Used to be that nobody came around Miss Robichaux's Academy. The manor-turned-witch-school stayed tucked away behind its gates and gardens, within New Orleans even as it stood apart. 

Now that Cordelia Goode was the Supreme and had taken the coven public, though, foot traffic around the place was near-nonstop. New students were pouring in from all over the country, but that wasn't all: people were coming from all over just, it seemed, to get a look at the place--cameras and cell phones in hand to snap photos, shouting, "Hey, is all this for real?" through the gates when Queenie or Zoe or Miss Cordelia herself were outside. 

That part, Queenie thought as she saw the figure of a man approaching, is gettin' old as hell.

Going to hell and back shouldn't have been this easy. But it was becoming a near-nightly routine for Queenie, who lay on her bed, arms crossed over her chest, reciting the Descensum incantation she'd long since memorized. Easy as breathing. 

"Whatchoo doin', girl? Gimme the box of chicken. Today, please?" Chicken. Pans and pans of it spread out before her, a leg clutched in a pair of tongs she suddenly held and a half-full box in her other hand. The greasy fast-food smell that clung to her clothes and skin and hair, so cloying she could hardly breathe. Her manager yelling from the front of the house. "Watch the counter. I'm goin' on break, okay?"

Hell played on a loop; same script every time she showed up. Used to be jarring, but now it was just getting old. 

She didn't watch the counter, with its endless stream of angry, abusive customers. Hadn't done that in a long time. No, soon as the manager was gone, she followed, tearing off that stupid-ass Chubbie's apron and making a run for the back door before it slammed shut and trapped her inside.

There were other hells than her own, and she'd found she could walk in them. Not long--the same get back home before sunrise rules applied no matter whose little corner of the afterlife you were in--but it was possible. Queenie spent these nights looking. For people who'd gone too soon. People she wanted to speak to--apologize to, mostly, for not getting to say goodbye or for having a hand in their ends. For Nan, for Marie, for--

"Mr. Crenley, she did it again!" Queenie'd stepped into a classroom and almost immediately missed the chicken-shack smell--this place stank of formaldehyde. Kids sat in pairs at rows and rows of lab tables, silently cutting into frogs and pausing to fill answers in on worksheets nearby.

Silently, except for one group at the back. A boy, yelling his fool head off about his lab partner being a freak, a teacher raising his voice ("If you won't dissect a dead frog, you'll dissect a live one!") and pressing a scalpel into the hand of...

A lady years older and a head taller than the other kids there, draped in shawls and bawling, red-rimmed eyes dripping tears like faucets.
