The significance of tragedies is most easily grasped on the basis of paradox. Since everything originary, because all powers are divided impartially and equally, does not appear in its original strength, but rather in its weakness, so it is that the light of life and appearance quite properly belong to the weakness of every whole. Now in the tragic, the sign is in itself insignificant, ineffectual, but the originary is forthright. Properly speaking, the originary can only appear in its weakness, but insofar as the sign in itself is posited as insignificant = 0, the originary, the latent ground of every nature can also be presented. If nature properly presents itself in its weakest offering, so it is that the sign, when it presents itself in its strongest offering, = 0.
