Happy Pride Month! ๐ณ๏ธโ๐ ๐ณ๏ธโโง๏ธ
(tap for higher res)
and all that just makes me so happy for the actual show, and how it treated Korra. Korra is never put back into the relationships with men who were trying to take leadership over her. She tells her dad not to control her life anymore, and he doesn't. Korra and Tenzin's relationship is repaired in the most beautiful way - he accepts that he had to grow to guide her, and in the end, his gift to her is inspiring her to believe in herself. Korra and Mako break up, it's not a "sorry I was such a bitch to deal with, can we get back together now", it's just we were shit together and then they become friends with Mako "having her back" which was much better than anything before.
In Book 3-4, there's a much larger focus on how different women impact Korra, and there's much less of this authoritarian bs from any of them. Korra becomes friends with Asami, and she actually just listens to her instead of being a condescending shit, like literally their first scene in Book 3 is Korra just being allowed to vent to Asami. Suyin becomes another mentor that isn't speaking down to Korra when offering wisdom, and Lin becomes a protector to Korra without being overbearing. When Toph and Katara are helping Korra heal in Book 4, they are meeting Korra where she is instead of expecting her to fit into their ideas of who she should be (yes, that's also what Toph is doing in her own rough ways). With Kuvira, Korra is finally fighting a female villain around her own age, where there isn't any gross manipulative undertones.
Korra is THE AVATAR. She is the leader, and should be allowed to want that leadership. She should be upset about men holding her back.

Things I learned from rewatching Legend of Korra again:
As impulsive and stubborn as she is, Korra is usually right about most things. She is a LOT more perceptive than most people (especially viewers) give her credit for.
The first thing she says to Asami is โwell, I havenโt heard of you at allโฆโ. And it kills me that their first convo was a spite convo.
Mako doesnโt change much. I can understand why the girls ditched him. More of a decent guy than I originally thought, but honestly kind of a wet sandwich.
People tend to ignore how much Korra was embroiled in the political side of being the Avatar. Aang dealt with it too, but it was more of a โthe world needed a saviorโ thing. Korra was neck deep in what is essentially the โapproval ratingโ side of being a public figure and the fact that she had to wade through that while dealing with all of the crap she went through? She deserved a LOT more credit.
Korrasami was immediately online. It never really stopped. It was there if you knew what to look for.
Koreaโs journey was a masterclass in learning what it is to selfaffirm. Itโs VERY difficult. Often, the world is shoving you all kinds of different ways while youโre trying to assert your own identity to people. Korraโs growth into becoming who she was in Book Four was outstanding and incredibly DEEP in terms of development.
Hot take: Legend of Korra was better than The Last Airbender. At least in my opinion. And not just because of the gays.
The grey morality spectrum of Korraโs adversaries as well as their startling amount of complexity added so much character to the stories. It hurts a lot of times to be listening to character motives and understanding a degree of where theyโre coming from despite the truly heinous nature of their actions. TLA didnโt have as much of that (Ozai and Azula were pretty obviously bad).
Zukoโs growth never stopped. People thought his arc was over once TLA ended. Nah, Zuko kept learning every day.
Everyone needs a friend like Bolin.
Zaheerโs greatest punishment was watching his friends and loved ones die before him, failing in his goal, and then spending the rest of his days restrained in a cold cell deep underground with no freedom to be found. I doubt anyone will ever write a villain as good as him, but he 100% deserved everything he got and more.
Ideals define you. What actions you take to support those ideals defines you even more.
Asami is what CEOโs and technocrats should be. Never once heard her gloat about her wealth or station. Never once flaunted her money. Literally, the FIRST THING we see her do is use her money to apologize to the guy she hit on her bike, buy him a nice dinner and a nice suit, and support the team he plays on so they can live their dream. The rest of the show, she uses her position and technical knowledge to support the city, protect its welfare and population, and assist its development.
The craving for power never stopped. Kuvira is the perfect example. Kuvira was on the brink of becoming the next Fire Lord Ozai. You know she wouldnโt have stopped once she took Republic City. She would have started seizing other nationโs territories as well. War would have started all over again.
Toph told a great story. A lot of people thought having Toph turn into Chief of Police was a bad choice. Yes, it was. But not because of bad writing. Obviously, she didnโt fit there. Obviously, it wasnโt where she belonged. Look at how broken her family was. Lin and Su both struggled with their families. Toph was an abrasive human being and she knew that better than anyone. You would be too if your parents kept you locked in the house, tried to kidnap you, and disowned you just for wanting more freedom. Was she a badass? Absolutely. But having a family is hard for someone who never really had a good example of one in the first place.
Red Lotusโ audacity to think they could put down the Avatar in the Avatar state was greatly misplaced. To think that Korra practically soloed them in that cave. The only reason Zaheer got the upper hand was because of the poison he put in her and the fact that she was literally contending with her spiritual self at the same damn time. Different circumstances, Korra would have dunked on his ass. Same with Kuvira. Korra was a UNIT of an avatar and the only reason she lost to them was due to underhanded and grievously dirty tactics and trauma responses from Korraโs brain.
old favourite, took the time to revise/edit/update it for a friend and wanted to share :D

Long time no see, just gonna drop this here
Yes The gaang in Six!!! As it should. โฅ๏ธ
I'm only one episode into LOK but I think it's really fucking wild that the Order of the White Lotus raised a girl in a compound and taught her to wield herself like a weapon and then poked at her with a metaphorical stick like "why aren't you spiritual??? Go into the Avatar State for us. You should be like your predecessors."
Like yeah no wonder she gets into Extreme Bending the second she sees it all she knows is impressing the people she trusts most with her abilities as a powerful beacon, as a weapon, and it gets her paid, and friends, and that's more than she's ever gotten from the White Lotus.
And no fucking wonder Airbending is hard! No fucking wonder!! When Airbending is the element of freedom, of detachment, and she's been raised with responsibility from the age of like five. When normally Avatars are allowed childlike wonder and she only knew tests and walls. No fucking wonder it's difficult!!!!

save me woc characters who are still hated in 2024 for having emotions save me
can't believe there are still people out here in the year 2023 that genuinely think aang should have killed ozai
"even avatar yangchen saidโ" that's not the POINT, the point is that aang is the LAST airbender the LAST air nomad the LAST person following these teachings, the point is that if he breaks his vows the air nomads will truly die out with him, forever. the point is that the monks taught him all life is sacred and even if ozai is a piece of shit who everyone agrees deserves to die, aang refuses let ozai force him to give up the last thing he has of his people, their lessons, refuses to let ozai wipe the last air nomad from the earth and finish what his horrible family started. the point is that aang beats ozai because his spirit is unbendable, the point is that he takes the man whose ancestors set his on fire and robs him of the ability to hurt anyone ever again, the point is that the Fire Lord ends the fight kneeling before the Last Air Nomad and THAT is the ending aang deserved
The reason Iroh refuses to fight Ozai himself is that history would see it as another act of senseless violence, a brother killing a brother for the throne. In Aang and Iroh there's this consciousness that as the war ends, a new age will begin. The eyes of the world, the eyes of history will forever look back to this moment. When given the option, both refuse to open a new era with blood. Despite their overwhelming power, they both refuse to build a world on it, and choose to build it on mercy. And that too is the ending that Aang and the air nomads deserved.
