And this has been prevalent through season 2. Luz hasn't dealt with her own grief and pain over destroying the portal and being separated from her mother because she's either been helping other people with their problems or focusing on rebuilding the portal door. She's trying to work hard because in her mind breaking down and feeling bad won't make a new portal or get her back to her mom. She's focusing on this because if she doesn't she'll be stuck with all her grief and pain. It almost reminds me of Steven's arc in Steven Universe Future where he focuses on other people's problems to avoid his own.
