fréquemment victimiser par Darkhell, mais on sait très bien que c’était le Bâton Aigle qu’il visait; Shimy s’est fait torturer, et je ne vous parle même pas de tout ce que lui a infligé Anathos. Tout ça reste assez frais et même après la disparition de ce dernier Shimy ressent toujours une évidente et profonde rancoeur. C’est peut-être en partie la raison pour laquelle elle se déchaîne si souvent et si violemment sur Gryf, qui lui n’est pas vraiment en mesure d’être là pour elle vu qu’il a d’autres chats à fouetter. Razzia, en revanche? Le ressenti de Shimy ne lui est pas inconnu, mais ses plaies émotionnelles ne sont pas aussi fraîches, et ont même fini par cicatriser avec le temps.

Danaël/Ténébris: Une occasion ô combien manquée. Donnez-moi plus de relations Enemies to Lovers qui le soient réellement et où la fille est la «méchante». Je pense à un extrait du film Princesse Mononoke, vous voyez lequel: «Je vais te trancher la gorge, comme ça je n’aurais plus jamais à entendre tes sottises!/Tu es si jolie». Danaël et Ténébris éprouvent du respect l’un pour l’autre, mais leur philosophies s’opposent de manière fondamentale. Ils s’interrogent et se mettent au défi de façon assez posée et raisonnable, et je verrais bien une intrigue partagée se muer en engouement à l’issue d’efforts mutuels pour se comprendre l’un l’autre. Danaël et son idéalisme à toute épreuve pousseraient Ténébris à remettre en question la vision qu’elle a du monde, ce qui donnerait lieu à un authentique et crédible arc de rédemption qui n’aurait pas jailli de nul part – à la base c’est une sous-fifre qui est apparu exactement une fois avant d’être vaincue en moins de deux, il y a quoi à rédimer, là – ou qui n’aurait pas pour seul motivateur le Grand Amûûûr. Danaël de son côté pourrait se rendre compte le plus il s’entretient avec Ténébris que tout n’est ni noir ni blanc, que personne n’est mauvais de naissance et que Ténébris fut tout autant influencée par son environnement que Danaël ne le fut par le sien. A ce propos, ces deux-là ont plus de choses en commun qu’ils ne l’imaginent, vu qu’ils ont tous deux grandi en l’absence d’une mère, partagent un passé militaire qu’ils ont fini par déserter (bien qu’elle était d’un grade plus élevé que lui), et ont déjà eu recours à des extrêmes pour le Plus Grand Bien – comme par exemple Danaël qui ordonne que Shimy soit mise à mort afin d’empêcher le retour d’Anathos, ou Ténébris qui justifie la mise à sac de Barabath comme un sacrifice nécessaire à l’unification d’Alysia dans un des flashbacks de Razzia. Petite touche finale, à eux deux ils forment la composante lame de l’équipe. Une partie d’escrime en amoureux, quelqu’un?

Disclaimer: This is all in good fun, and is merely a way for me to get this all out of my head before Brain stops Braining.

I once said that Patrick Sobral can't write a romantic subplot to save his life, and that I really wished he'd stop trying to shoehorn them where they're not needed. A bit of pondering has led me to the conclusion that there is, in fact, potential for good romances among Sobral's six leads; the combinations he chose to put them in just kind of suck. Of course, these are romantic subplots featured in a story that is not first and foremost a romance, so of course you don't get a whole lot of reason for why these people are attracted to each other, but one can only suspend one's disbelief for so long when taking a look at the character dynamics. The canon pairings are as follows:

Danaël/Jadina: Classic Knight/Princess setup, he rescued her when she was kidnapped during an escort mission and they ran away together and founded the Legendaries. You don't watch these two fall in love, you are given the understanding that they already are in love, but despite their being adults who have known each other for a long time, Danaël and Jadina suffer from a case of what Tv Tropes refers to as Twice Shy. There is demonstrably nothing actually standing in the way of their being together, not even Jadina's royal title given that her parents banished her, and definitely not her erstwhile fiancé prince Halan, in whom Jadina makes it pretty clear that she has approximately zero interest. Not offensive, but relatively cliché and all in all pretty bland and predictable.

Razzia/Tenebris: Former co-Dragons to the villain, he dumped her when he realized they were actually the baddies and joined the Legendaries. This is a complete wish fulfillment fantasy; A not conventionally attractive dude has no indication of a love interest until it turns out that he has a beautiful, murderously devoted ex-girlfriend who even after all these years is still very much in love with him? Again, there is no buildup to them falling in love because they somehow already are, to the point where Tenebris's entire reason for deciding that she wants to be on the "good" side is that she is still in love with "Korbo" (Razzia's villain name), who on his end hasn't actually done anything to inspire this decision, would much rather she didn't join the team and tells her to fuck off every time she calls him Korbo. Their romance doesn't do it for me because she's in love with who he used to be, and isn't given nearly enough time to get to know this new version of him before they get back together, while he on his part associates her with lies, betrayal and the trauma of losing his family to her father's forces. Knowing this, how could they ever pick up where they left off?

Gryf/Shimy: Snarky beastman with a Past meets proud elf who can merge with the four elements. Is meant to be your run-of-the-mill bickering old married couple, is in fact an absolute dumpster fire that never should have happened. Gryf and Shimy don't appear to respect one another at all, and consequently treat each other like absolute crap, to the point where neither of them comes out of it looking better than the other. Gryf appears to be utterly allergic to communicating with Shimy to the point where he keeps her in the dark about a lot of things and generally treats her like she's unworthy of his trust, or like she's fragile, and winds up cheating on her with another girl who he also treats like crap despite the fact that said girl is, ironically, way more fragile than he believes Shimy to be (#ShunDayDeservedBetter). Shimy on her part assumes the worst of Gryf on principle and reacts to any perceived or legitimate slight by physically abusing him, and we the audience are meant to find this funny because Shimy is a woman and Gryf is a man. This isn't made any better by the fact that there is a significant power imbalance between the two: what can Gryf's claws do when Shimy can literally bend the elements to her will, and why would anyone want to be with someone who puts the fear of God in them? Gryf is frequently referred to as "the bravest of the Legendaries" and yet somehow, dealing with Shimy is the one area where this does not apply. There just came a point where I really wished these two would break up for good and try their hand at being friends again.

Now. Before anyone makes any assumptions, I should mention that I am an aroace lesbian who does not actually ship any ships from Les Légendaires. Teenage me was an avid fan and used to think this was quality writing, and having grown up and drawn my own conclusions on Sobral since then, I think it highly unlikely that he would have made any of his main pairings anything other than heterosexual, given that Sobral has already been known to use les yay as a joke and the only same-sex pairing seen in his works is a side couple, two women at that, who get lecherously spied on by Gryf because Sobral apparently couldn't just Not Make It Weird.

Knowing this, here are the combinations that I propose: Gryf/Jadina, Razzia/Shimy and Danaël/Tenebris.

Gryf/Jadina: Power couple as fuck. Gryf and Jadina respect and support each other so goddamn much that no disagreement could ever make their bond any less strong, they are the Best Friends to ever Best Friend (no shade to Gryf's canon best friend, Danaël). Their upbringings are diametrically opposed, she a princess and he a gladiator, and they should by all rights have nothing in common, but they share a common experience of being denied their very freedom because of (granted, very, very different) circumstances beyond their control. Jadina will rightfully call Gryf out on his nonsense but never in a way that is meant to make him feel like an idiot, and she trusts him so much that he was initially the only other Legendary she apparently confided in about her banishment; Gryf not only doesn't treat Jadina like she's made of glass (which is how he treats Shimy) but listens to her, and has proven again and again that he will follow her to hell and back - remember his heartbroken rage when he thought Jadina had been killed and replaced by an impostor? These two also have a not-insignificant recurring Beauty and the Beast motif which I love, and which Gryf himself lampshades when he rescues Jadina from her execution in book 14. As a bonus, I personally headcanon Gryf as bi, and in my head his type is smart, kind-hearted and ludicrously powerful mages with dark hair, brown skin and light-colored eyes (Jadina and Elysio have more than a few similarities; I see you, Gryf). Also, they're both royals; potential for a political alliance meant to get the Jaguarians out of the shadows? Maybe that's too convoluted.

Razzia/Shimy: Fun fact, these two were originally going to be a canon pairing before Sobral realized that Gryf/Shimy was more popular with the fans (arguably a horrible reason to make a ship sail). Shimy has a more easy rapport with Razzia and shows him more genuine care than to any of the others, though she also enjoys teasing him in earlier books and generally seems to find him quite endearing. Razzia conversely thinks the world of Shimy and always lends her an ear if she needs to talk while also respecting her boundaries, and goodness knows what a calming influence he has on her. It bears noting that the pair of them are the muscle component of the Legendaries, he in the literal sense while she can magically enhance herself with rocks, I can totally picture them working out together. Also, the fact that the two of them have more personal beef with Darkhell than any of their comrades means that they get each other in a way that the others might not - yes, Jadina was a frequent target of Darkhell's, but the Eagle Staff is what he actually wanted; Shimy was full-on tortured, and that's not even getting into what went down with Anathos. All of that is still pretty fresh and even once Anathos is gone, Shimy understandably still has a lot of residual anger. This is probably partly the reason why she lashes out at Gryf so often and so violently, but he isn't really in any position to truly be there for her given that he's currently going through his own shit. Razzia, on the other hand? He's no stranger to how Shimy feels, but his emotional wounds are not as fresh, in fact they've pretty much scarred at this point.

Danaël/Tenebris: Such a missed opportunity. Give me more Enemies to Lovers that is actually Enemies to Lovers and where the girl is the "evil" one. I'm thinking that one scene from Princess Mononoke, you know the one: "I'll cut your throat! That'll shut you up/You're beautiful". Danaël and Tenebris are shown to respect each other but are also fundamentally opposed in their philosophies. They challenge and question one another in a relatively professional and level-headed manner, and I could see a mutual intrigue blooming into admiration as each attempts to work the other out. Danaël's unrelenting idealism would give Tenebris the push she needs to actually question her view of the world, which would give her a real, believable redemption arc that wouldn't come out of nowhere - she was a one-off henchwoman who got dealt with pretty quickly, honestly what was there to redeem - or indeed be boiled down to Doing It For Love. Danaël on the other hand could come to realize the more he interacts with Tenebris that it's not all black and white, that no one is born evil and that Tenebris was just as much shaped by her environment as he was by his own. Speaking of which, they actually have more in common than they think since they both grew up motherless, have a shared military past that each ended up defecting from (she ranked higher than he did though) and they also have been known to go to extremes for the sake of the Greater Good - like for instance Danaël deciding to have Shimy killed to keep Anathos from coming back, or Tenebris justifying the sack of Barabath as a necessary sacrifice for the unifying of Alysia in one of Razzia's flashbacks. As a nice final touch, together they make up the blade component of the team. Sparring date, anyone?

Milo Thatch - Zelda -> it just makes more sense for her personality to make her the passionate scholar rather than the warrior princess.

Kida Nedakh - Link -> less an actual prince and more of an out-of-time wild child who was taken in by the king and queen.

Preston Whitmore - Impa

Commander Lyle Rourke - Ganondorf

Lieutenant Helga Sinclair - Riju -> much less overtly villainous than Helga, and in fact turns against Ganondorf pretty quickly once he lays a hand on the royal family. She's also not the one who recruits Zelda; Paya is the one who takes Helga's role in that particular instance.

Dr. Joshua Sweet - Sidon -> the Zora have healing powers and he is one gigantic sweetheart.

Audrey Rocio Ramirez - Tulin -> young airship mechanic. Teba was part of the expedition that found the Journal/Tablet.

Vincenzo "Vinny" Santorini - Yunobo -> because of the whole explosions thing, though the personality is drastically different.

Gaëtan "Mole" Molière - Josha -> up the child prodigy aspect rather than Mole's overwhelming weirdness (given that Josha is the head of the Depths investigation team this just makes sense to me).

Wilhemina Packard - Purah

Jebidiah "Cookie" Farnsworth - Robbie -> these two are undercover as the communications officer and cook respectively and were in fact tasked by Impa to keep an eye on Ganondorf (all those moments where Packard is gossiping with her friend Marge instead of watching comms? That's Purah reporting directly to Impa through code); they take over the expedition after Ganondorf betrays everyone.

Kakeshim Nedakh - Rauru -> create a role for Mineru - makes more sense for her to become queen after Rauru's death than for Link to become king.

The Queen - Sonia

The Leviathan is either the Colgera or a giant Flux Construct. Maybe even a literal Divine Beast.
