Thereâs this old myth about Doctor Who that says every companion only exists to scream and be saved (Classic Who) or serve as an exposition tool (NuWho), and while thereâs some true to that, I think itâs a little reductionist and fails to account for the relationship between the Doctor and their companions, which changes very often and is key to the success of the show and whatever Doctor is on the screen, so I came up with this:
I think, historically, you can definitely organize Doctor Who companions and their function on the show on a three-headed spectrum of 1. Has the emotional intelligence the Doctor lacks, 2. is incredibly competent in their field, which makes them very valuable when shit goes down, and 3. just loves the absolute shit out of the Doctor and believes in them more than anything. Every companion has some level of those three qualities (specially 3) but they place on different points on that spectrum depending on the character and what each Doctor needs out of their companions and what works best them.
So for example you have the prototypical archetypal companions of each side of that spectrum
Type 1 are characters like Rory, Donna, Jo Grant, who are usually there to remind the Doctor of what is like to not be a Time Lord, that they have the responsibility to help people and to care, and, ultimately, ground the Doctor..
Type 2 have some of most of the heavily underrated companions like Martha and Zoe Heriot, and some recognized to be the best ever like Sarah Jane, Jack, Ace⌠these often do not need the Doctor to get shit done and have many stories in which they are on their own. Theyâre very good fighters or extremely intelligent or both, and curiously I found that this archetype happened a lot more in classic who then it does in nuwho.
And, finally, Type 3, who are ones who are better and make the Doctor better because of their special bond. I donât think any companion is a better example of that than Amy, but thereâs also characters like Peri Brown, Jamie McCrimmon and Rose Tyler.
These also somewhat reflect the roles of the 3 original companions: Barbara (Type 1), Ian (Type 2) and Susan (Type 3).
Of course these characters arenât set to a specific role and they can develop and grow, they might even change where they place depending on the season or the Doctor theyâre with. Some might even be prototypical of two different types, like Yaz (2 & 3), or Victoria (1 & 3) or Clara (arguably all 3). But overall I think this is a good baseline to understanding how companions actually work on Doctor Who.
So if you put everything on a graphic, you end up with something like this (NuWho only), which is definitely not entirely accurate and is up to interpretation and discussion, but is a good illustration of what I mean.
I donât think any type of companion is necessarily better than the other but I do think thereâs some relevant observations that can be taken from this, like 3 out of the 5 white men to have been companions in NuWho serving as a morality guide for the Doctor, or the argument that the reason why Clara is so controversial is because she fluctuates so much inside this spectrum, going from genius (Asylum), to the Doctorâs emotional and moral guide (Day of the Doctor, series 8), to the Doctorâs best friend ever (series 9) - I say this a big fan. I also didnât get into how effective each companion is in their roles, which is definitely a big factor, but itâs also a lot more subjective, so Iâm not touching that. Thereâs not value placed here, itâs just a simple interpretation of the text.
Anyway, this isnât a perfect system, and maybe thereâs more to be added or taken from this, but Iâve spent a lot of time thinking about this and I do think it has some merits. At the very least itâs a lot better than the simplification of âscreams for the doctor or notâ.
Coming back to update this with 15th's companions, don't mind me

Hey there! As you might know if you follow this blog, my name is Liz. I've made it very clear that this blog and my commissions / Payhip store are my only source of income. I'm partially disabled and living in a household that exacerbates said disabilities, along with subjecting me to abuse.
Being unable to be employed currently means that I'm also unable to get insurance for the dental care I need, and unfortunately, the only dentist in my area that will work with me due to allergies and special needs regarding my disability is rather expensive. I'm forced to pay out of pocket for medically necessary work that will drastically improve my quality of life.
This is where I humbly ask for help from the online community, and also understand that this is a difficult time for all of us. If you don't feel comfortable donating, please take a look at my commission prices, or my Payhip store. If you truly are unable to help monetarily, please give this a reblog and share around as much as possible. Every little bit helps, even exposure!
The treatment plan I've been quoted totals around $3500, and I currently have $600 saved. Any excess I receive will go towards prescriptions after procedures including antibiotics, pain medications, and sinus medications. Anything beyond that will simply go into my savings in case of other emergencies.
For more in depth information about the care, I need:
All but two of my teeth extracted on the upper half
Two wisdom teeth extracted from my right side, as well as a molar on the bottom half
3 to 4 fillings
Oral surgery to remove a tooth growing in on the roof of my mouth
Impressions for dentures
And the actual partial dentures.
This care will help improve my quality of life in the amount of pain I deal with on a day to day basis, as well as allow my TMJ disorder to begin to heal - due to being able to eat properly with the dentures.

a few reminders because iâm tired and angry
fandom is a hobby, not a form of activism
adult women arenât inherently creepy for being in fandom and having hobbies apart from raising babies and doing taxes
the vast majority of people pushing back against the worrying trend of instigating harassment over fictional characters and relationships arenât incest supporters or pedophiles, actually
liking a m/f ship doesnât make someone a dirty heterosexual invading your space
preferring gay ships doesnât make you ââwokeââ and good
no one owes you a disclaimer that they are a good person who recognizes that their favorite fictional villainâs actions are evil and that they donât condone those actions irl
liking a fictional villain is in no way comparable to advocating abuse/murder/genocide/etc and youâre a fucking idiot if you believe that
just because a woman is attracted to a fictional villain doesnât mean sheâs promoting toxic relationships or going to end up in a toxic relationship. assuming women canât tell fiction and reality apart stinks of internalized misogynyÂ
some randoâs a/b/o fanfics have none of the level of influence that popular tv shows and movies spreading propaganda have
no one owes you a detailed description of their traumas and mental health problems
abusive relationships are not the same as enemies to lovers ships
yâall need to chill the fuck out over people, relationships, actions and events that donât actually exist and learn how to enjoy and discuss them like normal people
fandom is a hobby, not a form of activism

when u exit hyperfocus mode and ur immediately hit with every status effect ever
IâI mean, I didnât hear anything.
So âqueerâ isnât just an identity thatâs broadly inclusive because, I donât know, we like big parties. Thereâs actually an underlying ethic, a queer theory, that has political implications.
Its name reclaims a slur because the point is to say, âI am different, but thatâs not a bad thing.â The queer movement is about upholding the right of all people to deviate from an oppressive cisgender, heterosexual, patriarchal norm. Broadening the spectrum of acceptable diversity; questioning and dismantling the social pressures that police and punish deviance. Changing not just our own lives, but how our entire society thinks about sex and gender.
Thatâs why âqueerâ embraces so many different groups. Itâs not trying to erase their differences, but to try to coherently understand the complex overlapping pressures that affect each of them, and to extend our reach beyond the LGBT+ community. Itâs about the right of lesbians to live without men and the right of trans and nonbinary people to be who they are, the right of asexuals to define for themselves whatâs significant in their lives, the right of straight men to be vulnerable and emotional and nonviolent. When the great queering project is done, you will see the changes everywhere, not just in small LGBT+ enclaves.
Itâs recognizing that something that harms or oppresses one of us is pretty likely to harm all of us, so we all benefit from taking it down together.

being ace and still interested in the idea of sex in the context of storytelling and writing is so wild because I can talk for hours about different kinks and how they work with bdsm or outside of it and I have all this knowledge accumulated and absolutely no desire to ever actually do any of it myself
