Tell that to the people working multiple minimum wage jobs, still unable to afford a decent life for themselves and their families.

First, I’m going to paint the picture of who is actually paid a minimum wage and compare it to the narrative that is presented above which is not accurate to reality but also is meaningless in terms of policy prescriptions. Next, I’ll present the detrimental effects of the minimum wage and that if your concern is genuine, you too would oppose taking actions to maintain price floors on labor. 

Years ago, I made minimum wage so I’m aware of how difficult it can be to pay for anything, but the key point to remember was, at the time, I wasn’t the sole income provider of the household. Household income is an economic term which means the gross income of all members of a household (over ae 15), regardless of relation.

The largest age bracket is ages 16-24, accounting for 45.4% of workers paid at or below minimum wage (below would be workers like waiters or waitresses). Of the remaining the largest age bracket are ages 25-34 at 24.4% of minimum wage workers. The remaining quarter of minimum wage workers fall into all other ages. Keep in mind, this isn’t all hourly workers these are all sub-sections of the 2.7% of hourly workers paid minimum wage not including tips, not even all workers, just hourly workers(1).

This data only tells us about individual income, not the big picture. How many of these workers are unable to afford a decent living and if the situation is bleak, how long are they in that situation?

Of minimum wage workers, only 4% are single-parents working full-time(2). While 85% of minimum wage workers are not sole-income providers(3).The vast majority of people who work minimum wage will be earning more within one year(4) and those tend to be people who work more hours. Clearly, the concept that minimum wage jobs are entry-level jobs still holds true as more than half of Americans started at minimum wage (5).

I’m not here to argue who “deserves” and who does not but to challenge the pessimistic and, frankly, an insulting narrative of minimum wage workers needing the government to save them.

The phrase “livable” is so often associated with raising the minimum wage which absolutely will not help the workers it is intended to help. A study by the Employment Policies Institute estimated job losses of a $9.80 minimum wage would be between 256,200 to 768,600 jobs (6).  A $15 an hour wage that is so often floated would be catastrophic.

The premise behind the job losses is that productivity from these jobs can no longer be justified at the higher cost to the employer, it doesn’t always lead to job loss as it often does, but can lead to lost hours or even reduced breaks.

Everyone wants to help those just entering the economy and those struggling to make ends meet, but a minimum wage isn’t the way to do it.

Your data sited from the Employment Policy Institute is also invalid. This one is especially funny because it’s run by the restaurant industry which THRIVES off underpaying servers. Coincidence? Of course not (Source).

As I review your sources, I find myself LOLing harder and harder with each. So your article from Carrington Fallick is from 2001 and the data they discuss is from 1979. That’s 40 years old.

EPI papers all tend to cite another paper put out by the CBO which suggested a 10.10 minimum wage would reduce employment by 500k jobs. 

The data from Carrington and Fallick is multi-generational data collected over time. That means data collection started in 1979. They tracked individuals in their careers over time, that is the nature of that data. Again, if you actually read any of this you would realize that quality.
