I'll admit, my instinct was to treat it as a simple test of "ooh do you trust your companion enough, will you lie to him and hide what you know from him will you break the stalemate as a Good Thing". When it's. So much more uncomfortable (good) than that. You are accompanying your companion to the place of his greatest loss, you see him grow more and more manic in that space until his restless fear is tangible to even you, who haven't known him for that long at all. You realize the only things he holds sacred in this world are buried in this place. You distract him and lie to him. Behind his back you root through the mire and horror of his lost innocence, his grief and terror, his darkest hours, and you find what you need. Usually, a revelation like this feels like a reward, a benefice, a cathartic release of truth, the progression of a bond. But this isn't that. The grime of a premature truth sticks to you. It is inescapable. You took something you had to, but was not given to you. You can't be blamed for your reasoning but it doesn't wash the grime from you.
This is not a question of honesty. Honesty in fact is out of the question. This is the story forcing a blade into your hand and guiding it right over his heart and asking you to stay there. For weeks and months as you befriend him/fall in love with him. The question is not will you be honest with him and tell him you are poised to destroy him. The question is can you stand it? You will sink the blade or you won't. There is no unknowing. You cannot go back to a time where you did not have this blade in your hand. And its just. So good.
