I started this blog to write about my personal life and my mental illness, but honestly now all I want to blog about is Yuri On Ice.Ā
My girlfriendās relative is finally gone and we can all relax a little bit. Iām still feeling pretty stressed though. I know Iāve been dissociating a lot. I have large chunks of time that are outright missing, and then other chunks of time where I can remember what happened but I feel very detached from the memory as if it all happened to someone else.Ā
Iāve been getting really severe headaches and migraines for the last week and a half. Iām sure itās stress causing them, but I canāt seem to relax.Ā
I have an appointment with a counselor tomorrow. Thanks to insurance bureaucracy this is just a gatekeeper style assessment appointment to determine my diagnosis and treatment needs. It seems ridiculous that I need to go through this when Iāve had mental health diagnoses on my medical records since I was eleven.Ā

Iām so ready for this visit to be over. My girlfriendās grandmother is driving us both crazy. Sheās stressing us out so much that itās making us physically sick. My blood pressure is really high and my girlfriend is sick to her stomach.Ā
Iām embarrassed about it because it seems silly, but one of my triggers is broken fingernails. Itās not that they gross me out or that they make me cringe. Itās that the sight of them, or even having them described to me will cause me to have a panic attack.Ā
Yesterday, we were all in the car together and my girlfriendās grandmother started going on and on about her broken fingernail. (Just remembering this is making me feel panicky).Ā
I said,Ā āPlease stop. Iām sorry, I know this is silly, but I have a phobia. Please donāt talk about your broken nail anymore.āĀ
She ignored me, kept talking about it, and then shoved it in my face.Ā
I was in tears by the time we finally parked the car and I was able to get out.Ā
She did it again today. I almost feel like sheās doing it on purpose.Ā

My parents fought a lot when I was a kid.Ā
Every time they had a big fight, my dad would pack a suitcase, take it out to the car, and leave. He always came back, but what I learned was that conflict is dangerous, conflict drives people apart, and relationships are fragile.Ā
Eventually my parents divorced and my mother remarried. Things were different in her new relationship. This time she was the one who packed the suitcase.Ā
I grew up believing that relationships were fragile. Something as small as an unpaid bill or a dead car battery could be enough to destroy everything. Every fight caused another crack in their relationship. They loved each other a little less after each fight.Ā
I carried these lessons into my first relationship where I put up with horrible things because Iād learned that relationships were too fragile to survive even small conflicts. The idea of saying,Ā āIt hurts me when you do thatā was unthinkable.Ā
My girlfriend and I have been together for five years now and every time there is conflict in our lives, we grow stronger. Every time we deal with hardships, it pushes us closer together.Ā
Weāre at a place in our lives where I feel grateful for the difficulties we face, because we come out stronger in the end.Ā
Neither of us even own a suitcase.Ā
what people think losing time is like:
coming back to find blood on your hands and a corpse in your freezer.
what losing time is really like:
coming back to Boulevard of Broken Dreams blasting from your laptop and an open google search for Strawberry Shortcake
this is the realest thing Iāve read in a while

One of my girlfriendās relatives is visiting and she keeps apologizing for how much itās stressing me out, but honestly it just makes me love her more.Ā
It reminds me that we both came from rough places. We both came from families that didnāt communicate honestly or respect one another. Weāre both trauma survivors who grew up without examples of what a healthy relationship looks like.Ā
And yet here we are, with a healthy relationship and a (relatively) stable life.
I donāt tell her I love her often enough. I know thatās a holdover from my own trauma. Itās something I need to work on.Ā
