Lockdown life be like stress triggering IBS more but toilet always available so 🎉
i just came across your blog, and i had a question. i was diagnosed recently with ibs because my doc cant find anything else it could be. ive had a lot of tests and they always come back normal. the only symptom i have is really bad abdominal pain. no diarrhea or constipation or gas or anything like that, just horrible pain. does that sound like ibs? because everyone else i come across seem to have really painful bathroom habits, but i dont. just bad pain all the time. thoughts?
What kind of tests have you had? I’ve noticed sometimes it’s what they try to stamp on you because they’re out of ideas. e.g. I recently learnt a friend who was diagnosed with IBS actually had endometriosis but they didn’t consider testing for that. Can you ask for more tests? Or a second opinion? Definitely keep trying!
I'm SO glad I found this blog! I've been struggling with IBS for all my little life, and it's been the absolute worst during this semester that started only a few weeks ago. I struggle with Asperger's (to which IBS is linked and vice versa) and depression and all, and have been super unable to go to school on most days. No supplements work, my diet is super restricted already, and I am very stressed because of my IBS and also because of school... I am super anxious about my education :/ (pt 1)
Hi Anon!
Adding all 4 parts to this so everyone can see! I’m so sorry you’re going through this alone. I think your first step is to go see a doctor. I’ve never had any kind of -scopy so don’t think that you’ll need to do one but I do know people who have had to do one. Things I’ve had are blood tests such as allergy tests and coeliacs, stool tests for parasites, and MRIs so -scopy’s won’t be their first option!
You really want to rule everything else out first because IBS symptoms are basically what they diagnose you with when they’ve tried everything else and found nothing. If you’re female, it might be worth asking about endometriosis which can also give the same symptoms (if you also have really bad period pain).
On anxiety, I would try to work on anything to help you. Meditation, yoga, breathing techniques. My IBS is triggered by high anxiety so when I keep myself relaxed it helps. Any big events I know what to expect and am ready to run 🏃♀️ 😂😂
The bottom line is that you’re not lazy and you’re struggling with a lot right now but your school isn’t going to see it unless you have seen a doctor. Trust me- I had a situation at university with a group project where my group got really angry at me as sometimes I would miss meetings but since I had all the tests the doctor was able to give me a letter that I could give to my teacher so that I wouldn’t be penalised for it. Speak to your family and tell them something is wrong! Can you go to a doctor without them knowing?
I hope things get better and keep us updated!! Good luck 💕
Something that’s really helped me recently is working on my body. I’ve been going to some aerial yoga classes - something I wouldn’t dream of doing before because of the fear my IBS would make me unable to do things. But the more I work on it, the better I feel. My symptoms are still bad - it’s not a cure - but it foes make me less stressed and less focused on feeling shit. It’s been super cool seeing the progress I’ve made too! I can actually hang upside down 😱 if you’re feeling down about your IBS, try doing something for yourself that makes you feel better and makes you feel stronger! You can still do anything and live your life! 💪

I’ve been dealing with IBS for 12 years now (I’m 25) and oh my god your blog is a life saver. I’ve felt so alone in this. Rn I have a long car trip coming up and I’ve been super anxiously obsessing over it but finding this blog made me feel less helpless
Aw, thank you! I’m glad I’ve been able to help. Car journeys are the absolute worst! I will often not eat or drink when doing long car journeys to avoid needing to stop. Good luck with your journey and hope you make it painlessly :)
I’m trying to figure out if I have IBS or not (I’m chronically ill in other ways, btw, and am going to the GI at some point for suspected gastroparesis) but how would I be able tell if it’s actually IBS or just the average amount of constipation and diarrhea?
I would really go to your doctor to discuss your symptoms. It’s hard to say when it’s normal or when it’s becoming a problem, but obviously if it is taking over your life and making you unable to do things that you could otherwise do, then it’s worth looking into. If you’ve got other chronic illnesses, IBS may also be a symptom of that. Good luck and I hope you find what’s going on!

Anxiety-induced IBS, i panic severely for a while before needing to relieve myself somehow after eating certain things -- tell me more aboit this please.
Everything in our bodies are linked. Stress causes all your muscles to tense up which can make you need to go to the bathroom more. I remember the first time I had a panic attack and realised I needed the bathroom. I was on a bus and just couldn’t stop shaking suddenly. Somehow managed to waddle myself off and home saving a lot of embarrassment but it came absolutely out of nowhere. I often also get it right after or before an extremely stressful event, and when I’m a lot less stressed I often find my IBS is in a much better (but not perfect) condition. I’m not sure if this helps, but you’re not alone!

So I think I have IBS but I haven’t been officially diagnosed, I just know t runs in my family and I show a lot of the symptoms but I was curious if you’ve ever heard of water causing flare ups? I’ve noticed if I drink too much water it’ll upset my stomach and cause cramps along with diarrhea.
Water can definitely flare up IBS. It contributes to bloat. If I drink a lot of water while eating, I always baloon in size. Water is obviously great but it’s what time you have it too :)
Had anyone tried CBD for IBS? I’m thinking about trying it and wondered if anyone had any success with it.
I have not tried it, opening this one up for anyone else to reply.
Has anyone tried a grain free diet to help reduce ibs symptoms? If so,has it worked?
I think it really depends on the person.. I’ve tried so many elimination diets but none of them have worked for me. I have heard they work for others though.
