Hurray for Simpletons

After a lot of you showed interest, we are pleased to welcome you to our (first) mini event to celebrate Inktober and Halloween! Unlike the winter event, there will be no exchanging of gifts and no sign-ups required. Come join the fun if you wish to!

There are two main activities for this event. Feel free to do either of them or both. Show off your creativity by posting your creations throughout the month of October and tagging this blog. Your creations will be showcased on the 31st. Option A: Design your own Amalgamate. The Amalgamates are always deserving of more love. You may use existing monster designs or create monster types of your own. Be sure to give your new Amalgamate friend a name too!

Option B: Design costumes for the monsters to wear at a Halloween party. Let’s see who wore it best. You can also show the process of making the costumes. After all, the process is part of the fun!

For the 4th anniversary, I thought I’d go back to an older piece of mine. If you look at the first pieces I posted on this site, one of them is a desktop wallpaper. I drew it in 2016, and I’ve been doing a LOT of improvement since then, so I figured it was time to give it the new coat of paint it deserves.

Do you design a lot of characters living in not-modern eras and you’re tired of combing through google for the perfect outfit references? Well I got good news for you kiddo, this website has you covered! Originally @modmad made a post about it, but her link stopped working and I managed to fix it, so here’s a new post. Basically, this is a costume rental website for plays and stage shows and what not, they have outfits for several different decades from medieval to the 1980s. LOOK AT THIS SELECTION:

It’s not a contest to see who can get by without them. It’s not cheating to look at a thing in order to know what the thing looks like.

USING REFERENCES FOR ART IS NOT ‘CHEATING’!!!

If you can draw/paint without references, great!  But if you need to use them, and feel that your art can be bettered by using references, please, use them!  This is one of the biggest tips I can give to artists, is USE REFERENCES! 

Anyone who would dare to attack someone for using references after ‘recognizing a pose’ is a dipshit, who doesn’t know a thing about art.

You can even use other artists work, it’s just a matter of respecting the artist. Just be very careful and ASK (if you can) before posting any art you made that directly references an artists work. If you cannot contact them, let people know or link to the reference you used. Do not claim the work is your own or let people assume it by not saying anything at all-that’s where the call out culture is. Emulating master works was REQUIRED for half my undergrad classes in painting- and my original work was so much better because I studied someone with more experience and knowledge of the craft.

Unless you have a very good grasp on your subject matter trying to draw everything from memory is just going to hinder and frustrate you.

Study the masters.

Study real life.

Practice. Practice. Practice.

IT ISN’T CHEATING
