1. Villain doesn't trust Hero, yet they are hurt and not sleeping due to the fact about being scared. But when Hero presents them the needle, they freak out. If they sleep, Hero could do who knows what with them. As they try to fend off any attack with said daunting needle, Hero gets them with it. They slump forward, crying, as Hero holds them.

Or alternative, Hero doesn't comfort them and forces Villain to endure their fear as unconsciousness looms over them.

2. Villain has been running and hiding for weeks, neglecting sleep and food. The heroes are getting tired as well and very agitated. Their intial plan was to help Villain with their sickness, but it quickly escalated. The team ends having to use a tranq gun to capture and bring Villain to safety.

3. Villain is in so much agony that even sleep won't take them. They writhe on the couch, table, bed as the caretaker cleans their wounds. Eventually, the distress and delirium gets to much that the caretaker to forced to give them a sedative.

4. Villain needs surgery, but of course the procedure is done at Hero's base. They prep the IV as Villain watches in anticipation as the anesthesia slips into their veins. Just as the world blinks out of existence, Hero squeezes their hand.

5. Villain is about to face off the greatest evil that not even Supervillain can defeat. Supervillain watches as Villain trains and preps for the fight, but when the day comes, their worry gets too great. They sneak up behind Villain and plunge the needle into their neck. They fall into Supervillain's grip. When they are restrained to the bed, Supervillain faces off instead.

Redemption by amnesia - the villain forgetting their crimes. They begin living a normal life, or possibly even forge a new path of virtue. They don’t even understand why the heroes keep so close to them, why everyone gives them dirty looks. Or maybe they were told their past and have to live with a guilt they can’t quite fully feel.

Redemption by empathetic experience - maybe the villain was young when they started down the wrong path. They learned the worst from evil mentors/parents, and it isn’t until they have an experience that shatters their paradigm that they realize they can/should be different. Usually these experiences humanize the people around the villain, and villain, feeling empathy, decides to change.

Redemption by de-aging - the villain reverting back to a younger age. Even if they remember what they’ve done, the heroes would likely refuse to kill them. And the younger they are, the less likely they’d face any punishment.

Redemption by whump - the villain facing unbalanced retribution. Their torture is too much for the heroes to bear. “They don’t deserve this.” The villain being taken care of in a way that changes their whole relationship with the heroes. They can’t go back to living the way they did before.

Redemption by “death” - the villain being sentenced to death and actually dying. By some means, magical or scientific, they come back to life. They technically satisfied the sentence and can carry on living, however that may go. Or it was done in secret, and they get a second chance living in anonymity.

Redemption by common enemy - “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” The villain and hero team up to stop a bigger, worse threat. Even though villain has done terrible things in the past, the hero can’t kill or hurt them now, not right after they helped.

Redemption by family - nothing is more humanizing than a villain that cares about their family (and vice versa), and the hero can’t let villain die while their child is watching. Also looks like a brother, a mother stepping in when villain needs them most. Advocating for them, believing in them when no one else would.

they take a step towards whumpee, trying to appear as non-threatening as possible. whumpee seems to freeze for a second, the line of their posture tense and coiled— an attempt to shrink within oneself, bracing for something and hiding from something alike.

caretaker gently pulls the sweater over whumpee's head, guiding their stick-thin arms into the soft fabric as whumpee stays still and quiet throughout the process, looking at them with huge, unblinking eyes.

"there," caretaker says, gently patting whumpee on their arms as they step away. "better?"

whumpee blinks. a weak protest, "you need that," as they fidget with the sleeves. they can't bring themself to remove it. it's soft and filled with cartaker's warmth.

caretaker shakes their head, carding their fingers through whumpee's hair in an attempt to straighten it back.

Living Weapon Whumpee is a highly efficient killer. Obedient and emotionless to an almost uncanny degree. It makes sense that the team assumed they were anything but human.

Or, perhaps Handler lied to them, aware that the team (softer than most in the business) wouldn’t take kindly just yet to finding out how the organisation truly worked.

Because of this, nobody on the team particularly cares for Weapon. It’s an unthinking robot, nobody’ll mind if someone is slightly rude to it or if they let it take as many hits as necessary for the mission.

But then it bleeds.

Bleeds like a robot certainly shouldn’t, chokes on the scarlet like it needs oxygen to breathe. And that terrifies the entire team.

The weapon clearly influenced by Handler to obey anything mindlessly, the weapon they’ve been letting take blows like it can easily be replaced, the weapon they’ve been harshly ordering around, has been a thinking, feeling human this whole time.

Caretaker and the team are disgusted at Handler and at themselves for not realising it sooner. Their attitude towards the weapon changes, offering pain meds and comfort, and Whumpee can’t understand it at all. Weren’t they doing a good job? Didn’t the team see them as a good weapon anymore?

Or, the alternative:

Mechanical Whumpee is deceptively human. Maybe it’s in their program to appear as human as possible.

The team and Caretaker bond well with Whumpee, considering them a very close friend who they’re honoured to fight alongside.

But then Whumpee gets injured during a fight, or perhaps catches a virus, and the team are in shock because they were never a human in the first place.

Whumpee doesn’t understand why everyone is mad. They don’t understand why anyone feels anything, emotions are so unfamiliar to them that they can’t comprehend that the team sees them as less of a companion now that their mechanical innards are revealed.

Or, they know why. And that’s why they hid it. Maybe Whumpee was something human before this, before they’d been repaired and slowly replaced until nothing original remained. And they’d been nothing but ashamed of that.

I would like a, uh, a well dressed man screaming and crying on the ground, begging for his life. Extra sobbing. Make sure he’s disheveled.

Also it’s my birthday— I mean my friend’s birthday here and I’m sure they’d like the birthday surprise for the month.

Just the

hero stands up and puts an arm out to support them, "you're in no condition-"

Bonus points if he’s kneeling next to his boss.

Bonus bonus points if he’s weaker than his boss so the entire thing of him getting on his knees is just to humiliate him.
