( + detail how you really feel about your groupâs musical direction )
hyejin was shocked by glimmerâs debut concept, truly.
while training at 99 entertainment -- as well in her participation on produce project -- the idol had been complimented mostly on her charismatic performances when it came to girl-crush concepts. naturally, she was anticipating a concept for herself along those lines. but a summery, fresh vibe? she was not expecting to debut with something as bright as that.
earning a spot on the debuting team for produce project, hyejin was expecting their debut song to be some cliche, youthful jam that was catchy enough to be stuck in heads for a while. sheâd also expected that glimmerâs debut track would be much more girl crush. however, when she was called in to listen to the song and record it, she was more shocked than she had intended to be. it had taken all her strength not to protest against the song, not to tell their manager that she didnât want to debut with this concept and that she would opt out if they didnât change it.Â
she didnât want her to group to have the reputation as young and fresh. she wanted to be so intimidating that people were fearful, and she wanted their debut to be a hit that had a rap verse for shizuku and a dance break where she could show off her skills.
but that didnât seem to be the case, it turned out.
wag zak was a good song too in hyejinâs opinion --- plenty of good beats and a nice rhythm to dance easily too. yet, it was just a little too bright for her taste, too sweet. the teen preferred something darker, she wanted it in fact. although she was young, she had been looking forward to a concept that was more sensual, more captivating. it also was harder to act onstage. hyejin was used to acting intimidating, too cool for anyone, but now she had to put on a constant, bright smile. for a girl as poisonous as hyejin, the whole smile thing is proving to be torture.
but maybe she was chosen for this because of her age, after all it would make sense.
without a doubt, the company would still market her unique features despite the young concept --- hopefully in spreads where she didnât appear to be a girl, rather a woman. she was after all almost nineteen and definitely preferred to appear older rather than younger. it was all in good faith as from some meetings with management, it was in fact revealed that she would begin her modeling career as a debuted idol soon enough --- she also wouldnât have to stick to her groupâs âbrightâ concept but would set out to find a concept of her own, adaptive to her personality and comfort level. this revelation definitely quelled the internal vexation she held towards 99 entertainment.
hyejin just hoped that as the years went on, sheâd be able to show her more charismatic side and, in addition, not have to be so bright and peppy all the time.

( + produce project finale : a personal appeal )
itâs no secret by now that joo hyejin isnât the greatest human being ever.
one would have to be completely oblivious if they hadnât noticed any of the events involving hyejin in the last few episodes of the show: to be exact, her problematic conversations with both song suran and bae hwarin--- the exact moments that led the public eye to deeming her âsuspiciousâ.
it wasnât a surprise when the showâs producers called her in for another personal interview, letting her know that this one was about her reaction to those criticizing her personality--- aka those calling her a âfoxâ and blaming her for the bullying rumors on the show. hyejin was fine with this; after all, this was her time to show off the tears she had been waiting so eagerly to share on the show. she knew exactly what she would say and how she would say it.Â
it would be tough to sell, but hyejin wasnât one to lack confidence in her abilities.
she could do this.
situated in front of the camera for the personal interview with a producer, hyejinâs eyes are downcast--- a look of pure dejection clearly painted atop her features. this is it, she voices inside her head.Â
time to act my ass off.
once the producer lets her know they are filming, hyejin slowly looks up toward the interviewer, her ruby lips quivering as tears began to well up in her eyes. she waits for the question to be asked ( âhow are you doing?â ) before shaking her head rapidly from side to side. hyejin takes a shaky breath, looking up at the ceiling momentarily as if to appear to be trying to hold back tears. a quick smile is feigned briefly before she speaks. thereâs a shrug.
ânot too good.â
at this moment, she lets her bottled up tears out; the cold, wet drops sliding slowly down her cheeks. a hand raises to try and cover them up out of a faux shame while another beckons for a tissue. once the piece of cloth is received, hyejin dabs gently under eyes, sniffling as she begins to calm down. her tone comes out almost a whine, however the volume is softer than her usual loud voice.
âi never meant for my words to be mean or anything--- i guess thatâs just my personality. iâm a bit more forward, maybe itâs because iâm young .. i donât know.â
âsuran was my friend and i hated to see her leave, and to see people blame me for it---,â hyejin cuts herself off, pretending to be stopped by a growing lump in her throat as her face scrunches up again and she cries even harder. itâs tough for her not to scowl or vomit as she says these words, but she forces them out of her lips. it surely would help her defense, no doubt. catching her breath, hyejin continues on as tears continuously exit her dark hues, one after one. âhwarin and i are good friends too, iâm really comfortable with her now and i guess that appeared to be not so great.â
thereâs a pause. hyejin takes this time to use another tissue to dry her cheeks, hiccuping as she calms herself down. the interviewer speaks again, softly.Â
âanything you want to say to those at home?â
the dark-haired teen nods her head quickly, looking down for a moment at the tissue crumpled up in the palm of her hand. looking back with a calmer look on her tear-stained face, hyejin makes eye-contact with the camera lens. her voice is steadier, although still soft. âi sincerely apologize to the viewers who were offended by my actions.âÂ
âiâll take their comments about my personality seriously, and i hope to do better in the future.âÂ
she pauses again for a dramatic effect. hyejin sighs before simply stating.
and if she did, suhee assumes she saw the glint in her eye too, the way that she flipped her hair.Â
she approaches the younger girl with care, one eyebrow quirking up in a question.  â do you think drinking underage at a work event is glamorous? or are you just so shameless that you donât care? â
she feels a thrill, a rush of adrenaline --- an excitement relatively new to her. sneaking drinks seemed a good idea to the young girl, and it still was; she was having a blast, after all. lurking in the shadows of the adult party, the trainee snatched unmonitored drinks and claimed them for her own, wanting to join in on the fun her friends were having. she was one of the youngest and so far it proved utterly unfair, a setback at best. only one other time did she ever drink, leading to her still being unable to figure out her limit for drinks. thankfully, it was only after a couple of drinks this night that she felt sick and decided to stop--- at this point, she was rather drunk, but still able to function properly. her emotions, however, were all over the place. additionally, there was a large chance she wouldnât remember any of this if she continued on.
then she sees suhee. disdain easily makes its way onto hyejinâs face, her emotion obvious for anyone watching. the other girl had begun to look at her, obviously sober and obviously judging.
was that a smile?
she feels a sudden surge of hot anger, infuriated by the look on the otherâs stupid face. what was her problem? did she really want to start something now?
before hyejin knew it, suhee was in front of her and speaking to her, words of pure judgement coming out; the trainee has the sudden urge to pounce on her labelmate. shameless? oh, she did not. but hyejin restrains herself, taking deep breaths as she struggled to properly enunciate her words.
âdonât you judge me,â her words are venomous, eyebrows lowered and her dark hues narrowed. feeling a burp moving up her throat, hyejin pauses for a moment, raising a balled up fist to her mouth before letting it loose again once the sensation passes. using the same manicured hand, hyejin shakily points downwards towards the floor. her own eyes follow her hand and look towards the flats that adorned her feet, both extremely expensive and stylish. âdo you see these shoes? jimmy choo.â although inebriated and not that much in control of her emotions, the teen still manages a smug smile to be directed towards suhee. she half-laughs, rolling her dark hues slowly, an effort to prevent dizziness.
this way she could a little more freely and still not be heard. ânow before i say what i say, remember to smile and laugh. we canât have you exposing yourself anymore.â it was a sly jab but she could not bring herself to care. âwhy would i apologize to you? you used every second you could to tear into me, to hurt me. why would i, bae hwarin apologize to a little girl who acts like a brat? you have a very pretty face and -â her voice dropped to almost a whisper. â and a very shitty personality. you want me to say sorry to you but you canât fix your lips to say it to me? youâre hilarious, your face might get you far but just like in that place, youâll slip up again. work on yourself before you ask for an apology okay?â she ended with a huge smile, something the fans would be able see even with her head turned away. âyouâve poked a sleeping bear enough.â
hwarinâs new personality was shocking to the younger girl, truly. of course, hyejin didnât like it.
what had happened to the shy, passive girl from msg? what happened to the trainee that hyejin found no problem in freely pushing around? standing beside her now was someone else completely, someone stronger, more confident. a part of hyejin felt sad; she had really enjoyed doing what she did to hwarin, it was the highlight of her week and gave her the boost of confidence when she needed boosting. it was almost as if it was an end of an era for hyejin and she could safely say that she was going to miss it, as well as was going to miss the old hwarin--- in fact, based on the previous interactions the two had shared, hyejin didnât think she was ever going to talk to hwarin again.
underneath her closed, smiling lips, hyejin gritted her pearly white teeth, angered as hwarin continued to speak. her frustration grew with every word that left the older girlâs mouth, and the teen found it difficult to not let her bright smile falter. she forces another giggle, this time a softer laugh: her eyes squint and wrinkles form around them, her cheekbones raise as her ruby lips spread wide, and out from lips comes a giggle barely audible.
as the otherâs arms wrapped around her, hyejin attempted to keep her position and smile and not cringe away, a very difficult thing for her to do. through her opened and smiling mouth, the girl proceeds to continue the conversation. the fury is evident in her hushed voice. âyou really are a bitch, hwarin.â
thereâs a pause as she poses for a calling cameraman. when she continues, however, the rage in her tone is elevated to a different level. âif you want me to apologize, then fine. iâm sorry that i wanted to help you get better on the show. iâm sorry that you canât fucking handle any sort of constructive criticism and are so fucking sensitive about every single thing. but iâm just going to say one more thing to help you because yeah, iâm not a âshitty personâ --- after all, iâve given up my time to actually give you advice in the past so fuck you.â
hyejin pauses once more, forcing another fake laugh, although this time the giggle actually appeared to be conjured up. but she didnât care, the teen was pressed. âmy advice is, if youâll take it, that the real world is full of people like me --- tough but still trying to offer help. i suggest you grow up and not be a pissy baby and learn to take the advice rather than crying into your pillow or complaining because it was âhurting youâ.â

the only upside had been that the fans were placed fair enough way that could at least whisper and not be heard. she was sure she could control herself but hwarin felt there was a chance something less than friendly would slip out. and when she was finally just a few inches away from hyejin her face turned into a kind of awkward smile. the staff backed away to give them space and she for a few seconds she was at a lost of what to do. but hwarin was quick and she looped her arm with the other and did a v sign pose. âjust follow along, the faster you move the quicker this will be over.â she muttered it but kept the smile on her lips. at this point she had to trust that hyejin wouldnât act as she normally would. the girl wasnât that stupid.
these fanmeets were so far turning out to not be as fun as hyejin had hoped theyâd be. it didnât have anything to do with the fans --- she absolutely loved them and enjoyed all the love and attention she received. instead, it had everything to do with the people surrounding her, her fellow contestants and rivals who she was forced to be affectionate towards and have fun with. it was pure torture for hyejin, a girl who had a sum total of four genuine friends on the show ( the rest she either hated or hated her ).Â
it was only icing on the cake when bae hwarin and her were paired up for a lengthy portion of the meet.
did hyejin regret being so forward and mean to hwarin on the show? absolutely not. but what she did feel upset about, was that she had forgotten where they were. they had been in the produce dormâs kitchen, there mustâve been some hidden camera somewhere. blinded by her own ego, hyejin had let the facade she carried slip and had risked the public figuring out that she wasnât as âamiableâ as she seemed. hopefully, the producers in charge would be kind to her and not let any of it air.
a smile is forced onto ruby lips as she looked towards hwarin, who shockingly took charge of the situation and told her what to do. trying to mask her surprise at the older girlâs sudden commands, hyejin suddenly bursts into a small giggling fit, acting as though hwarin had said something funny. she leans her body in sideways so that the two girls were close enough to be touching shoulders. cringing internally at the affection and skin ship they had to put on, hyejin resisted the urge to scowl and instead continued to allow a bright, pleasant smile to embrace her features.
out of the corner of her grinning mouth, however, comes an icy side-comment, addressing what went down between them the last time they interacted. in hyejinâs eyes, the older trainee was in the wrong, not her. âi expect youâre going to give me an apology --- after what happened in the kitchen, of course.â
sweat glistens on the bare skin of hyejinâs forehead, her tall body feeling rather exhausted due to both the searing climate of los angeles and also the fact the contestants were forced to wear uncomfortable -- layered -- school girl outfits. although it is technically still morning, the trainee is already aching as she practices, obviously tired from the overwhelming feeling of jet lag that had begun to wash over her. and on top of all of this, hyejin is crazy nervous about the upcoming performance.
while the stadium was currently empty where they were rehearsing, she can tell just how many people would be gathered in there later. it was nerve wracking, even for a girl as self-confident as hyejin. although there were other many other trainees beside her for the performance, it was still her first live in front of such a large crowd of people. of course, she had the amazing experience of backup dancing for 99â˛s pan-asian tour earlier in the year --- but that was different. this time, she was one of those in spotlight and in a much larger venue. without a doubt, nerves were rushing through her all morning, from head to toe.
walking downstage and towards the back to cool herself down, hyejin grabs a water bottle on the way and begins to gulp it down, making sure to keep herself hydrated. however, after only a few seconds, she pauses. although the backstage area was large enough to fit a vast crowd of people, the teenager amazingly spots the one person that would make anything in the world feel better -- even this anxious and exhausted morning. a large feeling of joy shoots through hyejin and she feels a smile grow eagerly atop her lips.
âah, sooyeon! you came!âÂ
the sight of her older cousin is almost like a breath of fresh air for her and relief fills hyejin up to the brim. the trainee hurries over to hug the idol, a wide smile pushing up her cheeks. the teen couldnât fathom how much she loved her cousin, truly. the two were practically sisters, having spent most of their lives knowing one another and acting as each otherâs main support system. not to mention, while some tended to bash hyejin for her âsnake-likeâ or âsnobbishâ tendencies, sooyeon would always understand her completely -- most of the time even taking part in hyejinâs shenanigans alongside her. the younger girl would give or do anything for the idol, and that says a lot coming from a girl whoâs probably one of the absolute least selfless people in existence.
âsooo,â hyejin reluctantly pulls away from her cousin, a smirk already formed on her ruby lips. âhow am i doing so far?â
heart racing, palms sweaty, a dry mouth. itâs time, the day for the live performance was finally here. as the muffled sound of a live audience cheering in the background filled her ears, hyejin could feel her nerves escalating with each passing moment that they waited. no, she shouldnât be nervous. she practiced well and was going to perform well. sheâll do her best, they all will.
after long, restless minutes of waiting, the four girls were finally led from the backstage area onto the dark center stage by the showâs crew. here goes nothing.
while mirror mirror hadnât been her first choice in the first round of live performances, compared to, say, into the new world, the song actually ended up growing onto her after the many days of practicing it. she worked hard in the days leading up to judgement day, making sure that everything was top-notch perfect and that she was going to perform to the best of her abilities.
itâs ironic that hyejin got chosen for a song such as this one, where the lyrics tell of someone asking a mirror about who the prettiest was, before then swiftly instructing the inanimate object to tell them that they were the prettiest. a lyric literally sings, âmirror, mirror, who is the most beautiful in the world? itâs me.â. there couldnât be any other song in the competition that would better suit a vainglorious girl like hyejin; this meant that the teen would have no problem getting into the âmoodâ of the song--- she could easily relate to it, much to her benefit.
heart racing, hyejin stands on the dark stage in front of the screaming audience, waiting for the lights to finally turn on and anticipating hearing that familiar beat which would signify the beginning of the song. another minute, then it all began. the recognizable beat, the sound of eunjuâs voice, and then finally, hyejinâs in the center of the formation, licking up the spotlight.
why didnât you even look at me, when you made me gaze at only you every day?
her ruby lips parted, she starts off the song with her small line in the first verse, and, thankfully, she has absolutely no trouble executing it. after practicing diligently with myungeun for hours, hyejinâs improved greatly from her pick me evaluation. her singing is finally as confident and stable as she would like it, especially as she dances to her full potential. although the choreography isnât tricky, her movements still remain strong, yet appear to flow naturally from her. the dance training sheâs had for most of her life is evident so far in this performance, after all itâs the skill she takes the most pride in, the skill that got her where she is today.
hyejinâs charisma is apparent as she dances just as she had practiced. her eyes -- having sought it out as soon as she entered the stage -- refusing to leave the camera that was on her, giving it a charismatic stare that fits the strong concept of the song. occasionally, thereâs a lip bite or two, or even a hair flip, as hyejin works to sell the concept. throughout it all, she exudes confidence and charisma.
the chorus comes along smoothly for her, again, done just as they had all practiced together. her moves continue to be clear and full of energy, precise at best. she sings the rest of her lines with as much strength and personality as she had sung with her first line, making sure that she gives it her all.
as the song ends, hyejin stands with a heaving chest in the formation, face glowing with a thin layer of moistness; however, an attractive, ending look is still apparent for the benefit of the watching cameras. once theyâre given the signal and allowed to move, hyejin bows and waves to the audience who were screaming for them, some holding small banners that had their names printed and displayed. without having to look hard for it, hyejin ends up spotting her own name amidst the crowd on a red banner and she canât help but let a bright, happy beam embrace her features. she has fans, sheâs on stage, people are cheering for her.
itâs what hyejinâs always wanted and she loves it --- oh, she canât wait to get more.

( + produce project ep. two : hyejinâs thoughts on pick me )
she hates the song. she absolutely hates it.
as soon as the producers had played the track for the contestants, hyejin knew this song was going to be a headache to learn. not because the dance was hard or anything -- in fact, the dance actually looked quite fun to her -- but because the song, itself, was an annoying version of the current trending concept for korean girl groups: repetitive lines, a catchy tune, a random beat drop, and a charming, school-girl look. while the audience might love it, joo hyejin dislikes it with a passion.
it would be an easy enough dance to perform, hyejin had realized as she sat in the practice room by herself, although the room was filled with other trainees doing their own thing. in her head, she had played back the steps that were instructed to the produce girls as a whole, figuring out that sheâs memorized it all and would require no help from any of the other trainees. good, she did better on her own anyways.
throughout her practice alone, hyejin recognized how much breath the songâs dance had taken out of her. she wondered how sheâll ever manage to sing while dancing her full potential to this, as she was supposed to for the evaluation. itâs a problem, for she had desired the centerâs position and had tried her best to work for that position. however, she ended up not doing as great as she had hoped -- due to the strenuous vocal activity, hyejin had danced softer to allow herself more breath available for stable singing --- it hardly did any harm, as her moves still flowed along nicely. her singing, on the other hand, lacked what the coaches deemed âcenter-worthinessâ. weaker than she would have liked, her vocal skills in the evaluation strongly contrasted her dance skills, costing her the centerâs position.
already unhappy about not doing her best in the evaluation, it really was icing on the cake when it was revealed that song suran took the center position. hyejin had been furious-- in her eyes, the idol didnât deserve it, she honestly didnât deserve to be on the show. but really she had to be there. she had to be the nuisance for hyejin, the motivation for hyejin to work a little harder than her hardest, and also, in truth, the one person that she was the most jealous of on the show.
during the filming for the song, hyejin manages to do better than in her evaluations as -- although they were supposed to -- she didnât sing quite as strongly as she shouldâve, leaving her dancing to be as excellent as it could possibly be and her stage presence to be very charismatic and fitting to the youthful concept. she delivers delightful winks, endless smiles, and boundless energy to the camera filming her, knowing that at least one of these moments would be edited into the actual video so that, thankfully, the audience can finally see her charisma.Â
with hyejinâs satisfaction, the pick me era of the show ends swiftly; however, the pick me song lives on for the rest of the show inside hyejinâs head. meaning that every now and then, it manages to get stuck in there for hours on end, angering the trainee and simply proving just how annoying the song really is.
âright? one time i stayed up all night with some of my foreigner friends to try and catch tickets for this convention overseas but the seller literally sold out right as we were all checking out - i was fully dead on my feet the next day - ticketless.â she muses, a faraway look settling over her features. âi really only wanted to go because i thought this one actress i like would be there but she wasnât so, whatever. anyway - â she refocuses, clapping once before standing up. âall-nighter. try to meet me here around, like, eight, if you can? i always try to get started a little earlier each time so i donât quite hit six am.â
as the date to the live performance comes closer and closer, itâs true hyejinâs been getting a little nervous, but only a little. like always, she was confident in her abilities and performance --- sheâd do well, and she knew the rest of her group would do just as well. although myungeun was the only one out of the three whom she actually liked, she couldnât deny the talents of the others. theyâd do fantastic in the song, as well as make a lasting impression on the viewers. she could put up with her group-mates if it meant a successful song, especially since theyâre time working together was ending soon; she hopefully wouldnât have to interact with suran for the rest of the show, and eunju --- well, she didnât know if the other really thought they were friends. if she did, then hyejin had to wait till the very end of the show to cut the girl off entirely.
as the other began to ramble, hyejin began to groan inside her mind --- when was this little interaction between them going to be over. the trainee wanted to leave, after all, she was starting to get more and more annoyed every time eunju opened her mouth. but she puts on a face, acting astonished at the story eunju tells. her mouth opens wide with a gasp, but swiftly closes as she forms a pout in âpityâ for the older girl. âaww, that mustâve sucked!â half-laughing at the otherâs sudden change in topic, hyejin begins to feign enthusiasm for the upcoming night. âof course! eight then it is!â
screaming internally at herself for getting into something like this, hyejin struggled to maintain the smile on her features. sure an hour of practice with a girl like eunju was bearable, but a whole fucking night? sheâd be driven crazy, sheâd snap, she didnât know what she would do. all hyejin could do was hope for the best; hopefully, she didnât end up yelling at eunju, or in a worse-case scenario, end up strangling her. oh well, whatever happens, happens. the teen claps her hands together once, squealing excitedly.
âplease, be my baby!â she laughs, singing her parts in a decidedly cuter voice, giggling right after she sings the line. âyou really think so? i mean, wonder girls have some big shoes to fill, and this song is iconic so if i mess up iâll really mess up.â sometimes she thinks about what she would do without hyejin. die, probably, though that might be an exaggeration but her life definitely wouldnât be the same. âbut thanks. letâs do well together.â she takes her friendâs hand, shaking it slightly. âletâs debut together, just this once, okay? because we wonât get another opportunity.â
hyejinâs soft when it comes to han jiae.Â
while some others in her life knew only of her harsh and domineering attitude, she tended to always immediately let go of that rough, manipulative exterior with jiae. sheâs genuine, all authentic, all real with her closest friend. hyejin could never fake anything in front of the older girl; she cared too deeply for her, anyways. and to be honest, the teen would do anything for the other girl as well. a loud laugh suddenly comes forth from her parted lips in reaction to the otherâs tiny vocal performance. enthusiastically, her hands clap together in a playful manner. âoh my gosh, it sounds super good!â
allowing herself to calm down from her playfulness, hyejin lets a reassuring smile cover her glowing features, dark hues filling once again with a sense of warmth. âjiae, donât worry, youâll do the wonder girls justice.â her tone is gentle, yet firm. sheâs confident in her best friend, knowing that the blonde trainee will do her absolute best in the upcoming live--- sheâs one of the most talented trainees on the show, after all. the teen makes sure to show this faith on her face with an expression of confidence, hoping it will boost up the otherâs esteem leading up to the live performance. âyouâll be shining compared to the other girls up there with you. i know it.âÂ
her smile falters at the otherâs words, feeling pressure suddenly. although it wasnât jiaeâs intention, hyejin began to feel anxious toward the upcoming episodes. her ranking had been shit so far on the show, and she couldnât afford that again, especially if she wanted to win. as she feels the other grab her hand, however, warmth begins to surge through hyejin, soothing the tension within her. a smile washes over her seriousness, and she nods her head. âi agree, letâs do well. letâs get there, letâs debut together on this show.â
if only they shared the same contract under the same company. itâs one of the biggest disappointments in her young life so far --- she wanted desperately to debut with her best friend, but due to the facts, she couldnât. hyejin understands it to that extent, but she also understands that on this show, she has the rare opportunity to get a sense of debuted life with jiae. she couldnât waste it. hyejin wanted to debut on the showâs final group for a various number reasons, and jiae was one of them. she couldnât mess it up, she had to win. although she didnât do too hot last round, she knew she had to work even harder. she couldnât lose, she didnât want to -- her emotions would be all over the place if she werenât able to be in at least a temporary group with jiae. thereâs a sigh that she emits, and she leans forward to embrace the other once again.
âthereâs not a person iâd rather have by my side than you.â
âjoo hyejin.â her voice was firm even if it was a little quiet. âi donât know why you act the way you do but please leave me alone tonight. iâm tired and iâm already under a lot of stress. if i say whatâs running through my mind right now. youâll be the person walking away with hurt feelings.â maybe this would leave hyejin to backing off, hwarin didnât want to become an ugly person. âi do not want to come off as a hateful person like you. so please, letâs keep our distance unless we have to work together eh?â by now she dropped the honorifics in her voice, hyejin hadnât been worthy of them and hwarin needed to show the younger girl just want she was -older.Â
taken aback by the otherâs sudden boldness, hyejin feels both shocked and offended. where is this suddenly coming from? itâs scary, to be honest. the cowardice of the younger girl suddenly feels like backing away, believing the threats the other posed werenât as empty as they usually seemed. the trainee gulps, giving herself a little shake to recover the callous look she was giving before hwarin had opened her lips. anger suddenly makes itâs way into hyejin surging through her veins. how dare she? hyejinâs feelings rarely ever got hurt -- to the point where it could be thought that she couldnât feel anything --, her ego large enough to be a shield over her pride. however, sheâs still speechless at hwarinâs words, the tone she puts forth causing hyejin to hesitate. after a minute, the trainee fully regains her domineering posture and scoffs at the other. she rolls her dark hues, proceeding to get up quickly from her seat--- a decision to back away has been made, she wouldât waste her energy here. âfine, whatever. donât take my help. iâm done with my food anyway.â
hyejin moves to throw out the rest of the bits of food in her bowl, the escalating anger in her due to the otherâs frankness taking over any thoughts of pervious hunger. placing her empty dish in the sink for some other trainee to clean up, the teen then starts for her bag hanging on the back of the chair she had been seated at. she begins to speak as she moves, annoyance clearly heard in her usually honeyed voice. âkeep studying, i donât care.âÂ
once she collects her bag, she begins to make her way out of the kitchen, but before she reaches the exit, she halts and swings herself around, huffing in exasperation. her anger is at itâs tipping point and hyejin felt as if she was about to explode at any minute. a menacing glare is thrown at hwarin as cold words continue to spill out of her ruby lips. âbut just so you know, you have the potential to do so much better if you just let go of your fucking pride and listen to me. itâs your downfall, not mine.âÂ
itâs funny, just how hypocritical she is.
suddenly her sour expression suddenly morphs into a sickly sweet smile, her head tilting to one side and a hand raising to wave a âgoodbyeâ. her voice takes on a high-pitched, cutesy voice and she blows a little kiss towards hwarin with her waving hand. itâs an act - a rather annoying one - to show hwarin just how fake she could be and to potentially, hopefully, irk her.
âokay, iâll be off now! ciao, hwarin-unnie!â
âiâll debut with jaehyun and daesung, you know them? the old men.â he laughs a bit. in some sense it makes things easier, debuting with guys he knows for so long, who he has some sort of understanding with. ânow youâll be able to say you know me before i was famous and successful and tell all my childhood stories on pann.â aroon jokes with her, bumps his shoulder with hyejinâs. the light atmosphere seems so weird, but he enjoys it.
âof course! i know you deserve it, seriously! iâm happy for you -- jealous, but still happy.â aroon was practically a sibling to her, a relationship built on the foundation that involved them to share a piece of their childhood with one another. unlike many, hyejin cared immensely for aroon, and a proud feeling of happiness comes easily to her for his success. while she fiercely dreamed of debuting herself one day, she couldnât overlook the fact that the male beside her, someone whom she loved, someone whoâd trained twice her training time, was finally debuting himself.Â
hyejin was a âpick-and-chooseâ type of person. there were some people who sheâd be supporting and making sure that she gave them as much love as possible, while, on the other hand, there were others who she would be driving into the ground with harsh words and her judging, cold eyes. of course, there were others she hardly cared to waste time and energy either loving or hating, so instead, they fit into the group of people hyejin acted entirely fake towards, manipulating them to believe she wasnât as narcissistic of a person as she truly was. most people fit into that category.
âaw, thatâs so sweet. i hope my mom does the same thing.â she half-laughs, picturing how she remembered aroonâs mom to look like, imagining her in proud tears for her son --- a pleased smile ends up staying on hyejinâs glossy lips. as the other continues to speak, hyejin listens intently and takes the last few bites of the fruit in front of her, wiping her moist fingers with a napkin. she then widens her dark orbs again at the revealing of his groupmates, admiration swelling inside. âoh yeah, iâve seen them on the show. wow, you guys have quite the lineup.âÂ
âno doubt, you all are going to be making knees weak with your debut.â another laugh, and hyejin hydrates with the water bottle in front of her again. a smirk appears as soon as she finishes and she canât help but laugh loudly once again. nodding rapidly, mischief appears in the girlâs eyes. âdefinitely. iâm going to expose absolutely everything, and iâm also going to call your mom and get the old, embarrassing pictures too.âÂ
âalthough, i think i have one on my phone from when i gave you a makeover and you ended up looking like a little princess-cutie. the world has definitely got to see that one.â

then he laughs, shaking his head. âi should keep an eye on you whether we debut together or not,â because hyejin has quite the personality, something he would say itâs an acquired taste. âand no way, i just let you think that.â he tells her, laughing. truth be told, child hyejin kicked his ass every time they hung out together. he was never capable of telling her no, and aroon thinks that is just part of hyejinâs charm, or something that one day would ruin someone. âbut yeah, i would like to spend more time with you, but i have so many schedules right now.â he sighs, trying not to think about it.Â
âi donât know if you heard it, but iâm going to debut on midas next group.â itâs still strange to say that, his mind is still trying to process the fact that he soon he wonât be aroon banthao, the trainee, but aroon banthao, the titanium member. âyouâll be able to say you knew before i was famous.â aroon jokes, still laughing.
âyeah, youâre right. kids like us are meant for the top.â they reassure hyejin, aroonâs words, and she gives a brief smile and a small shrug. she isnât certain about the future, she didnât really know what to do. but he was right. âthe cream always rises to the topâ --- she liked that, she liked it a lot. hyejin gives a half-laugh, smiling. âweâll always rise.â
she had to. all her life hyejinâs been obsessed with the spotlight, the idea of stardom and being number one. all eyes and hearts on her was what she craved. itâs always been that way, always. even as soon as she had exited her motherâs womb, her cry was so loud and deafening that all throughout the hospital corridors, people could still hear her. she had wanted attention from the very beginning, in fact, she had demanded it.Â
and since then, sheâs decided to do anything to get it.
cue the multiple years of her backstabbing, manipulating, lying, faking, tormenting--- all to just get something she wanted, whether it be the title of a âpageant queenâ or even a better image for her coaches and trainers, the people who decided her future at the company. hyejin did what she had to do and she was glad she did half the things she did, remorse absent from her heart. her ambition knew no limits and she didnât mind.
pondering on her thoughts, she almost misses what the male says, realization coming only after a solid half-minute. sipping on her water, hyejin almost chokes once she hears the news for the first time.Â
coughing loudly with a hand to her chest due to the water - attracting the attention of those nearby - she finally manages to calm herself down and begins to whisper-yell at her childhood friend, eyes wide with surprise. âholy shit, are you serious?!â once again, hyejinâs arms are around aroon, another tight hug delivered to the older contestant. âi didnât know! oh my gosh, congratulations aroon!â after a sweet moment, she pulls away with a large grin on her lips, unable to make it stop. joy is felt in her heart, pure joy--- she feels like a proud sister. âiâm honestly so happy for you, so, so happy and proud!â
