art for for want of neutrality
It was 1419, sixteen years had passed since the Siege of Suchdol, and Bohemia sat on a knifeâs edge.
When friend and foe stood on both sides of a battlefield, there was no such thing as neutrality in war.
Or the one where Hanush had been right. Hansâ importance had only grown over the years. The only issue was that sometimes he felt he was not enough of a man to fill his own shoes.

I need everyone to know that the ship GĂśtheborg, the world's largest ocean-going wooden sailing ship, answered a distress call the other day.
Imagine waiting for the coast guard or whatever to show up and instead a replica of 18th century merchant ship pulls up and tows you to the coast.
pov: youâve been transported to the 17th century
#in the article it says that the sailboat sailors were concerned because they could not be towed quickly because of the kind of boat#so they asked GĂśtheborg what type of ship they were and warned that they would not be able to go above a certain speed#and gĂśtheborg went ' we are also a sailboat. 50 meters length. no worries :) '#and the poor sailboat sailors were just like ' That's not possible. they have to be messing with us' and then the ship Rolled Up (via bunjywunjy)
I'm crying. Here's a photo of a sailor from the GĂśtheborg watching over the little sailboat in tow:
From the story:
We repeatedly emphasized that we were aboard a small 8-meter sailboat, but the response was the same each time: "We are a 50-meter three-masted sailboat, and we offer our assistance in towing you to Paimpol." We were perplexed by the size difference between our two boats, as we feared being towed by a boat that was too large and at too fast a speed that could damage our boat. The arrival of the GĂśtheborg on the scene was rapid and surprising, as we did not expect to see a merchant ship from the East India Company of the XVIII century. This moment was very strange, and we wondered if we were dreaming. Where were we? What time period was it? The GĂśtheborg approached very close to us to throw the line and pass a large rope. The mooring went well, and our destinies were linked for very long hours, during which we shared the same radio frequency to communicate with each other. The crew of the GĂśtheborg showed great professionalism and kindness towards us. They adapted their speed to the size of our boat and the weather conditions. We felt accompanied by very professional sailors. Every hour, the officer on duty of the GĂśtheborg called us to ensure everything was going well.[...] This adventure, very real, was an incredible experience for us. We were extremely lucky to cross paths with the GĂśtheborg by chance and especially to meet such a caring crew. Dear commander and crew of the GĂśtheborg, your kindness, and generosity have shown that your ship is much more than just a boat. It embodies the noblest values of the sea, and we are honored to have had the chance to cross your path and benefit from your help.
"Our destinies were linked for very long hours" is just knocking me out.
some of you need to make your bed and have a shower with a soap that smells nice, and then sit in a chair near the window and have tea with milk and read a hardcover book and see how your creative block is after that tbh.
i'm not saying creative block isn't a real or difficult phenomenon. i'm saying creatives have a tendency to neglect themselves physically and emotionally in favor of manic bursts of productivity. a little softness and clean sheets and a bagel will go a long way. make a playlist and light the fancy candle you've been saving for a special occasion. life is a special occasion.
Always a good reminder.
when you die, all the processes in your body slow down and come to a halt before starting to decay. which means if you were to revive someone from the dead, necromancer-style, you'd potentially have to kickstart their entire system back up from a state of inertia. which means it almost certainly would not be pretty. i'm talking coughing up clots of blood, nauseatingly intense migraines and muscle cramps, and all the sensory overload that would come with firing up the body's engines from frozen cold to fully functioning all guns blazing in the matter of seconds it takes to cast a resurrection spell.
basically: 'resurrection hangovers' should totally be a thing

A thing that bothers me about wizard schools in popular media â outside of the magic-grade-school stuff, anyway â is that they're typically depicted as being basically magic universities, but their actual curricula and pedagogical approaches look much more like those of a technical institution. Like, buddy, that's not a wizard university, that's a wizard trade school. You can't just slap university student culture on top of trade school pedagogy. It doesn't work like that â the one emerges from the other!
"Well ACTUALLY wizards are" wizards are made up. They can be analogous to whatever real-world class or vocation the author wants. Wizard-school-as-university and wizard-school-as-technical-institute are both perfectly fine; what I am grumping about is wizard-school media that doesn't seem to have a clear picture of how different sorts of educational institutions actually operate.
Okay but now I really want to know what a Wizard technician would look like. Would he wear magical overalls with all kinds of reagents and magic tools sticking out of his numerous pockets?
A guy like that walks into your tower with a toothpick in his mouth, takes one look at your summoning circle and goes
âI see yer problem. You used chalk B12 instead of S3. B12 is only for transmutation circles. Gimme a sec I think I have a piece somewhere here.â
He fixes your circle, test summons an imp and goes.
âThere ya go. Fit as a fiddle.â
âItâs the chalk.â
âThe chalk? I always use that chalk, itâs never been a problem.â
âAh - yes. This stuff will work just fine for most circles, but, uh - here, take a look with my loupe. You see the off-color flecks? Canât hardly see them with the naked eye, but those are impurities. Silicates, might even be some iron in here, to be honest. Usually wonât cause a problem, but - you said you hadnât tried this particular summons before?â
âFirst time trying a 5th level, yeah.â
âThose silicates will make your scribing a little fuzzy when viewed from the astral plane. You see, for example, these three fine lines here? With this chalk, on the astral that looks like one thick line with fuzzy edges. They canât tell exactly what you want, and theyâre picky lilâ critters so they just wonât do anything in response.â
âReally? Oh. I always thought the expensive chalk was just fancy to be fancy.â
âMaking pure chalk is difficult, you need a dedicated production line or dust gets in the finished product. To be honest, you donât need to bother with it for most things, but 5th and up, 5th level and up, it actually is necessary. Anything with lines within about two millimeters of each other.â
âSo I need to start over?â
âUnfortunately yes. Youâll have to erase all this, but with some good chalk it should work just fine. Next new moon your summons should go off without a hitch.â
âDang. At least itâs not my sigils, I was worried it was my sigils.â
âNah Your sigils look good. Even and balanced. You know what youâre doing, itâs just an equipment problem.â
âThanks for the help, sorry to make you come all the way out here.â
âNo problem! Itâs my job.â
#scene from moonstruck with vincent gardenia explaining the different types of pipes but itâs metallurgy ores #thereâs the kind of ore you haveâ which is garbage. then thereâs steel which is pretty good. unless something goes wrong. #and something always goes wrong. #and thenâ thereâs copper. which is the only kind of ore i use. #it costs money. it costs money because it saves money. "banned"
art for The Dread Pirate, Blackbird, for the @ofmd-reverse-bang
It was amazing working with InTabernaQuandoSumus to bounce ideas for their brilliant fic, go check it out! It's tabletop DnD meets pirates, and it's just a great read all around!
So my problem with most âget to know your characterâ questioneers is that theyâre full of questions that just arenât that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)Â Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.
If Iâm doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought Iâd share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:Â
What is the characterâs go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)Â
What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)Â
Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ânormalâ for them growing up is important.)
Describe the shoes theyâre wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)
Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)
What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)Â
What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ânormalâ even look like for them.)Â

i love pitting classically trained magic users against self-taught magic users in sci-fi/fantasy but it shouldnât be snobbish disdain for them it should be terror
âWHO TAUGHT YOU LIGHTNING BEFORE BASIC TELEKINESIS. LOSING MY MIND WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU JUST DID IT. WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU CAST WITH YOUR BARE HANDSâ
WHAT DO YOU MEAN THAT YOUâVEÂ âHACKEDâ MANA DRAIN
WHAT DO YOU MEANÂ âDRINK SOME JUICEâ
WHAT ISÂ âLOW BLOOD SUGARâ
WHY IS THIS WORKING
I HATE YOU SO MUCH
Okay but other direction can ALSO be a lot of fun
âWhat do you mean I donât have to burn half my blood to create a fireball?â
âWhy can you teleport more than once without vomiting? WTF is âquantum displacement awarenessâ???â
âYou know HOW many spells? HOW? ... What do you mean âmy spell bookâ?â
âOoooh, youâre just summoning water portions from the Plane of Water... Lol I thought I HAD to combine hydrogen and oxygen molecules to generate water in small amounts. Thatâs so much easier then what I was doing!â

We need to go back to using sailing ships full time like immediately. Yes it would take longer to get places but the Aesthetic is unmatched
Like there is nothing sexier hthan this
Canât wait for OP to get scurvy
Are you under the impression that the ships themselves are what caused scurvy
Once again. Do you think this is the fault of the ships themselves
