Synopsis: You and Heeseung are classmates at university. What happens when a simple dare finally sparks something that has been waiting to ignite for years?
“Hey, Heeseung! Can we take a picture together?” you asked as you approached his seat.
Your friends stared from your spot in the classroom, and so did Heeseung’s friends from theirs.
He looked away from Jay and looked towards me. He nodded and muttered, “Sure,” in acknowledgement. As he sat more upright in his seat, you stopped walking when you reached the side of his chair.
We took a couple of selfies, some of us making funny faces, some with peace signs and other cute hand gestures, and many were just of us smiling and looking goofy as our friends started teasing us midway through.
“I think that’s enough,” you say, looking through the pictures you had just taken with Heeseung. You smiled at him and said thank you before happily walking back to where your friends sat.
Unbeknownst to you, Heeseung stared at you as you walked away with a subtle smile on his face. As you talked to your friends about what just happened, it’s apparent that they’re only half listening when they look at each other with knowing eyes, having caught what happened seconds prior.
At the other table, Lucas slides his chair towards Heeseung and nudges him on the shoulder. “What was that about?” he asks, motioning to you by tilting his head in your direction.
Heeseung shrugs. “She wanted a picture,” Heeseung says, trying to keep his composure as nonchalant as it always is, but the way his knee bounces underneath his desk and his light fidgeting with the pen in his hand, his friends are unconvinced that it was just a picture.

As days and weeks go on, you continue to ask for pictures during break time. Your friends don’t question why you do it, and neither do they and Heeseung’s friends tease you both anymore whenever you start approaching his table.
Today, your professor decided to switch up lesson plans and bring you guys to an outdoor space just outside of your university campus. Your professor explains it was to explore more about the environment around your university, as it will need to be incorporated in an upcoming project, since the course you’re taking is Environmental Science, after all.
It’s break time, and your professor relocated your class to a garden. Same as always, you approach Heeseung’s friend group and ask if you could take a picture with Heeseung.
He notices when you start nearing and stands up to meet you halfway.
You ask the same question as always, and he agrees. You guys take the pictures, going to various locations of the garden to get different backgrounds and do other poses than you two have done the last time.
You show him the pictures you thought were cute, and as you begin to mention that you guys should head back, he beats you in speaking first.
“I want to ask you something,” he says.
You raise your brows and tilt your head in wonder, “Sure, what is it?”
From your actions, he looks away from you and clears his throat. “Why do you ask me to take pictures with you?” He looks at you again and notices the shift in your demeanor – you’re confused, and the smile on your face is slowly fading. “N-not that I don’t like it!” he stutters, his eyes wide and hands waving to assure you what you’re thinking is incorrect. “What I mean is, you have your friends, and you’re also close with some of mine. So why aren’t you also asking them to take a picture with you?” Heeseung says in clarification.
You shrug, looking towards the ground. “Dunno, I just don’t want to.”
“I just prefer when you’re the one in the frame with me,” you say quietly, only loud enough for him to hear.
Silence surrounds the both of you as you let your answer hang in the air. Your cheeks start to redden while you slowly look up to see his reaction.
Heeseung was biting the bottom of his lip, trying to suppress a smile. “Yeah?... You like me, don’t you?” His head tilted to the side in an amused, teasing manner. You scrunch your face before turning around to head back to where your friends and his are.
Flustered and embarrassed about what just happened, you let out a quiet, squeal-like sound of protest before shouting, “Forget it!” as you hurriedly make your way back.
You hear Heeseung’s amused laughter following.
“Wait!” you hear, just before he stops your hurried walk by gently grabbing onto your wrist.
By the force of being stopped suddenly from walking, you almost trip and are only able to regain your balance by spinning around and being directly face-to-face with Heeseung.
His dimpled smile is still on his face. “You didn’t answer my question.”
You shake your head, face still scrunched as you refuse to answer. Heeseung only laughs at your reaction.
“C’mon, just tell me,” Heeseung urges with the same teasing tone, but you still refuse.
Finding your reactions cute, he mutters, “Fine then,” under his breath.
You stand frozen, eyes now widening as you watch Heeseung stand a bit closer to you and bend down slightly to whisper in your ear.
“Since you won’t answer, I will.
I like you. I have for a while now, actually.” He angles his face and moves back a bit so your faces are mere inches apart.
“It’s why I agree every time you ask if we can take a picture together. I get to spend a little bit more time with you than anybody else.” He whispers the last sentence so quietly you almost miss it.
You continue to stand there frozen as you process what Heeseung just told you. Though it’s obvious how you’re taking it in – Heeseung just smiles amusedly when your face turns a brighter shade of red.
“So, can you answer my question now?” he asks, tilting your head up with his finger so you’re looking him in the eye.
You swallow hard, trying to calm your racing heart. Heeseung doesn’t rush you, he just watches how you’re reacting.
“I... like you too.
I liked you for a while now as well, but it was only recently when I was openly acting on it.
Me asking to take pictures with you started out as a dare from my friends when they figured out I liked you. They questioned why I quieted down when you were near and often spaced out when you were brought into our conversations, so I told them.
It only developed further when you went along with taking pictures with me, even spending more than half of our break period just fooling around and taking selfies with me.”

You and Heeseung walk back to the garden hand in hand. Where you left your two friend groups on opposite sides of the garden, they now sat together in the seating area, talking among themselves and sharing laughter. Sunoo was the first to notice your presence. He squeals and jumps down from his seat on a rock. Jumping, he states, “They’re back!”
Yours and Heeseung’s friends notice you guys holding hands at the same time. While your friends squeal and come running to you, talking about how “it’s finally damn time,” Heeseung’s friends approach him smugly, stating that he “finally manned up.”

—You were on a trip to Hawaii with your friend group, Jihyeon, Maddy and you.
Ever since you arrived at the island, they’ve been going to different places non-stop, didn’t even bother checking into the hotel yet while back here, you’re helping them carrying their bags everywhere and of course, being left out.
Finally after hours, you all checked in into the hotel. when the elevator doors dinged open, Jihyeon and Maddy basically dashed out, leaving you behind again. “guys! wait up!” you called out but their giggles overcame your voice down the corridor. they did hold the hotel door for you though, wow, looks like they still know you exist.
you stepped in carefully while trailing the bags behind you, ready to plop down on the bed when Maddy spoke, “we should go to the pool later” she said and Jihyeon nodded eagerly. they both turned to you, waiting for your response in anticipation.
you stood near the edge of the bed, already drained from the earlier endless shopping and walking but your stubborn side, your insecure and self-aware side said otherwise. “fine” you said as you sat down on the edge of the bed and dragged a hand down your face. “atta girl!” Maddy cheered before she dug through the shopping bags from earlier to do a haul.
At the pool, you saw that it was quite packed with people. Maddy and Jihyeon basically leaped into the blue cube space, splashing water onto you as you grumbled under your breath. you slowly sank down into the pool, letting the water slosh and engulf your figure. you settled in on the corner of the pool, tilting your head back to rest on the edge of the pool, slowly drifting away into sleep.
Then someone came up from beside you from beneath the water, his hair strands damp as he ran a hand through it and glanced over to you with his sharp eyes. you basically flinched at the way he appeared out of nowhere and shot your eyes back open.
you both just stared at each other awkwardly, his eyes holding yours firmly that made your heart skip a beat. “yes..?” you spoke up, your voice managing to not come out as a squeak. the guy then smirked faintly and tilted his head towards you, “are you seriously falling asleep in a pool?” You blinked, once, twice before answering him hesitantly with a nod and frown. “why the hesitance? also aren’t they your friends?” he said as he gestured towards Maddy and Jihyeon squealing and splashing each other with water.
“i don’t call them that” you scoffed out as you leaned back against the wall of the pool, your arms crossing in front of your chest. the guy then turned to you, one of his brows shooting up, “whaddya mean?” he asked. “i’m saying that i’m always left out by them” you said as you glanced down into the pool, seeing your reflection from the water.
“hmm….” the guy hummed before he settled down next to you too and smirked, “i can be your company for now” he offered. you perked up at his offer and raised a brow up, “what about your own friends?” you asked. he scoffed and shook his head, “they all fell asleep in the hotel, thought i just come down alone” he said as he ran his hand through his hair again and it took every fiber of you to not stare.
“right…” you mumbled as you looked away and fidgeted with the hem of your swim wear, the fabric hugging your figure tightly. the guy looked over to you and smirked subtly, his elbow nudging your side, “i’m Jay… what’s your name?” he asked and you looked up with a small smile, “I’m y/n” you said. Jay hummed and tested your name on his tongue, liking the sound of it. “nice to meet you, y/n” he spoke as he held a hand out, the water sloshing around it. you accepted his hand, shaking it gently with a wide smirk, “nice to meet you, Jay”
“sooo… you gonna tell us who was that cute guy or what?” Maddy spoke up in the hotel after you all took showers, Jihyeon beside her, grinning widely.
you were drying your hair with the towel, eyes trained onto the mirror in front of you. part of you don’t want to tell them since you’re 100% sure they have secrets they don’t share with you, but another part of you was still insecure, thinking that this might be the only time you’re involved with them, the only time you’ll relate with them. so, you reluctantly told them.
“oooh, a cute guy named Jay…” Jihyeon hummed with interest in her tone. “maybe you could introduce us to him! you know, as your friends” Jihyeon added and Maddy scoffed, “for what?”. Finally, the only time where you feel like kissing Maddy for pointing out the obvious.
“i don’t know… shouldn’t you do that? we’re probably like, your closest friends” Jihyeon scoffed out as she tilted her head towards your direction. you wanted to shout and snap at that moment. closest friend? who is she kidding? fucking hell, even Jay is probably being a better friend than she is.
“we’re not gonna even meet him, why bother” Maddy said casually as she brushed her hair and you could see a flicker of irritation flashing in Jihyeon’s eyes, “just do it or not, whatever i don’t care” Jihyeon said as she rose from the edge of the bed and went into the bathroom. “she’s hella weird” Maddy said with an eye roll.
That same night, you can’t sleep, the memory of Jay and the flicker of jealousy in Jihyeon’s eyes earlier kept you up. you decided to go to the pool for a late night swim, praying extremely hard for Jay to be there.
When you arrived, of course your prayers have been heard because there was Jay, standing near the edge of the pool, ready to go for a swim as he put on his goggles. you walked in with a few confident strides and stopped next to him, a small smile on your face illuminated by the glow of the lights in the pool, “hey Jay”
Jay turned towards you and a flicker of recognition flashed in his eyes, causing a lazy smirk to spread on his lips, “oh hey, y/n” he spoke softly, his voice sounding like honey dripping off a spoon. you smiled even wider when he remembered your name, finally feeling some sense of being included.
“late night swim too, huh?” you commented and gestured towards the pool, making Jay nod in response. “yeah… come on, join me” he said as he jumped into the pool. you jumped into the pool after him, a small laugh coming out of you.
maybe just maybe, this is the start of something. and you really pray it goes well.

—you were looking around, still getting used to your surroundings before you finally found your class. the top of the class labeled ‘firsts/beginners’. you looked down at your timetable to double-check and went in with confidence, your head tipped high.
everyone in the class stared at you weirdly, like they all heard of your scary stories back in the norm schools and that made you slightly aware of yourself but you still chose a seat in the back of the class and sat down. just then, a teacher, namely Mrs. Walker came in. “morning class, i’ll be your teacher” she said as she flashed everyone a smile. “i’m a teacher with the power of invisibility,” she started and everyone let out amused hums including you. “i know this’ll be your first time so i’ll help you through on how to control your powers or keep them under control” she said as she briefly glanced at you before shifting her gaze back to everyone, “let’s get started, everyone”
everyone got off of their seats and walked up to the teacher, already asking questions like some teacher’s pets. you hesitantly slid off your stool, glancing around the classroom more throughly this time. the class was truly beautiful. it had leaves and greenery draping every single inch of the room and windows around the room too, but they are now tinted… maybe for the vampires…
you had learned that the cute little vampire you bumped into at the library was named Jake (Eunchae told you) but ever since that day, you rarely saw him, you wonder why. oh well, maybe because you’ve only been here for a few weeks. plus, the school is huge.
Mrs. walker then appeared out of nowhere beside you and chuckled lightly, the sound of her laughter sending chills down your spine, like she was mocking you but she wasn’t, really. “this classroom was heavily inspired by me, i’m a nerd for plants” she said as she looked around the room too, her hands clasped in front of her. “i see” you spoke before you lifted your gaze up to view her. sensing your gaze, she looked down to you and flashed another smile, “what’s your power, little one?” she asked.
“i’m not a child” you muttered. “i’m sorry! what’s your name then?” she asked. “y/n” you said as you straightened up, your gaze still steadily fixed on hers. “y/n, wonderful name. what’s your power, y/n?” she asked correctly this time. “telekinesis…. though it always appears out of nowhere… i can’t really control it” you spoke, a hint of vulnerability creeping into your voice. “it’s okay, y/n. here,” she said as she grabbed a pencil holder from her desk and propped it in front of you, “try and lift this up” she said as she flashed that charming smile to you again, all teeth and whites.
you stared at her for a little longer before letting out a sigh and turned towards the pencil holder in front of you, looking at it like it’s your sworn enemy, your gaze hardening on it as you tried to push all your brain power towards it but in the end, you felt like your head was gonna explode from exhaustion so you gave up with a sigh and grumble under your breath. Mrs. walker noticed this and placed a soothing hand on your shoulder, gently patting it before pulling back, “keep trying, y/n. you don’t have to be so tense to let your powers work. try and relax, focus on the energy, close your eyes and just focus on the energy, try and picture the pencil holder floating just with your mind” she assured.
you nodded to her words and let out a longer exhale before fluttering your eyes close, focusing on the feeling as you let your shoulders sag down, letting your mind to try and make the cup float, your brain picturing the cup floating. then, you felt a spark, a spark that you feel like you can grasp onto which you did. your hand started lifting itself up slightly to try and grasp it and you succeeded in that. just then, Mrs. walker lets out an impressed gasp and clapped her hands, “well done, y/n” she said.
you opened your eyes and found the pencil holder not only floating in front of you but crushed and distorted.

you came out of class after that and found Eunchae rushing up to you, an excited grin on her face which made you smile too, “how was your first class?” she asked and you chuckled softly, shaking your head slightly, “great! i managed to control my powers but i’m still slightly weak at it” you said. Eunchae hummed and smiled, linking her arm with yours as you both walked to the library together for recess. “that’s awesome! what did you do?” she asked, her curious gaze on you as you told her everything that happened.
“that’s fun!” she said before silence engulfed you both. after a few beats you spoke up, “how was your class?” you asked instead and she let out an ‘oh’ before answering, “wonderful! i got into a project with this guy named sunoo for some presentation about the differences between norms and outcasts” she said with a twinkle of something in her eyes, perhaps... interest?
“i see…” you mumbled with a suppressed knowing smirk before you stepped into the library with her. your eyes flickered around the room before spotting a free table near a window that was shielded. you dragged Eunchae there and you both sat down, almost talking non-stop. then, a boy came and sat down opposite of you both, his glasses slightly sliding down his nose as he pulled a chair out. your eyes set on him, his tousled hair and his glasses perfectly perched on his nose, his pale glowing skin looking all too familiar. then, his name slipped out of your lips before you could even think, “Jake?” you said.
His head perked up at the sound of his name and he widened his eyes at you, taking a few second to realize you’re the new girl aka the girl who bumped into him a few days ago, “y/n right?” he asked and you nodded, “yeah, that’s me” you said with a sweet smile, making Jake’s heart melt at the sight. Eunchae was already grinning like a foolish little girl as she used the sleeve of her sweater to muffle her giggles. after that she leaned into your ear and whispered something, “he thinks you’re cute… good luck” she said before standing up and walking away, leaving your cheeks feeling all warm and flushed.
“hm…” Jake said as his eyes followed Eunchae before turning back to you with a skeptical brow raised, “Eunchae’s your roommate, right?” he asked and you nodded slowly, your turn to raise a brow now, “how’d you know?”
Jake chuckled softly and pushed his glasses up by the corner with a grin, his fangs peeking through again, making your eyes slip for a split second. Jake noticed that but decided to not comment on it. “you’re basically talk of this school right now. with your past dealing with bullies and how people always get hurt by your inability to control your powers” he explained, his voice sounding like pure honey to your ears, you didn’t even hear half of the things he said. “oh… i didn’t know i’m that popular” you muttered shyly. what were you doing? you never knew you’d be shy in front of anyone let alone a boy! you have to snap out of it…
jake chuckled again and shrugged, leaning forward to place his chin on the palm of his hand, “well, i don’t know.. popular, pretty, cold… you still caught my eye” he said with that damn grin of his. you widened your eyes at his bold statement and smiled widely, feeling all giddy from his words alone. “whaddya say to giving me your number, y/n?” he asked.

all the students were in the school hall as there was some stupid event. no one cares of course, all the students went to find their friends in other classes and talked and some goofing around. You sat in your circle of friends, giselle sitting beside you, hanni and jungwon finally stop being all lovey dovey and acting like normal human beings and sunoo on his phone.
you were staring at something or… someone to be exact. you stared at someone in the distance, of course it’s riki, who else? (that’s the literal whole plot of the story) you stared at him, but not in the mad intense way, in the soft and caring way, the you want to literally cup his cheeks and pepper kisses all over his face way. giselle noticed your staring and raised a brow, following your gaze but she couldn’t figure out what you were staring at, “what are you staring at?” she asked
you snapped out of your thoughts and looked at her, wanting to come up with a snarky comment but no words came out as you quickly went back to your phone and scrolled on it. giselle raised her brow up even higher and went back to her phone, her skeptical gaze lingering on you for a second longer before letting go of it.
as soon as giselle looked away, you looked back up to watch riki but only found him to be staring back at you already. your heart skipped more than one beat at the sight and riki smiled at you, an amused glint in his eyes. it felt like time had slowed, and everything else faded into the background, everyone’s heads were a blur except riki’s. you knew you should ignore him or give him a cold gaze but you can’t stop the giddy smile spreading on your lips.
then as fast as it happened, it ended when riki looked away as his friend pulled him harshly. you let out a huff and went back to your phone, but your mind couldn’t stop replaying that cute little smile on his kissable lips.

back home, you were scrolling on your phone, feeling very boyfriend deprived as you saw all these couple trends on insta. you saw one where it was a couple that bumped into each other on the streets and crashed their lips together. you rolled your eyes at it and decided to send it to giselle with the caption ‘us’ because you always flirted with her playfully.
when you clicked share, your finger hovered above giselle’s account, and then, like it had a mind of its own you clicked send to riki instead. your heart thumped in your chest and after a few more seconds of contemplation you decided to unsend it. but too late, riki already saw it and he was typing out a response.
“respectfully, what?” he sent and you flushed in embarrassment? you’re not even sure at this point. instead of typing out an apology, you decided to play along, “uh yes” you sent. “wdym uh yes???” he typed out and you typed out another reply fast, “yes means yes </3” “no then” he typed and you didn’t know if he was being playful or not, “cmonnnn” you typed and added, “ill beg”
you didn’t know why you were being so into this banter, maybe you’re desperate, maybe you’re just spilling your feelings subconsciously and riki is still being the oblivious fuck he is, maybe you want to finally show him your real feelings, crystal clear. “smth wrong with u?” he typed and you send three shaking head emojis. “i doubt so”
you let out a huff and typed out a more obvious answer, “take me out and u’ll see it urself” you sent bravely. riki frowned at the message and scoffed, “we r platonic friends tho”. you chewed on your bottom lip at the answer, not liking how he got you friend-zoned, “we cld always be more than that yk”
riki sent some skull emojis and you grumbled under your breath, not finding a single bit of this funny as you tossed your phone away.

next day, you were shopping at your local grocery shop. you were in one of the aisles, looking at bags of candies and your favorite r&b song playing in your headphones, making you don’t want to leave just yet. you finally picked three bags of gummies and walked out of the aisle, your stride carefree and loose as you headed towards the check out area.
just then, a cart accidentally bumped into you and you looked up to find a random blond “sorry” you muttered before walking past him. “aye, yn” the man said as he grabbed onto your wrist and pulled you back. “hey! get the fuck away! i will not hesitate to beat the-” you pulled your arm back aggressively and looked up to only find riki…oh. “continue” he said with a tilted head, his eyes boring into yours intently. “oh- uh i-” you stammered but quickly brushed it off, “nothing, you did something with your hair?” you asked as you eyed his silver like blonde hair while pulling your headphones down.
“yeah. i don’t really like it though” he said as he touched his hair and brushed a few strands away from his face. “no! no, no, keep it” you quickly said and he raised a brow up at you, “i mean, it’s nice” you said nonchalantly as you looked away and cleared your throat.
“right…” he said before he leaned closer to you and spoke, “so… didn’t you say you wanted to take me out?” he asked. you widened your eyes at his words and stuttered, “i-..i was drunk” you blurted. “i thought you hated drinking?” shit, he remembers? well fuck, he cares more than he lets on. “why?” you managed to not choke out as you frowned at him. riki rolled his eyes and sighed in disappointment…? “well, i just wanted to see if you have the guts to say those words to my face,” he said before backing up to go back to his cart, “it looks like you don’t” he said before walking away with his cart.
you stood there, mouth left agape as you watched him walk away. you stared at his retreating figure, debating to whether walk up to him or not before determination got the best of you and you hurriedly chased after him, “wait! please wait!” you breathlessly said as you grabbed onto his arm, “will you go out with me?” you actually choked out this time as you kept your gaze on everywhere but him. “hm….” he said but he noticed your gaze wavering and he waved a hand in front of you, “can you at least look at me?” he asked and you didn’t listen. “hey” he muttered as he turned your chin with his hand, “say it again” he said with a narrowed gaze. “would you go out with me…?” you mumbled under your breath as you glared at him.
“of course, since you asked so nicely” he said as he patted your head with a grin before walking away. “i’ll text you!” you called out as you watched him walk away. your whole chest was filled with warmth you never knew you could have as your head was in a jumble of thoughts.
