In the UK, Boris Johnson’s Conservative Government recently announced a ‘war on obesity’. Is it a scapegoat for the governments handling of the COVID-19 crisis? A well-meaning att…
Perfect morning waves by Mitchellpettigrew
Well it sure has been a hot minute! Hey Instagram 👋🏻 What a whirlwind the past couple of months have been. To cut a long story short- after my assessment with my local ED team, referrals for inpatient were sent out & I was admitted to the Phoenix Wing at St Ann’s hospital the following week, where I’ve been serving time/in treatment until this past Saturday when I self-discharged. I’ll save the lengthy rant about the treatment I experienced & how despairing I am that adult treatment is utterly appalling, for another post! But what I will say, is that I not only had the biggest reality check of my life, met some truly incredible, awe-inspiring people, but I committed to going all in with my recovery. For me, that means relinquishing all control over food & putting all my trust in my parents. Not forever, no, but for a while. Me taking control of my food before I’ve been truly ready is what has led to countless past relapses- something that cannot, & will not happen again. So I am home. No longer stuck inside a hospital ward that ultimately enabled my eating disorder to remain comfortable and safe. I am home & being challenged left, right & centre. Anxious? Yep. Body image feeling worse by the minute? Pretty much. Next step? Eat anyway. Rest anyway. Sit with the discomfort. The alternative? Having committed 110%, I do not see there being an alternative. My option is staying the path of recovery, regardless of any discomfort and body image woes. Because my gosh, nothing could be worse than sitting in a clinical hospital bedroom, sobbing on FaceTime to parents after being threatened with sectioning if I attempt to go to graduation; nothing could be worse than spending the next few decades going in & out of a clinic, having to ask staff to open the door for the toilet, eating barely-edible NHS meals, being stuck inside a locked ward whilst the rest of the world carries on living. No. Nope. Nada. I wish it hadn’t taken the experience at St Ann’s to switch my mindset so drastically. I wish I could have gone to my graduation. But I am grateful to have the chance to recover now, & excited for a future without anorexia 😌♥️ (at Magnum Pleasure Store, 11-13 Duke of York Square) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1om1NbHS0c2bTqkKpLwkW0UxVa_cmsNtMHK7Q0/?igshid=131kglnnt7ocn

Day 2
With the first full-day of challenging my disorder and attempting recovery complete, I thought with day 2 I’d throw in an old photo to both remind myself that there was an ‘Erin’ before anorexia, and that there is life beyond this illness.
It has been an incredibly difficult 30 or so hours, but I am so far on target to be ticking off day 2 as another behaviour-breaking day. After an emotionally-charged discussion with my Dad yesterday, he is definitely in a much cooler state today which is helpful. By the end of yesterday, I think he could see how I was taking charge with committing to breaking certain behaviours and that what I had spoken about earlier in the day wasn’t going to be merely ‘all talk no walk’.
Honestly, eating-disorder related challenges aside, I am finding one of the most difficult things to be the lack of any structure to my day.

Here, there and back again.
Oh hello, Instagram 📸 Long time, no speak. I only wish I could explain my absence was due to things going well, but things couldn’t be much worse than they are right now. I’m not going to have this be a super down-in-the-dumps post, but I want to get back to posting regularly for a while & thought it best to explain a little. Final year of uni was one heck of an endurance test- one I ultimately should not have signed up for, but regardless, is over. I suffered my worst relapse towards the end of March time, and am now facing an assessment for inpatient- possibly day patient. I am 22 years old and anorexia has been front and centre of my life since 14. With university over, I truly feel empty. I’ve isolated myself from most relationships, and as things stand, haven’t felt able to work on tackling this. My Dad is struggling with worry, and I’ve been honest with both mum and dad that I haven’t been managing. So, here we are. I have all the information & knowledge regarding recovery. I know that nutritional rehabilitation is key, and much of my brain fog & low mood is related to my current state. My motivation to change has just been completely gone. So, what’s next? My assessment is 2 weeks off & each day feels never-ending. I cannot afford to wait. I’ve wasted too much time already. Even though I feel lost & uncertain, tomorrow, I am making some very important changes. I am scared. But I cannot sit around feeling this awful until I’m either put in inpatient/day-patient, for fear of not being ‘sick-enough’ at the assessment. I’m done with that pathetic disordered-logic. I’m going to make changes now. Boy, this post is getting rather lengthy! I’ll quit here, but thank you for reading this jumbled ramble of mine. In the meantime, appreciate the New York bagel with cinnamon-walnut cream cheese I had on a rather tough trip last month 😌 https://www.instagram.com/p/Byn02hsHocprqB8yZUS_zRGSKPNNZlaJgkS0os0/?igshid=1gmos8tpoxy0y

If your recovery from a restrictive eating disorder involves a restrictive diet and a strict exercise routine, then I’d really strongly advise you to reconsider and reevaluate. Really.
What’s stopping you from letting it go? What are you scared of?
(personal)
Every once in a while, I like to take a look over the last three years & appreciate just how far I’ve come. Whilst there’s always room for debate in terms of whether or not it is possible to fully recover from an eating disorder (some believe that it’s something to be managed for the rest of your life, and others believe that leaving your ED behind forever is possible for everyone), I know in my heart that I’ve well and truly let my eating disorder go, and that I’m all the better for it.
Notice the language there; I’ve let my eating disorder go, not “my eating disorder eased its grip on me” (or something similar). Two of the most important things I realised during my recovery process were that a) my recovery was in my hands, and b) that I was not helpless. I realised that I needed to take a deep breath and start tackling my fears and anxieties head on, rather than sit around all day and do research and write diet plans for myself and plan the “perfect” recovery, yadda yadda yadda. No therapist had ever told me this (if anything, my therapists were of the “count your calories and weigh yourself religiously” variety); it was something I had to work out by myself. I had to really, really learn to let it all go.
It’s very important to keep asking yourself the following two questions: “Why does this matter?” and “What am I afraid of?”. Ask yourself these whenever you feel the slightest tinge of eating-disordered compulsive-anxiety panic coming on; ask yourself these until you’re blue in the face. Eventually, you will stumble across an uncomfortable truth, and that’s what you need to deal with long-term and manage for the rest of your life - not your weight or your calorie intake, believe me.
i’ve always felt like i needed an absolute goal, a direction in life, a motivation, to decide to give up my ED, to decide to try and live better.
it hit me, out of nowhere, that if i keep waiting for something like that, while simultaneously destroying myself, there’s a chance i may be far too weak and destroyed by the time i do come up with something.
of course, the negative voices in my head tell me that maybe there’s no such thing anyway, maybe you won’t even find something you care about enough, maybe you’re just not good enough, maybe you just should continue with the exact way you are. but i’d not only be giving up on the present me, but the future me as well.
and i really, really don’t like that. i don’t like the idea of destroying something that i have yet to even fully experience and hold, and cherish, in my hands, for myself.
i guess what i’m trying to say is that - it doesn’t matter if i don’t know what i want to do right now, if i don’t have a fixed goal or dream that i can actively pursue. the key idea is not destroying the likelihood of being able to pursue that at all, if it manifests in the future, by making sure i take care of the me that exists right now.
even if i’m so disgusted and opposed to preserving and loving myself right now, i need to do it for the me that will exist in five, ten, fifteen months, years. i need to do it for the me that i will be, that may suddenly have dreams and aspirations and wishes that the current me just cannot imagine.
