Hello welcome to my first shitty Sam Look Outside analysis post. First of many. I hope. This one's about Meat World apartment 33 and how the remade cursed give us insight into Sam's mental health
First of all I LOVE YOU MEAT WORLD APARTMENT 33 AUGHGUGHAG IT MADE ME FALL EVEN MORE IN LOVE WITH SAM'S CHARACTER
I really like how some of the remade cursed's lines can be read as Sam's own thinking process, especially Confusion and Stretchface's. Yes, they mean what they say in the most literal way possible, time flows slower and they're confined there, but but but what!!! Has!!! Sam been doing anyway???
"[He sleeps] for a long time" (Confusion) because "1 minute is 23 [there]" (Stretchface), but really, what has Sam been doing all this time at home? When was the last time he got out of his apartment? He doesn't even change when going to bed. His house is a mess, as Papineau points out. I don't find hard to imagine Sam barely having the will to get out of bed, to be fair. And Confusion talks about all the work Sam's supposed to do too! He's supposed to do something, anything, but he can't!!!!
Stretchface tells us more about his struggles. "What is it this time? Brushing your teeth? Shower? Something else?" (to me this phrasing implies that Sam kind of does one thing or the other. Doing everything's too much) again because they watch Sam, but it's also a very real thought someone struggling with self-care would have (source: me)
Then, Spine my beloved. I see Spine as a representation of Sam's depression as a whole. Always following him. They don't have anything but each other. She tells him he'll be happier if he stays with her. Which. In my mind. Is a metaphor for suicide. Just give up. Let her win. She doesn't do it out of maliciousness, she genuinely thinks it'd be the best for him. It'll hurt, but only for a moment... Kind of like when Sam accepts her offer to be remade. Hm.
Sidenote I really like Spine being referred to with she/her pronouns. First of all women win, second of all it makes me think it's... I don't want to say intentional... A shrewd choice, yeah. You know what other noun alongside spine is feminine in French? Eyup, depression I'm definitely reading too much into it
In my first run I killed Spine and I kind of consequentially now hc Sam killing her out of desperation. He didn't want to kill her, he regrets it, but, let's say her words were hitting a little too close to home. He wanted her to cut it off, because he's aware of his own issues... But the moment someone starts spelling them to his face he gets worked up (hello projection centre here)
