Tick.

She was quite literally going insane. Her eyes were stinging from overuse, and simultaneously ached when she tried to close them. Her ears were ringing. There was a mattress spring lodged stubbornly into her back. Her pyjamas clung to her body wrong. Her mouth was dry. This was the second week in a row that she had spent every night awake. And this was on purpose. it started innocently a few months ago. She had a very vivid dream, which seemed to take place within some medieval European setting. It certainly seems to be - the architecture, the clothing, the weaponry. She was looking through someone else’s eyes. The landscape was beautiful. However, as the dreams continued, they became increasingly more disturbing. One night, for example, she fell asleep only to be met with a scene of what can only be described as intense medical distress. One of the men had been injured badly, and blood was everywhere. As the person looked down, she caught sight of their hands sewing frantic stitches into a large, oozing gash. The sounds of screaming were deafening. She had woken up in an instant, turned her light on in fear, and didn’t sleep for the rest of the night.
As soon as she had managed to harness her fatigue, and was inching closer to sleep, her alarm rung.
typical.

the rest of the day dragged on.
Essay research, seminar reading, replying to countless pointless emails, lecture, seminar, getting stuck talking to that ‘friend’, more research, essay planning…
5 hours earlier
The only saving grace was her plans for tonight. A university club she attended was hosting a Mamma Mia social night, which she and her friends had all agreed to go to together. Of course, y/n loved Mamma Mia, so that was an immediate win. More importantly, she yearned for the distraction, and hoped that it would somehow make her so tired that she’d fall asleep without dreaming (she was that that desperate).
She had the perfect clothes picked out too! A cheeky deal she’d managed to make on Vinted led to her acquiring a gorgeous blue beaded top, which had a bare back except for the lacing holding the front together. It was definitely out of her comfort zone, but it was Mamma Mia! If she didn’t go all out then the gods of abba would forever look down on her unfavourably! She wore with this a white maxi skirt and brown boots.
2 hours earlier
When she and her friends arrived at the social, and met with the others they knew, y/n had almost been able to forget… almost. The large group was laughing, joking, and chatting. Songs from the movie were blasting in the bar they had packed out; the current song was Voulez-Vous (the best I don’t care), and everyone was dancing together. As the chorus blasted out of the speaker, y/n coincidentally gazed out of the window. Well, what she thought was the window.
It couldn’t have been a window, because what she was looking at was definitely not 21st century England. And who she was looking at was definitely not herself.
She did a double take, blinking hard, and yet, the man in the window was still there. He was tall, with blonde hair and sharp features. He was wearing a green tunic, with a white under shirt and silver chain mail. A long blue scarf was draped across one shoulder, with armour secured to his other. Brown leader belts were strapped across his chest, and a sword jutted out from behind him, secured to his back. Most striking, though, were his eyes. They were the sort of blue that you would imagine sapphires to be. Rich, and piercing. The surface that y/n was looking out of must have been some sort of portrait. Whatever it was, he was examining it closely, tilting his head in concentration and furrowing his eyebrows. Behind him, a group of men had their backs turned, stood around a dark wooden table. The room thy were in was grand, with stone walls adorned with paintings. Bookshelves piled with manuscripts lined the left side of the room, whilst a tall series of arched windows were on the right. Candles were lit throughout the space.
He couldn’t see her, that she knew. Because if he could, he would have backed away in an instant. Y/n’s jaw was wide open, eyes wide, and she remained still as a statue… Until a loud collection of shouting and jeering and laughing broke her away from her trance. The drinking game that they were playing had reached her, and the entire group had seen her staring out of the window into the dark, empty sky. She had to drink to that.
‘Are you okay? You’ve been like this for weeks now,’ her friend asked sincerely.
‘Yeah! Im fine! Just ignore me!’ Y/n replied a little too cheerfully. The illusion was almost perfect, except for her shaking hands which threatened to spill her drink all over her skirt. ‘You know what? I think you need a night out - it’ll distract you from everything!’
‘I’ll be fineee…’ She replied, a bit too quickly.
After a few minutes of the back and forth, y/n succeeded in avoiding a night out.
10 minutes earlier
Y/n waved off her friends as they left the bar, and promptly began power walking back to the student flat she shared. She was shaking, but not from the cold. Surely she had imagined that?
The streets were eerily silent, and the only sound was the clicking of her boots on the pavement.
2 minutes earlier
She was nearing her flat now, and walking even faster than she had been. She needed to get home now. She kept her eyes forward, avoiding any reflective surface in sight. Her breathing was jagged.
And suddenly, she fell.
~
After falling through what she could only describe as an intergalactic sinkhole, landing in a freezing cold, murky lake, and getting chased by a horde of strange creatures, nothing stuck out to her more than the boy. She remembered it so clearly, despite the head injury.
She ran head first into a firm chest whilst trying to escape the monsters. Startled, and beginning to tumble forwards into the body, she clutched at the persons chest desperately, feeling their own hands grip onto her back and they tried to steady themself. Thinking for a second that she had collided with another one of those pig-creatures, she instantly looked up in panic, only to be met with the same unmistakable blue eyes that she had seen only hours before in the bar. It was him. He looked down in a similar shock, cheeks burning red and breathing shakily like she was herself.
All too quickly, the moment was lost at the ugly shrieks of the monsters. She was pulled into the man’s side, who had already unsheathed his sword and raised his shield. It was uncanny how similar the weaponry was to what she had encountered in her medieval history class. She was, however, not prepared for the reality of armed conflict. Despite having martial arts experience, she had never trained with weaponry, and felt immediately out of her depth. It was only through the right arm looped around her torso that she found any grounding.
That grounding was lost, however, when the man quickly rushed to save his youngest companion from certain death at the claws of a giant lizard creature. It was in that split second that she was separated from the group which she had already decided to trust, that she was surrounded by a trio of the pig-like creatures.
She turned to the man, who had begun rushing towards her. Their eyes met, and she saw black.

The girl had been knocked out for hours now. Warriors had insisted on taking both first and second watch, despite Time’s efforts to make him finally rest. Couldn’t he see? Wars needed to stay awake. It was his fault that the girl had been injured. His fists tightened at the thought of what may have happened to her should Wild not have taken the bokonblins down fast enough. He was sat, staring into the flames of the campfire, next to the bedding which the group had compiled for the girl. He looked down, and another pang of guilt hit his chest. He closed his eyes and took a breath. He didn’t even notice the girl’s eyes flutter open.

Wars x Reader - falling for you
Chapter 1, chapter 2
this is my first piece of writing, and I’m fully winging it 😛. Sorry if it’s wordy, I’m doing a history degree and wordiness is part of the package I fear.
after re-reading it, I realise that it is very long, so I apologise 💀

The chain gathered at the peak of a hillside in Wild’s era, searching for the best location to set up camp for the night. The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, painting the sky a vivid pink and casting a golden light across the landscape.
‘I think that the clearing near that river looks promising’, Time suggested thoughtfully. There was an open patch of grass littered in wildflowers no more than a ten minute walk from their current location. The suggestion evoked a small chorus of agreement throughout the group. ‘But what about over there? There’s less woodland surrounding that spot, so less threat of an ambush.’ Four interjected, hand running across his chin in thought. It was true. The more open space they had, the better. There had been a noticeable increase in monster attacks recently, and it was sensible not to take any risks.
The ongoing debate did little to interest Wars. Despite his usual command and presence in the strategic decisions of the group, his attention had instead been drawn to the sky, morphing into even deeper, more dramatic shades of pink and lilac. He’d been distracted a lot lately, and the others had definitely began to notice. Legend was quick to use this distraction to his advantage, of course, much to the captain’s annoyance. He sighed, and took a breath. He had to focus. He had to. He just… couldn’t.
Whilst the others had noticed his current mental state, he hadn’t revealed to them why yet. He was far too embarrassed, and confused, to do so. He wasn’t even sure how he would say it. For the past few weeks, he’d been having… dreams. Of course, dreams weren’t exactly revelatory. The others had all sorts of dreams all the time. What was different about these dreams, however, was that he truly couldn’t comprehend what he had seen. He was looking through the eyes of someone else; that he could understand. What he couldn’t grasp was what he was seeing. Paper thin folding devices with moving pictures which appeared and changed with the press of a square button, much more advanced than Wild’s Sheila slate. Wagons which moved without any horses. Strange writing everywhere, in a dialect he had never come across, even when he was working with communication from across the whole Kingdom in his military career. Every now and again, in the windows of a building or the shiny surface of the weird folding device, he would catch a glimpse of someone. He could just about make out the outline of her hair, and the curve of her jaw, before she looked away. The dreams first appeared spontaneously - once every week or two. But they had steadily increased, to the point that he expected it each night. He was confused, and completely unsure about how to proceed. Of course, he was no stranger to the ways of the Goddess, and he was certain that this was of her doing.
Wars was so deeply distracted by his own thinking, that he almost missed the weird dot that appeared in the sky. The weird dot that was growing bigger… and began to take the form of a portal…
‘Umm… guys… you might want to see this…’

(y/n) was hurrying home from a social event at a university society. The theme was Mamma Mia, and she was dressed accordingly in boots, a white maxi skirt embellished with lace and a gold belt, a blue sequinned triangle top that tied together at the back, and cute little gem stones on her eyelids. She had crafted a story about sold out tickets to get out of going to the club night afterwards with her roommate, and instead planned on cooking her frozen pizza and curling up in bed for the rest of the night (the dream).
What she didn’t expect was to step into a void. Because wtf.
The ground where her foot should have landed had ceased to exist, replaced by a tunnel of darkness. As quickly as it had appeared, the void in the floor disappeared, leaving the street which she had just been on completely silent.
(y/n) on the other hand, was not silent at all.
She screamed and shrieked, and thrashed about. She felt as though she had been swallowed up by the earth (not really a good metaphor to be honest, because it was true), or plunged into the depths of the ocean. She was flipping and twisting in every direction imaginable, and only when she opened her eyes did she notice the large, murky body of water which she was about to crash into. (Rip her eyelid gem stones 😔)
~
Just as the rest of the chain turned around, their jaws dropped in almost perfect synchronisation. In the middle of the sky, a portal shifted and churned.
‘What in the world is a portal doing up there? We can’t get there in time to pass through, surely?!’ Sky quickly noted. The others had only just begun to express their concerns when they were, for a second time, silenced by what was in front of them.
A body fell out of the portal, screaming unwaveringly, dropping at a rapid pace until the sound of a splash was heard.
‘Quick!’ The chain didn’t hesitate when Warrior barked the orders. When there was a portal, whatever happened was immediately their problem.
For the first time in a while, Wars had perked up. He took a position at the front of the group, drew his sword in caution, and led the chain alongside Time and Twilight to the crash site. He didn’t know what it was that had changed in him so suddenly, but he sure as hell wasn’t waiting around to find out.
~
Her head sprung up from the murky depths of the small lake which she had landed in, gasping for breath. She desperately paddled and waded to the bank of the water, clutching her chest in shock and pain. The fall had winded her beyond what she thought was possible, and the skin on her arms had already begun turning a shade of red from the sting of the landing.
Her laboured breaths fell silent when she heard a snort, and the clinging of metal.
Pig?
She was sure pigs didn’t make metallic sounds?
The snort was soon joined by other snorts, and grumbles, and more definitely not-pig sounds. The nearby undergrowth began to shake too.
She stood up hurriedly, glued to the spot in fear. At the moment of climax, a sort of boar-like creature shuffled out of the bushes.
‘Aww… okay.’ She said. Because really, what else could she say to a boar.
However, when an arrow pierced the ground near inches away from the boar, she then jumped back in shock.
‘WOAH!’ She cried, startled by the boar’s sudden charging away. The snorting sound which she had heard before returned, louder than ever. This time from the undergrowth, a large group of mutant-pig-like-creature-things stomped out in her direction.
There was a moment of silence. She thought maybe she was hallucinating. When one came closer to her, and suddenly produced a shriek louder than anything she had ever heard before, causing Green spit to coat her face, she realised that she was not.
Before she knew what was happening, she was sprinting away faster than she had ever ran before. Her skirt gathered in one of her hands to avoid tripping over, while the other hand clothed to her chest (unfortunately, the cuter the top, the looser the tits). She made the mistake of turning back, only to find that more of the creatures had joined the original group. There were others, too, filing into the ranks which freightened her even more; lizardy-things, tall-moose-pig things and one-eyed-bats? She didn’t have time to worry about the composition of the creatures though.
(y/n) caught sight of a dense thicket of woodland, seeing an opportunity to hide and divert the now quite large group of creatures chasing her.
As she turned the corner of a large outcrop of rock within the woodland, she collided face-first into a chest.
~
Wars was speeding ahead of the rest of the chain.
‘Y’ got a’ wait for us, Wars! We need t’ stick t’gether!’ Twilight tried to shout some sense into him, but Wars wasn’t having any of it.
He was almost running at this point, so close to where the person from the portal had fallen. As he weaved around a large outcrop of rock, he jolted backwards from the impact of something into his chest.
He stumbled backwards in surprise, gripping onto the thing that had collided with him for some sense of balance. When he looked down, time stopped.
Piercing green eyes, wide with shock, gazed straight back into his. The girls plush pink lips heaved in laboured breaths, and her freckled cheeks were tinted red - judging by how hot he suddenly felt, Wars was sure his cheeks were a similar shade. The more he looked at her, the more shocked he became. He knew that hair… and that nose shape. He recognised the curve of her jaw, too. Before he could do anything, however, a bloodcurdling war cry sounded from the tree line, and bands of bokoblins, lizalfoes and moblins tumbled into the clearing, all with their dark eyes centred on the girl.
He pushed her behind him, and the rest of the chain piled into the forest clearing with their weapons drawn. Wild was plucking down the arriving monsters with his bow from a perch on top of the rocky outcrop, whilst hyrule and legend stood back to back, blades swiping at the lizalfoes that surrounded them. Twilight had shifted into Wolfie, making quick work of the bokoblins which neared the group. Sky was occupied by taking’s down a particularly large moblin, whilst Wind, Four and Time assaulted the rest of the monsters.
Wars’s only priority was protecting the girl. He wasn’t sure why. It felt instinctual. He held her close to his body, covering her with his shield and masterfully slicing through any creature that dared come close.
He made the mistake of stepping away for a second and helping Wind, who was about to become overwhelmed by a group of lizalfoes. When he turned around, three bokoblins had surrounded her, and the one wielding a club had struck her in the head before she could react, rendering her unconscious. The same bokoblin lifted her body onto its shoulder, and began to run away from the scene. At the same time, the rest of the remaining monsters all began to flee.
Quickly overcoming bewilderment, Wars sprinted in their direction. Luckily, Wild had understood the task at hand quickly, and shot down the remaining monsters. As the bokoblin holding the girl was shot, and disintegrated into dust, her body rolled onto the ground.
As Wars reached her, he worried instantly at the sight of blood on her forehead, undoubtedly from the blunt force of the club which struck her.
‘That was really weird, right?’ Wild questioned.
‘It certainly was. I’ve never seen monster behaviour like that before’ Time interjected.
‘Why do you think they were targeting her?’ Four added. Wars wasn’t listening to their conversation anyway. He patted the blood from the painful-looking gash on her forehead, and removed his scarf. He wrapped the blue fabric around her shoulders, gently lifting her body into his arms. The adrenaline in his system hadn’t died down yet, and he took shaky breaths as he tried to calm his racing mind. Was she really who he thought she was? Did that mean that what he was seeing in his dreams was real? Why was she here? Why now?
~
If you made it to the end, then THANKYOU!
I have nothing else to say.
