I think that misogynistic human misconceptions of all mothers selflessly loving their offspring and always knowing the perfect thing to do for them bleeds into a lot of animal rights bullshit. You see this a lot in opposition to pet spay aborts (‘my pregnant cat got depressed after they killed her unborn babies’) and criticisms of separating calves and piglets from their mothers’ in certain animal agriculture scenarios. Most animals are like “fuck they kids” if rearing their offspring is the least bit convenient for them, the situation is not ideal or the wild blows the wrong way. They’re hardwired to survive as individuals and the effort of rearing offspring to maturity is secondary to that goal.

ARAs will be like “mother cows cry out in grief when separated from their babies” and cows will be like ‘vibes are off. this one smells wrong. think I’m just going to keep attacking it every time it tries to nurse from me’.

Yeah. I think it’s interesting that cats are either the best moms ever and willing to run into burning buildings to save their kittens and adopt/nurse anything vaguely kitten shaped OR the worst moms ever and ready to abandon their kittens at the earliest possible convenience and possibly eat them if they’re stressed. It’s highly dependent on the situation the cat is in AND the individual cat. ‘Motherly instinct’ is not innate and universal in any species.
