Henry almost has to physically drag Shawn away to get him to go work on a case because “Gus is the one who has time off work. Not you”

And Gus is thinking that his ‘vacation’ is really about to begin now that Shawn isn’t hovering over him anymore but every other scene in the episode has Gus trying to go about normal every day things when Shawn is just suddenly there.

Buying groceries? He’s the cashier

Going out to eat? He’s the out of uniform waiter that’s been wiping down the table behind Gus for the past 10 minutes

Driving his car? He’s had the same obvious tail for the past 15 minutes

Listening to music on the radio? Gus has no idea how he did it but somehow during one of the breaks there’s a message on his favorite channel telling Gus specifically to take things easy.

They can’t have Sherlock without his Watson so these moments are spent debriefing Gus on the case but it does also have moments of Shawn being concerned but also like, “why do you wanna be away from me while ur in a vulnerable state. is our friendship falling apart. do u not like me.”

What I think would be a really funny visual is the transitions between scenes with Shawn and the SBPD and him with Gus.

Lassie is busy examining the body when Shawn has an epiphany and when he turns around to talk to him the psychic has just vanished entirely. Completely gone without a trace and no one saw it happen.

And this trend just happens every time he needs to go to Gus; he just vanishes. It even happens to Henry too somehow and he’s like “?? I never taught him that how did he do that”

So. Imagine dozens of other teenage girls, being held against their will and brainwashed in Utah, seeing these billboards and going, "huh. I'm having a complicated emotional reaction to all of this. It's possible that I might unpack that in two to three decades."

Both of these situations arise from the same societal attitudes. This guy wanted a teenage girl to be trapped with him and unable to leave, regardless of her feelings on the matter, and for her to act a certain way and comply with his desires. He took her from her home and forced her to be somewhere she did not want to be and would not let her go, and he tried to turn her into a different thing. The difference in societal reactions to when one specific, unauthorized guy does this, compared to when someone's parents pay a fancy sounding institution to do it for them, tells you a lot about how we think about the autonomy of teenage girls.

In Utah, the reason these types of institutions are allowed is because their youth rights laws are abysmal even compared to the rest of the US. Children aren't people, they're the property of their parents. Elizabeth Smart's parents didn't want her to be kidnapped, so it was bad. Our parents did want us to be kidnapped, so it was fine.
