Hey alll! Quick PSA and acknowledgment of my error: while I thought I was helping out this little friend I was actually informed by someone who works with horseshoe crab nesting that it’s best to leave them be where they are (they could be laying eggs/ it’s best to just not move them in general). I also think someone in the comments of this post that horseshoe crabs bury themselves to stay moist!

All in all I just wanted to share this info because I think it’s important to stay open minded and learn from your mistakes! Knowledge is power!

So here is some context as to how horseshoe crabs spawn! Basically a group of males (which are typically smaller than the females) are attracted to one female. The eggs the female carries are then fertilized externally and deposited into the sand where animals will eat them up yum yum.

I would also like to add how beneficial marsh lands are, not just to different bird species, but to all sorts of wildlife! Horseshoe crabs will use these important wetlands to mate and lay eggs. These eggs will hatch the new generation of horseshoe crabs, and will feed migratory birds on their travels.
