Kakashi attaches to Naruto because he’s like a mix of everyone he’s ever loved and lost turned into a single person. He has minatos appearance and leadership. He has his mother’s boldness and charisma. He has obito’s persistence. Rin’s kindness. His father’s loyalty.

Kakashi is reminded of them everyday in the most painful way possible because he’s sees bits of them constantly but never in their entirety and he never will again because they’re dead. So he never knows how to treat Naruto as his own person and keeps missing the things that make Naruto different. He’s just stuck in a never ending cycle of treating Naruto differently based on who he reminds Kakashi of most at that moment. He can go from cutting and mocking to awed in a heartbeat. Naruto starts leaning hard into different aspects of his personality to make Kakashi be nice to him or if he’s distant he leans into another to rile him up because at least he’d be looking at him no matter who he’s actually seeing. To everyone that sees the switch, they get major fucking de ja vu and it’s fucking disturbing.
