(I got two asks for this fine I’ll do it, even if it’s late as heck)

    “About you?”  He considers a moment, then scoffs.  “I am a scientist, not a poet.  I doubt I have the words to do it justice.  Our relationship is of mutual benefit, though I will admit that our dynamic has changed over the years.  We are different people with different needs and we drift at times, but we always come back to each other.  Something stable.”

     In our specific ‘verse… Naruto is another student, another oddity, but Orochimaru gives more personal attention to Naruto because he knows he needs it.  It’s little things, ninja training, teaching him about the world, basically making sure that Naruto knows how to survive on his own.

Orochimaru is a busy snake with lots of things to do and prepare for.  Naruto certainly gets attention, but a large majority of the time he’d be left to his own devices in the somewhat structured environment that Oto kids live in.

While I do not think Orochimaru thinks of their relationship as anything but teacher and student, I certainly imagine Orochimaru reacting with a lot more urgency to Naruto being in some sort of peril than he would for literally any of the other Oto kids.  He gets attached in his own way.  I think at first other Oto kids would be jealous, but then they’d realize that having Naruto around makes Orochimaru come by more often and do things like eat lunch with them all and they’d all end up fiercely protective.

   This one sneaks up on him; Orochimaru is so distracted by Kohaku that his protege is able to come up behind him and slide yet another flower into his hair.  Orochimaru will never admit it, but there’s actually a moment where he doesn’t expect the feeling of another flower going into his hair and he startles.  There’s no outward sign of it, but it happened.

Honestly?  Good.

   He bows his head to receive this one as she approaches.  There is clearly a pattern here, and far be it from him to disrupt it.  He’ll allow this collective act of appreciation.  A third flower ends up in his hair, joining the others.

       And then another flower is added to his hair.  He pauses at this one, too.  Occasionally, Orochimaru wonders if he messed certain things up with individuals when it wasn’t necessary, people who weren’t entirely beneath his gaze.  Kabuto had always been a person of worth to him.
