𐙚⋆.˚ synopsis: When Jake stumbles across an old high school yearbook, he becomes captivated by an unnamed girl haunting the background of every photograph. He follows the trail of your mysterious death six years earlier, only to discover that the missing pieces aren’t just buried in the investigation files and newspaper clippings—they’re missing from his own memory.

Something thrummed deep within Jake.
His shaky fingers reached up to brush over the laminated page, stopping just above the faint outline of the damp strands of hair plastered against your temple.
He doesn’t know you.
He knows that much.
And yet, somewhere far beyond memory, he swears he can hear a laugh. Clear like the sound of wind chimes and girlhood.
“Who’s this?”
Jay barely glances up. He’s busy digging through another cardboard box, tossing books into one pile and old records into another with distracted efficiency. Jake was supposed to be helping him unpack, but somewhere between dusty photo albums and forgotten keepsakes, he’d stopped moving altogether.
Jay finally turns, an absentminded brow arching.
“What?”
Jake lifts the yearbook.
“Her.”
And for a prolonged moment, there’s only silence.
Jay shakes his head, looking away.
“…Don’t know her name. She kept to herself most of the time.”
Jake hums. “Hm. Weird. I can’t find her name or photo anywhere else in the yearbook.”
“Yeah. Real weird,” Jay replies.
𐙚
When he finally found your name, it was in an old newspaper clipping.
You’d died with four other girls—free-falling, beautiful, and forever young. Preserved in the cold resin of sweet, senseless death.
And yet a memory wafts in, tender. So tender he fears it isn’t his.
The skin of your hand brushing against his.
A breathy laugh.
Flushed cheeks before you dart away with your books clutched to your chest.
“Tomorrow. I promise I’ll see you tomorrow—” you call back softly.
Then it leaves.
Again.
Jake forgets again.
𐙚
A pounding headache.
Jungwon shakes a half-filled prescription bottle at Jake.
“Did you forget to take these again?” His eyebrows furrow.
Jake stares back with a single thought:
Why is he taking them to begin with?
𐙚
“Jake, you’ve gotta take your meds. You aren’t sleeping,” Jay says softly.
Jungwon and Jay sit on the sofa opposite Jake, brows knitted with concern.
But they don’t get it.
Every time he wakes up, Jake feels his grip on something unnamed yet vital slipping away.
“I’ve got more important things to do,” he says simply.
Jungwon raises a slow brow. “Like?”
On instinct, Jake replies. The words flood out like second nature. He doesn’t know what they mean—only that they mean something.
“I’ve gotta go see about a girl.”
He fails to notice their faces growing pale.
𐙚
On his bedroom wall, pink thread connects old photographs, newspaper clippings, and screenshots of every report he’d found online and printed. A hair tie and a pale pink ribbon are pinned to the upper-right corner.
Jake falls asleep on the floor in the quiet of summer, almost kneeling before the corkboard like a makeshift altar.
𐙚
The memory never lets him see your whole face.
Only the glimmer of your smile—soft, faint, and somehow sad.
Why were you always so sad?
He never got to ask you.
It was his biggest regret, second only to breaking his leg and missing prom. No one took a photo of you in that pretty dress you wore.
Jake forgets again by morning.
𐙚
Your hair is splayed across the stark white pillow of his bed, damp with sweat.
In the corner of his memory, posters line the walls.
You were in his childhood bedroom.
Your small hands clutch at his shoulders as you wince. He watches you curl your arms inward, trying to hide your body.
Jake kisses your wrists before gently threading his fingers through yours.
It was the first time he’d ever felt the push and pull of another body. He wanted to tell you he loved you, but the words refused to come.
It didn’t feel like the right time.
But he did.
More than anything, Sim Jaeyun did.
He probably always will.
𐙚
He doesn’t forget this time.
Jake finally admits something is missing.
When he arrives at Jay and Jungwon’s shared apartment with dark circles hanging beneath his eyes and says nothing at all, there is no going back.
Neither of them speaks.
Instead, they drag an old box of DVDs and cassette tapes in front of him.
They leave him alone in the living room after setting up the TV.
Jay goes to heat the kettle.
It’s the only other sound in the apartment besides the repetitive click of Jake replaying the clip of you laughing in his arms.
𐙚
He didn’t know you.
For the life of him, Jake couldn’t remember the night he’d won state finals with you in his arms.
But that laugh.
Oh, that laugh.
He knew it better than the sound of his own heartbeat.
𐙚
Another box, hidden away in Jay’s closet.
Photos of you laughing with all of Jake’s friends.
Jay has an arm slung around your shoulders, grinning through tears while you shyly try to sing during grad night.
Jake reads through a letter you’d written to Jay.
You were best friends.
𐙚
Jungwon quietly slides the nearly empty prescription bottle across the table.
For a moment, Jake only stares at it.
“I forget. I remember. Like a fish in a fishbowl, swimming around and around.”
“Why the fuck did she do it? I still don’t get it. I don’t know who those other girls were—the other girls who… did it too.”
“She didn’t want you to understand,” Jungwon replies.
Jake furrows his brows.
“What do you mean?”
Jungwon pauses, thoughtful.
“Knowing her… she probably thought that if you understood, it meant you weren’t safe in yourself either. She wanted you to live. Without some twisted ideology. Without romanticizing death. She didn’t want you to understand her pain, because that would’ve meant you’d lived through it too.”
Then they sit together in thoughtful silence while Jungwon remembers the pale pink ribbons you always tied your hair up with.
𐙚
Jungwon and Jay speak in hushed voices.
“…He can’t keep doing this, Won.” Jay sighs, frustration creeping into his voice. “This happens every year.”
“And it’s hard to track. It happens once a year. Randomly.”
Jungwon threads his hands through his hair. They catch at a knot, as he pulls at the bleach blonde strands recklessly.
He sighs.
“I don’t know how to help.” Jungwon admits.
“Neither do I,” Jay starts, casting a sidelong glance at the gap in the door where he can see Jake sliding in a new VHS tape. “It’s hard for me too, you know? I loved her like my own blood. I can’t make sense of it any more than anyone else can.”
Jungwon eyes Jay sadly.
“I just don’t get it.”
This time, Jay stares back before replying.
“She didn’t want anyone to understand.”
And maybe that’s the only thing they all could agree on knowing.
𐙚
The Virgin Suicides.
That’s what the headlines called the group of girls who chose to take their lives that day. They were too young—too sheltered. The only thing they had in common was that they might as well have lived with collars around their necks.
The day they took his favorite girl away.
Jake didn’t know what happened behind closed doors. It was sobering, really—the idea that you could love someone so deeply despite all the needless gaps that stretched between you.
So much of a person could remain shrouded in mystery.
Jake knew the taste of your favorite chapstick and the way your fingers curled around the pages of a book, as though you understood how easily something could tear.
You were unfathomably gentle. Soft. And kind.
The good die young, but sometimes it’s their own hand that leads them there.
𐙚
Jake sits on the porch swing. The air is thick with humidity that clings to his skin like honey, softened by a breeze that feels a little like forgiveness.
It’s summer.
The same kind of summer as the one when he first met you.
He remembers your first date—the one where he fell flat on his face trying to impress you with a skateboard trick. He remembers your quiet laugh, the first real one you’d ever given him.
Even his scraped knees trembled less than his boyish heart.
Your pink ribbon caught the wind, and even while bleeding, he chased after it before it slipped through his fingers, no matter how hard he tried.
Jake closes his eyes.
He swears he sees your silhouette in the distance.

It’s been three weeks since you left for Colorado. Three weeks of new routines, a new job, a new apartment, a new city. Three weeks to prove every fear Jake had voiced in the airport before you left wasn’t entirely irrational.
You’ve exchanged a total of seven phone calls, each one shorter than the one before, and a hundred or so texts. Jake had become the king of the double text and had no shame in triple or quadruple-texting.
Jake: Hope your day isn’t too crazy.
Jake: Call me later, need to tell you about Fanboy setting off the fire alarm. 😂
Jake: No rush though.
Jake: Ignore me. Call me when you can. 😘
Even when you don’t reply until the next morning, he reminds himself you’re busy, not ignoring him.
It’s easier said than done. He’d overheard a colleague on your third phone call, a bold bass tone that made Jake picture a large, muscular guy with tattoos. The sort of broad-shouldered guy who ended up shirtless on the covers of those extremely spicy romance novels you insisted you only read ‘for the plot’. He’d talked himself into an insecure spiral of losing you to this faceless man, and Phoenix had talked him off the ledge when he’d suggested taking some early leave for a surprise visit.
“You heard from her much?” Jake asks Phoenix, propping his iPad atop a stack of flight manuals and papers he really needs to grade, on the kitchen island. He makes it sound conversational because the others are in the next room and he knows Natasha hasn’t mentioned his spiraling to anyone else. He’s grateful for it.
“Not much,” she answers just as quietly as he had asked. “A couple texts, and obviously the photos in the group chat.”
Jake smiles despite himself, remembering the selfie you’d dropped in the group chat two nights ago. Mountains behind you, smiling so brightly he’d stared at the picture for five minutes before realizing everyone else had moved on to arguing about something stupid.
Rooster wanders in, taking a chip from the bowl on the countertop. “You bought fancy tortilla chips.”
Jake doesn’t look up from his tablet positioning. “They were on sale.”
“Bullshit,” Rooster scoffs as the rest enter, and all take a sample of said chips.
“You put them in a bowl,” Coyote adds.
“Because I don’t want all your crumby hands touching my stuff.”
“Taste expensive,” Fanboy says around a mouthful.
“They taste like chips.” Jake defends.
“They taste like you were given a list of what to buy,” Payback smirks, crunching a chip loudly.
“Fine,” Jake huffs, adjusting the iPad a half-inch to the left. “I was given strict instructions and a detailed list with pictures. Satisfied?”
“Your girl really knows how to spoil us,” Bob grins.
Even when she’s not here. Instead of saying that aloud, he beams proudly. “My girl really does.”
“Our girl,” Phoenix corrects sternly.
“Exactly,” Rooster agrees, “we’re all emotionally invested now.”
“You did that to yourselves,” Jake shrugs.
Before anyone can throw something at him, the iPad lights up and buzzes against the countertop.
Weirdly, he becomes nervous, his stomach doing a little flip. You promised you’d join game night. Well, you promised Rooster. Jake had smiled and nodded because saying ‘please don’t forget about us,’ would’ve sounded pathetic. Somewhere during the last week, he’d convinced himself you’d cancel.
Ignoring the nerves, he swipes to answer.
Your face fills the screen almost instantly. The backdrop is unmistakably different from San Diego. Beyond the window, the evening sky glows amber against dark silhouettes of distant mountains.
“There she is,” Phoenix cheers.
Before Jake can even say hello, everyone is crowding toward the iPad, waving, shouting greetings over one another until your laugh crackles through the speakers.
“Hi! I can see exactly none of you.”
Jake chuckles, zooming out on the screen so the camera picks up more of the room. “Better?”
“Perfect.” Your gaze settles on him for a beat longer than anyone else, long enough for the corners of your mouth to soften. “Hi.”
His answering smile comes just as easily. “Hi yourself.”
Beside him, Rooster makes an exaggerated gagging noise. Without taking his eyes off the screen, Jake reaches back and blindly punches him on the shoulder. It lands perfectly. Rooster stumbles a step, clutching his arm in mock pain.
“That’s assault,” Rooster teases, “and it’s on video.”
“Worth it,” Jake counters.
“Behave, children,” Phoenix sighs before turning back to the screen. Her brow furrows. “Wait...are you still in the office? It’s after seven.”
“Yeah,” you shrug. “The Wi-Fi at the apartment isn’t great. I didn’t want to risk freezing through game night.”
The apartment.
Not my apartment. Jake isn’t entirely sure why the distinction settles something restless in his chest, but it does.
Before he can examine it any further, Bob leans over the island, toward the screen. “Can we see it?”
You smile, genuinely happy to oblige as you reach to pick up your phone. “Hold on,” you say a moment before the camera flips to show the room.
A wall of built-in bookshelves stretches floor to ceiling, broken only by framed awards and carefully arranged photographs. A charcoal sofa sits opposite two matching armchairs around a low oak coffee table that looks more at home in a designer showroom than a workspace.
“Damn,” Coyote mutters.
The camera pans toward the glass front of the office, the frosted panels offering privacy, but you’d see silhouettes of people pass through the corridor outside.
“You’ve got a lounge?” Payback asks.
“Technically it’s a meeting area.”
“It’s a lounge.”
You laugh but don’t argue.
The camera continues across the room, catching a massive television mounted on the wall before settling on the window behind your desk.
The city stretches out beneath the building, lights beginning to flicker to life as the last of the sunset paints the distant mountains in shades of gold and burnt orange.
Fanboy whistles. “Okay, that’s ridiculous.”
“She earned it,” Jake says.
There’s a knock against the glass wall of your office. Three light taps. Jake’s attention snaps to the movement, and you haven’t flipped the camera back to you yet.
“Come in,” you call.
As you turn, the camera swings with you. For a split second, Jake catches a broad frame filling the doorway before the phone dips toward the floor as you lower it to your side.
All he can see now is the bottom of a dark oak bookshelf and designer shoes.
His stomach drops.
Him.
Even before the man speaks, Jake knows it’s the owner of the same voice he’d overheard on the phone.
“You left this in the conference room.”
“Oh wow,” Phoenix gasps, eyes flaring wide for a split second before she schools her features.
Jake tears his eyes away from the screen just long enough to glare at her. “Oh wow?” he whisper-shouts, “Seriously?”
She winces apologetically. “Not wow wow,” she gestures helplessly toward the screen. “Just wow, he’s got a deep voice.”
“That’s not any better,” Rooster mutters, trying not to laugh.
Jake completely misses whatever is being said in your office. All he catches is your laugh, not what was funny, just your laugh. He doesn’t like it, and his imagination supplies the rest of the conversation without permission. Some inside joke, mutual thoughts that are whispered behind closed doors to bond, to get closer.
The camera blurs as you move again. “Sorry guys,” you say as the camera lifts. “This is Evan.”
He’s tall. Really tall. Broad shoulders. Evan appears to be around the group's collective average age. Dark curls that somehow manage to look artfully untidy.
Definitely spends forty-five minutes doing his hair. Jake thinks.
The blue button-down looks custom-made, sleeves rolled neatly to below his elbow, the top button casually undone. One hand disappears into the pocket of expensive-looking trousers while the other offers a small, polite wave toward the camera.
Jake has no doubts that a tailored jacket and a tie in the same tone have been meticulously hung in an office closet somewhere.
He immediately decides he hates him. Not because he’s done anything wrong, simply on principle. And because he looks exactly like the cover models on your favorite books.
Probably says things like ‘let’s circle back.’
“Nice to finally meet you,” Evan says with an easy smile.
Jake narrows his eyes.
Huh, typical nice guy act.
“Evan’s been helping me settle in,” you explain. “I’d have died on day two if he hadn’t shown me the good coffee shops.”
He chuckles. “I’ve heard a lot about the legendary game nights.”
“Only the good stuff, I hope,” Rooster says because Jake can’t seem to find his voice.
“Mostly that they’re non-negotiable. So we’ve accepted we’re losing this one for the monthly Quiz Night,” He nods to you behind the camera. “Have fun.”
“You too.”
“See you Monday.” He calls over his shoulder.
It’s mundane, a polite thing to say, but Jake is suddenly intensely jealous. Evan gets to see you Monday. He doesn’t. It’s irrational, and he hates that.
Jake’s spiraling thoughts are apparently clearly visible on his face, so Bob steps in to save him. “Okay,” he announces loudly. “Let’s get this show on the road.”
Over the next hour, three arguments erupt. Phoenix has had to put Coyote in a timeout. Seven times, Fanboy accusingly fact-checks whoever is the Game Master for that round about the answers. Fanboy is wrong exactly seven times. Jake has been uncharacteristically quiet since Payback called you Colorado and everyone adopted the nickname, like he needs the reminder.
“Okay, okay, quiet down,” Phoenix calls like a kindergarten teacher, “Colorado won’t be able to hear.”
Coyote waits for the noise to dissipate and then pulls a card from the deck. "Okay, for the tiebreaker. If Team Two gets this right, you win the game." Pausing, he surveys the groups, ensuring everyone is paying attention before continuing. "Which geographical feature is an isolated hill with steep sides and a small flat top?”
Fanboy does a drum roll on the kitchen countertop, and Payback flips the timer.
“A cliff?” Rooster asks, looking at Phoenix, clearly not confident with his answer.
“It’s a butte,” you shout through the speaker.
Everyone turns toward the iPad. “Are you sure?” Phoenix asks.
You laugh. “I’ve spent the last three weeks surrounded by them and getting lectured on the differences between a mountain, a butte, and a mesa.”
“I’m going to need your final answer.”
“Butte,” you and your three teammates say simultaneously.
“Correct,” Coyote says.
“Show off,” Jake smiles at you.
Although the apartment is a mess, pizza boxes stacked haphazardly, empty beer bottles littering every available surface, Jake insists he doesn’t need help cleaning up. He’ll happily tackle it alone if it buys him ten more minutes with you.
He carries the iPad with him, holding it to his chest as he herds everyone out of the front door. They all call goodbye, and you promise to call Phoenix tomorrow three times before she agrees to leave.
Finally, the front door closes, and silence settles. Jake takes you both to the couch, propping the iPad on the coffee table.
“God,” You murmur, smile faltering. “I miss you guys.”
“Feeling's mutual.”
He watches as you drop your gaze, and he recognizes the deep inhale for what it is—an attempt to stifle your emotions.
“Hey,” he says gently. “You okay?”
“Yeah.” Your answer comes a fraction too quickly, and the rise of his brow makes you confess, “I’m just a little homesick.”
He nods slowly. He more than understands. It’s not an area code you miss. It’s the people in it. “That’s allowed.”
“Is it?”
“I’d be offended if you weren’t.”
You smile, but it doesn’t quite reach your eyes. “I’m busy, which is good. But everyone keeps asking how I’m settling in.” You glance toward the office door before looking back at him. “I keep telling them I’m getting there.”
There’s too long a pause, so Jake asks, “And are you?”
“Some days.” You sigh. “But then I talk to you or Phoenix calls, and I’m back to convincing myself I made the wrong decision.”
“You didn’t,” he says, though he doesn’t entirely feel it. He changes the subject before he drops to his knees and begs you to come home. “Work’s good though?”
“Work’s,” you hesitate, searching for an answer, “everything I thought it would be.”
It’s not quite an answer. He notices now that you look exhausted, heavy shadows beneath your eyes.
“You’re working too hard.”
“Probably,” you huff a laugh.
“Take a day off.” Though he wants to say, ‘come home.’
“Mr. Seresin, are you encouraging poor work ethic?”
“I’m encouraging my favorite person to stop answering emails after eight o’clock.”
That earns him a genuine smile. “I’ll think about it.”
“That’s not a yes.”
“It’s the best you’re getting tonight.”
“I’ll take it.”
Swiveling in your chair to look out at the mountains, you sigh, “You ever seen them?”
“I’ve flown over them a couple times.”
“Going Mach 8 in a fighter jet doesn’t exactly give you time to take in the scenery.”
He chuckles. “True.”
“They’re beautiful,” you say quietly as if to yourself. “They’re just not home.”
He smiles. “Home isn’t going anywhere. And I’m coming to you in a couple weeks.”
You return the smile. “I know.”
“Go get some sleep,” he says, reluctantly.
“Copy that, Lieutenant,” you chuckle with a lazy salute.
He sits up straighter, uses his radio voice, “Hangman to Tower.”
You raise an eyebrow but play along. “Go ahead, Hangman.”
“Requesting permission to terminate communications.”
You smile sadly and take a moment to reply. “Permission granted.”
He salutes. “Sweet dreams, Colorado.”
“Only if you’re in them.”
“Flirt,” Jake teases. “I love you.”
“I love you too.”

ex for a reason : 29 dog with social anxiety and a broken heart
𝘄𝗰 𝟣.𝟣𝟦𝟧
“you like him so much.” yujin’s voice cut through, startling you in the process. your head shot up instantly by the sudden claim, only to find her, riku and sunoo staring at you with a knowing grin.
“much more than sunghoon.” sunoo added, pushing his notebook aside to give you his full attention. “you’ve been smiling this whole time, the equations can’t be that funny.”
there was no use trying to prove them wrong when you could physically feel the way your lips were stuck in a smile.
“stop, before he comes back and hears.” you said, rolling your eyes and attempting to bring your focus back to your laptop. their unwavering stares didn’t falter as you expected, instead landing heavier now that you were aware of it.
your phone screen lit up, stealing your attention away. a short, simple text from jake read: went to another restroom, this one was locked.
you didn’t register the audible sound you let out until you looked back up, seeing the three of them exchange a look of pure amusement. “don’t even—” you tried to protest.
“and to think you were convinced you didn’t like him.” yujin shook her head disapprovingly, contrasting the way her face beamed.
“you know why i did that.” you huffed.
jake, who had finished his business with haste, took quick, eager strides back towards the library with nothing but you on his mind.
there was a warmth blossoming in the pits of his stomach, his heart rate far beyond what was considered normal—beating in a way a friend’s heart shouldn’t.
but you weren’t exactly a friend, were you?
before his breakup, jake used to be a very hopeful guy. there was a version of him that took every good thing placed in his path at face value without overthinking whether it was too good to be true.
his ex made him wonder exactly that. had he been blinded by his own love to not see that everything wasn’t rose tinted?
then you walked into his path effortlessly, overwhelming him with your sudden interest in him. a feeling that had become foreign.
although a little skeptical at first, jake fell for you, even if everything in him told him not to.
it was inevitable that he would. you were there every single day, breaking down the walls he had put up, proving that maybe he had been silly for thinking care was something to be earned—not when you gave it to him so freely as though no one deserved it more than he did.
so he dared. dared to let his guard down around you. dared to let you overwhelm him in various ways. dared to believe that perhaps, he was worthy of love. yours, specifically.
jake thinks he’s never felt his heart tighten this much before at the simple thought of a girl. he was so in love with you, the feelings were ready to burst out of him.
he rounded the corner of the library, his feet mindlessly carrying him towards you.
the incoherent voices he heard from the distance started to grow clearer the closer he got. it was undoubtedly yours, followed by a string of laughter from the others. jake found himself smiling too.
“isn’t it kinda funny, though.” riku suddenly chortled. you all turned to face him, waiting for him to elaborate. “this whole jake thing, how you never intended for this to happen.”
“i honestly can’t believe how close they are.” sunoo followed.
“jake was supposed to be your ticket to getting with sunghoon!” yujin chimed in, her voice laced with disbelief. “how did you get sidetracked so badly?”
“i don’t know, okay? sunghoon was.. it just happened.” you sighed softly, though the faint smile on your face proved you to be very content with the predicament you found yourself in.
you felt your heart warm thinking about it, unaware of jake stood meters away, covered by the rows of books.
jake has gone through heartbreak before. he knew the feeling that followed after someone who once occupied space in his tender heart left him feeling unwanted.
this feeling that suddenly washed over him, however, ached far worse than anything he had felt before.
it was numb at first, the words not registering fully before he felt his stomach drop abruptly, feeling hollow and empty. his heart, previously thumping erratically, quickened for an entirely different reason now. he felt his whole body tingle, alternating between burning and that same numbness he felt at first, followed by the painful sensation of a cold bucket of water being dumped over him.
jake presumed he’d be immune to another heartbreak. that nothing could be worse than what his ex left him as.
this time, he didn’t feel his heart break—he felt it shatter into millions of pieces. a feeling close to getting it ripped out in a swift motion, leaving him bare and exposed, slowly dying in the palm of your hand.
sunghoon, you said. the name alone felt like a stab to his body. and a sudden realisation dawned upon him.
jake wanted to let out a laugh, a recap of every single time you seemed eerily interested in his best friend flashing through his mind. he should’ve known. he did know, deep down.
because jake was a cautious person, someone who stopped taking any sign of affection at face value—conditioned to fear that there had to be ulterior motives behind them.
and you proved his fears right, albeit not with jay, as he was fixated on, but with sunghoon.
he felt sick even thinking about how long you had been orchestrating this. were any of your words ever genuine? had you been plotting on him way before his breakup? did you specifically wait for his moment of vulnerability, ready to strike when he was an easy target?
his head started hurting, not more than his chest, but enough for him to rest his body against the bookshelves and stay there for what felt like eternity. you had fallen into silence, the only audible noise being the tapping of your keyboard, and jake’s ragged breathing.
he wasn’t sure what to do anymore. going back there and pretending he never heard any of this was impossible. jake sighed, pushing himself off the shelf and trying his best to compose a neutral expression before finally stepping within the group’s line of sight.
“you took forever.” you joked, and it made jake’s heart cave in even more. he wanted to break down right then and there. he felt so weak around you. even after you tore his heart out. especially after you did.
instead of sitting down like you expected, jake spared you a brief glance, too busy looking off to the side. “i think i’m gonna leave.” he murmured.
you didn’t get the chance to ask anything further. jake departed, leaving you to watch him disappear around the corner.
it was only once the fresh air from outside hit him in the face that jake finally allowed himself to let out a sniffle.

𝗇𝗈𝗍𝖾𝗌𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺𝖾 : the angst is finally here yay icl i lowkey got sad writing this im growing attached to jake in this. i honestly contemplated tagging this smau as miscommunication trope but i felt like by doing that it would downplay what jake heard because she did try and use him to get with his best friend it doesn’t matter to him that she dropped her intentions it wouldn’t stop him from thinking none of it was genuine. anyways sorry. love everyone.

SYNOPSIS: only being in high school, jake was your first boyfriend. in time, you guys had your first argument over one of his girl friends who obviously liked him. like any other typical boy, jake had not a clue about the mind of a woman, but that doesn’t make him any less sweet—just a little more infuriating.

you’ll always be grateful that jake got placed into your math class or else you never would’ve gotten to know how much of a sweetie he was. from getting seated together to waking him up during class to going to homecoming together to now, you guys had become inseparable.
finally, it was summer break! you were absolutely gonna have the most fun blasted summer of all time. you had all you needed: your perfect circle of friends, your boyfriend who was now part of your group, and a 5 minute way to the beach. what you didn’t need was her.
jake’s neighbor, stella, who always had to tag along, claiming “her parents are making her.” at first you didn’t mind it, it was cute even. jake treated her like a sister, giving her playful head pats and always offering her snacks. you’d thought she was younger with how she acts around him, but no, you found out that she’s just the same age as you two, and that shifted your view of her. now, she was always coming to hangouts with you and your friends, getting in on inside jokes, and even attending sleepovers. who even was this!?
you wanted to blame everything; the fact that she was intruding in your space, making jokes with your friends, hanging out in places you’d reserved for special people; but deep down you knew that most of all it was how close she was to jake. jake, being a stupid boy, didn’t even realize. this was all completely normal to him, and that was the worst part.
a couple of times you’d tried to hint it to him with comments like, “she doesn’t even really know anyone, why should she come?” or, “her parents can’t possibly know every time we’re going out, maybe she’s just lying.” he never seemed to get it, but you couldn’t just say it up front because then you’d be seen as the nagging over jealous girlfriend. for now, you just tried to ignore it and let it be, hoping soon she’d somehow disappear.

the waves hit the sand with the most soothing crash, the salty air coating your skin. the sun was beaming and you were in your element. you were here with all of your favorite people, with the exception of stella. after putting down the blanket, a few of the girls laid out on it to start tanning. you were sat on the edge with jake by your side, applying sunscreen.
“i like your swimsuit baby, is it new?” he asked, squeezing more of the sunblock onto his hands. you blushed and smiled, “it is, in fact! thank you for noticing.” he just cheesed and hummed in acknowledgment. every part of your body was now protected by the lotion, except your back, so of course you were going to ask jake to help you. “jakey can you-“ “jake!! can you pretty please put some sunblock on my back? i can’t reach.” the most irritating, agitating voice interrupted you before you could ask. all you could do was roll your eyes extremely hard and let out a very obvious sigh, but you tried to not let it ruin your mood that much.
without anything other than a polite smile and a simple “sure,” jake applied the white lotion onto her back, and she was so clearly gloating! there was no way her behavior wasn’t purposely to get closer to him and piss you off! after he was done you sighed once more and turned, deciding to try and get some alone time with him. “jakey, as i was saying, can you get my back for me?” with a grin, he nods and says, “of course.” after he’s done you stand up and hold your hands out for him, pulling him up and giving him a kiss. “can we go swim now?” you ask after pulling away, ruffling his hair. maybe you were being a little extra with the pda, but you couldn’t help but want to rub it in her face. “sure! cmon!” his boyish excitement and subtle australian accent were so endearing to you and you almost forgot you were upset, but then you were so rudely reminded.
“i’ll come too!” stella piped up. “oh. well me and ja-“ “okay! let’s go guys!” right. jake was just so so oblivious it’s annoying. you realllllyyy wanted to get this moment apart from everyone else, so you grabbed jake’s hand to stop him from running off into the ocean, and turned to stella. “i was actually hoping to hang out with jake for a little. alone.” the moment those words left your mouth, you could see her expression flip. she still wore her friendly smile, but you saw it in her eyes that she was slightly put off by you standing against her this time.
“well can’t you do that in your own time? it’s a group hangout for a reason.” god, you really weren’t tryna start something but she was making it really hard not to.
“i think i can spend my time with who i want to how i want to and right now i feel like spending time with my boyfriend.”
“and what am i taking away from that? are you jealous or something?”
oh that did it.
“why can’t you just leave!! you’re not even supposed to be here, no one invited you, and jake doesn’t like you either!!”
jake just stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do. he’s never been in this kind of situation. when he finally did speak up, it was completely the wrong thing to say.
“well i never said i didn’t like stella, she’s my friend. i don’t see the problem with all of us hanging out together, we can all be friends…!”
“thank you, jake!”
you glared up at him and dropped his hand, walking off. “fine! if you guys are such good ‘friends’ then you guys can hang out with each other! i’m done!” you shouted at them as you returned back to the blanket where the others were to collect your things and go home.
jake was left speechless. did he do something wrong? he was only trying to mediate the situation. obviously something he said wasn’t the right answer, and it felt weird for you to be mad at him. “i’m done.” does that mean broken up? there was so much to think about that he didn’t understand. now he didn’t feel like swimming so much anymore.
jake runs after you, trying to get you to talk to him, “y/n- baby stop!” your strides aren’t long enough compared to his longer legs and he easily catches up. his hand grips your wrist gently, but firm enough to make sure you can’t pull away. “y/n. what was that all about..??” his voice is confused, desperate, and utterly afraid. afraid that his favorite person is over with him because of something he didn’t even know.
you didn’t wanna face him. you knew that he’d see that you’re crying and be all sweet and you won’t even be able to hold you ground, so you just stood and looked the other way. you tried to hold back your tears and stay silent, but it was so hard when you couldn’t stop thinking about everything you were feeling.
a small tug on your wrist, jake trying to get your attention. “look at me. please.” you shook your head and tried to sound composed as you spoke. “jake just- stop.” fuck. there was no way he didn’t hear the crack and wavering in your voice.
jake’s eyes widened a little and his brows pulled together in even deeper concern, his empty hand reaching to grab your chin and bring your face to face his. you’re quick to push his hand away and yank your wrist from his grip, covering your face as tears overflow down your cheeks. “i said stop!!” you shout, and so he does. he stands there in silence while his mind races with ways to fix whatever the hell was going on.
with no prior knowledge of something like this, he just decides to continue trying to get you to talk. “can you please just tell me what is wrong? i can’t help you i can’t fix this if i don’t know exactly what’s the problem!” you take a deep breath and finally turn to him, mascara all run down now that your tears got to it before the ocean.
“you really don’t understand??! it’s her!! it’s the fact that a beautiful other girl is literally glued to your hip and you don’t even care, when i’m right here!”
“and i was supposed to know?! how am i supposed to know anything about how you feel when you rarely ever open up to me??”
“god, don’t you try to turn this around on me! you just do! that’s what good boyfriends do! they don’t keep obviously interested girls around out of respect!”
“okay well i’ve never done this before! i think you’re forgetting this is my first relationship too, i don’t know these things!”
“it’s fucking common sense, jake! i swear you know nothing!”
ouch.
“so-… so then please, y/n, let me learn. i can’t just throw this away, throw us away.”
the fury clouding your mind washes away once you hear the crack in his now much softer voice. the reddening tips of his ears and his glossy eyes fills you with so much guilt. had you been too harsh?
“i.. i love you, okay? i love you so so much you mean the world to me and i’m sorry for being a sucky boyfriend but i can promise you i’ll be better. just don’t be done with me, please..?” his shaking hand takes hold of your fingers and you swear your heart almost implodes from the aching remorse.
“i’m sorry…” you whisper out, taking hold of his hand and squeezing it. “i- i shouldn’t have been so mean.. i know you’re trying. i’m so so sorry. i was just so angry and.. yeah..” you look down at his hand intertwined with yours, all the rage from earlier boiled down. “i love you too.”
he doesn’t say anything at first, just pulls you into a hug despite the unruly heat. your arms wrap around his neck and your fingers tangle into his dark brown locks. a big sigh leaves his nose and you press a kiss to his neck.
“i really am sorry, y/n. just talk to me. talk to me and i am going to try my hardest to love you the way you deserve and be the best boyfriend.”
you pull away to meet his devoted gaze and you nod. “i forgive you. i’m also sorry for not being.. communicative.” a gentle smile graces his plump lips and he shakes his head. “it’s okay, pretty.”
“we’re gonna be the awesomest couple, trust, we just gotta be in it together.”
“for realz for realz.”
you both giggle at the silliness after such a heated moment, basking in the warmth of love and sunshine.

since the incident had somewhat killed the mood, you both decided to head home early while your friends spent the rest of the day on the beach. you rode home with jake and spent the evening there instead.
you knock on the front door and wait for either one of his siblings or his parents to open the door. jake stands behind you with his chin rested atop your head, hands on your arms.
your face brightens to see the door opened by his little brother, sean. “hi sean!”
“y/n!!” he rushes to step out of the doorway and hug you, in which you return happily. you pull away and ruffle the small boy’s hair,“awee, i missed you baby!” “hehe i missed you too!!”
jake watches the whole exchange with the biggest smile a person could have. he loved nothing more than your relationship with his family and how much you fit in. “oh come on, you missed my girlfriend more than me?? your own brother!” he teases, and the little boy just sticks his tongue out and laughs.
you all make your way inside and once everything’s settled, jake brings you up to his room, but sean didn’t seem to want to leave you two alone. he’d followed you guys up the stairs, through the hallway, and into jake’s room. you thought it was funny, but jake seemed a little annoyed by it.
“sean, can you let me and y/n have some alone time? we’ll come hang out once dinner is ready, okay?” he proposes gently, but sean didn’t budge. “but whyyyy? what are you guys even going to do? dinner is so far from nowww.” he starts to whine a little at being told to go away.
jake grins cheekily and raises his eyebrows, “are you sure you wanna know?” your jaw drops a little at his response and you give his cheek a small smack. “jake!” you scoff and roll your eyes, yet blush a little at his antics. you decide to try your hand at getting sean to leave for the time being.
“sean, if you let me hang out with jake for a little bit we can play roblox later! and i can make the ice cream cookie sandwiches for dessert.” his eyes lit up at the offer, it was much more persuasive than jake’s. “okay!” he smiles and gives you a kiss on the cheek before scrambling off the bed and running back downstairs, probably going to tell his parents about the exciting night ahead of him.
you turn to jake with a smug smile since you won his brother over instead of him. “ha. i’m better than you.” “oh shut up.” he retorts back with an eye roll. you just laugh to yourself and cuddle up to his chest.
the comfortable silence allows for clear thinking, and while you’re recounting the day you had you remember—jake said “i love you.” and you did too! you could barely take it in in the moment, but now it was the perfect time to bring it up.
“baby?” “hmm?” you poked his cheek so he’d open his eyes and look at you while you spoke. “i remember earlier you told me a little something. something along the lines of.. l-o-v-e, perhaps?” you smile at the memory and butterflies fill your stomach as quick as red colors your cheeks. jake’s flushed too, and he couldn’t hide the smitten grin on his face. “mmm, maybe~. but you said you love me tooooo hehe.”
your eyes lock and you fall in love with him all over again—his messy hair, doe eyes, plump lips— all of it. you find yourselves leaning in to each other and your lips connect. his fingers rub along your thigh and your hand lies on his neck, deepening the kiss. he pulls you as close as possible, tugging your waist towards him.
jake’s kisses trail down to your neck where he leaves a small, unnoticeable hickey where your birthmark is. a sigh leaves you at his loving touch and you hug his head tighter into you.
he pulls away so he can rest his head comfortably in the crook of your neck, and his arms snake around your torso. you press tiny pecks on his temple and rest your forehead against his.
“i love you.” your words are soft, giddy, and utterly honest. you feel him smiling into the skin of your shoulder, shy at the declaration as if you both hadn’t said it already. “mm, i love you more, pretty.”
and so there you both fell asleep, tangled in each others arms that still smelled faintly of sunscreen, warmth brimming on uncomfortable, and with a love stronger than before.
that is, until you’re awoken by an all too eager sean.
