Forget Console Wars.
I am blaming PC players for all of this. We had PS3 with 256 mB ram that streamed game data from the Blu-Ray. Then PC players started paying for obscene amounts of memory and allowing Steam to rent them licenses so they could get extra frames. This all started with them and those Digital Foundry bros, chirping about resolution and frames as if an entire generation of kids didnt play and beat Star Fox on the SNES, with the stutter.
Luckily I have a giant backlog of Switch carts and board games to get to. Unless PC players find a way to retroactively ruin that. Ugh, they probably would start using some type of board game rental service because it had limited edition pieces.
As someone that has children and is around other people's children:
The internet is a largely unregulated space that isn't public. It is private. The ISP, the root servers, the websites are all private. Thus the space is manipulated to present whatever reality the providers want you to consume. The more time a child spends on the internet, the more biased their sense of reality becomes. COPPA isnt working. Age verification wont work either.
But, age verification will simply be inconvenient for all of us and anything that discourages spending time on some weirdo's private property is a good thing. Who knows, maybe the kids will pick up The Specials album and learn about Thatcher Capitalism, start making Zines and wearing anti-facism patches, go to straight edge shows, volunteer at food pantries, trade goods. Maybe their Hacktivist friends will archive and distribute real knowledge from the internet and become champions of neo-disestablishmentariansm. Maybe they will just spend more time being a part of their reality and less time in someone else's.
Just because some things on the internet are good things, doesnt make the internet as a whole a good place. Good parents will empower their children when they need to. Bad parents are too uninvolved to give their kids unfettered access to the russian roulette of the internet and expect a good outcome. It's not like a library full of self-affirming literature waiting to be discovered. It's an apartment building full of people with unaddressed mental health issues waiting for someone to walk down their hallway.
Bought SMT V for the weird, Japanese culture pushing the envelope thing. I was not ready for how far they would push that envelope. Not upset by it, just astonished. I was expecting NIS levels, but I think this honestly pushes past them. Even with expecting the Mt. Fuji forest stuff that Persona gives, I wasnt ready for the commitment to the uncomfortable human sin themes that I expect from some of the weirder anime.
Also not expecting a min/max creature breeder, which is peak. SMT is like a less Shonen version of all those very Shonen Pokemon rom hacks. Less thirst, somehow, but skipping to min/max breeding right away is a Poke veteran dream. I wouldn't mind a shiny system that uses full-moon breeding. I would reserve a spot for a dark red mermaid variant.

After a few months of playing Crimson Desert, it is definitely a game made by AI-assisted programmers. Palworld has the same tells. Disjointed gameplay systems, because AI works best when it is set to small chunk tasks. Systems that feel copy paste from other games because AI works best with strong references. Disjointed thematically because AI is best when used for quantity, not quality. A lot of systems that operate well, but not great because AI workflows result in too much code for QA to pour through, so it is often reduced to bug hunting and not refinement. Also it is made by a South Korean team and South Korean society have a very positive attitude about using AI. South Korea is leading the way in AI Jank titles. The Japanese seem to have the built-in social respect for hand-craft mastery that will slow their adoption of AI. Everyone else seems to struggle to make games under their western mismanagement.
AI can do a lot of things, but playing through 15 hours of campaign, editing the footage, grabbing a public domain copy, also one of the most haunting versions, of Moonlight Sonata from the US National library and remastering it to be listenable, and putting it all together in a cohesive ode to one of the greatest things PlayStation has made is not on that list.
