a/n; Ive had this idea since I actually started watching mitm and interacting with the fandom! This one feels kinda long but I actually have another part to come after it so look for that! completely unrelated but i don’t know if you guys are aware that I write in my notes app. If not, now you are! but some of the different stories are in the same note and last night i deadass thought I deleted the idea/outline for this one when i did something to the taboo draft.
summary; Reese wasn't used to being so distanced from the person that's been a constant in his life for years. This has nothing to do with his brothers, it's you. Reader faces a dilemma and must decide what to do with you and Reese's relationship.
warnings ! not many I can think of! Reader is slightly mad at Reese in some parts so its kinda 'angsty'
Just as you feel yourself begin to drift off to sleep you hear several small taps on your window. Then the sound of someone crashing into the cherry blossom bush below your window.
You listen closely to see if you can hear a groan that follows after
And of course you can, which confirms it’s Reese.
You get up to open your window and help Reese up to your room. It’s not like this is a new or foreign thing for the two of you. He’s being sneaking into your room in the middle of the night for as long as you can remember
Before it meant anything.
Before it was for hushed moans and whimpers or desperate touches in the latest times of the night.
And way before the day the two of you agreed to let the dynamic of your relationship grow
He rolls clumsily onto your floor while you grab his arm to give him balance
“Dewey relayed your message to me about you wanting to talk-“ He looked so excited that you felt bad for the news you had to break, “But I wanted to do it before you could!”
You falter for a second when he drops on one knee and holds a ring box in one hand and a bouquet of flowers in the other, “Okay, before you totally freak it’s just a promise ring. I’m saving the real thing for like— your birthday or something!”
“Well that wasn’t really what I wanted to talk about, Reese”
His smile doesn’t falter, “well then what did you wanna talk about?”
“I think we should break up for now.”
He drops the flowers and the box the promise ring came in.
Never in the 12 years he’s known you has he ever seen you so serious.
“Why? Did I do something wrong?” he gets up from his position on the floor and grabs at your arm desperately
Trying to think of any solutions that could fix this, “If I did i’m so sorry and I won’t do it again whatever it is i did I promise”
“No, Reese you didn’t do anything wrong.” you pause, “I don’t think either of us did. I don’t even know if i’ve made the right choice yet.”
You squeeze his arm back in an attempt at comfort.
“I just got accepted into scad and I just don’t know what that means for us.” you look at him longingly and wait for any form of reaction, “It’s not that I think you don’t take your life seriously or that I knew you wouldn’t get a letter back— It’s just that you don’t even give yourself a chance”
You start on what you thought would be a painfully long monologue.
“i wanted to tell you sooner but—" you begin to speak with your hands and stutter on your words, “scad is just so far away and I just didn’t know how you’d handle it and i-“
“Okay. I just want you to be happy.”
There’s a beat of silence as you drop your hands.
“what?”
He repeats himself but this time with emphasis on his words.
“I just want you to be happy.”
Apparently you did hear him right.
“I know how big of a deal scad and going down to georgia for school is for you.” He doesn’t break eye contact, “That’s your dream, and I shouldn’t take that away from you.”
“So, I just want you to be happy.”
It was the first time in your life Reese never fought back against your words.
You can’t even get your mouth to form any response to stop him— maybe even show some sympathy.
He turns to leave but stops when one foot is halfway out the window, “We’re still all good though, right? Like we can keep hanging out”
“Of course, Reese” You give him a soft and guilty smile that consistently falters throughout your words “I don’t know anyone else I’d rather spend my time with.”
With that you help him come down from your window and send him off back into the night
You close your window and plop on your bed to really think about the choice you just made
was that really my final decision ?
the next morning you stop at his house to catch a ride to school as you always do. Reese comes out of the house first as malcom closely tracks out after him.
the both of you stop in front of each other trying to figure out how you should greet each other now.
You guys were so used to being comfortable enough to hold hands or hug or do literally anything else
and all you could contribute was an awkward half-assed hug?
“So uh-“ He avoids eye contact, “I planned for us to go on a picnic tonight but that was before you-“ He falters for a second, “before you told to me you were going back on your word”
Something about the way he phrases it stings in a way you’ll never be able to describe
“We can still go, like I said everything is cool with us.”
He nods in agreement and with that, the rest of the ride to school is in pure silence.
Reese had showed up earlier than you had agreed and you can tell he dressed up nicely.
He invited himself in as usual.
'I thought we agreed on 7:30?"
"Well, yeah but I needed to grab something"
You scrunch your face in confusion, "You needed to grab something from my house?"
"For your own sake, don't worry about it."
"Wasn't going to..." He's acting weird but he hasn't given you enough of a reaction to understand why, "We should probably head out now."
You both settle in as he pulls out of your driveway.
The car is oddly quieter than normal for the two of you.
Too quiet.
Reese breaks the silence first, “Do you want me to play something?” he looks at you excitedly, “I stole some cds from your shelf while i was waiting for you!”
You look at him but not in annoyance like you always do. Instead, it was nostalgia.
You give him a soft smile— no, a longing, pleading, an almost desperate smile.
But you never say any of that out loud “Not gonna let you get away with those but sure.”
“Sweet!”
He grabs the one he had seemingly already prepared, you can only assume so after looking down at his lap to watch him grab it from the cup holder on his door.
He waves the cd at you without giving you a chance to look at what it is. He pops the disk into the rundown stereo, while it gives you a chance to look at the cd case
fuck.
Soldier Of Love by Sade. You knew it was his favorite cd you had ever shared with him as it was essentially you and Reese’s ‘album’.
Reese desperately switches his focus between you and the stereo while he skips through the songs.
Looking for one very specific track.
“There’s nothing, nothing that you have to do”
He’s 100% doing this on purpose.
He keeps looking at you when it’s a lyric relevant to your situation.
“In another time, girl”
“Your tears won’t leave a trace”
you’re completely avoiding eye contact and he does everything in his power to get you to look at him
“In another time, girl”
Even leaning forward in the driver’s seat to catch your eyes
“In another pla-“
You reach over and pause the cd before sade can finish her line, “Reese, pull over.”
“wait- please I’m sorry I’ll-“
“Pull. Over.”
After he finally finds a spot you look at him before you grab his jaw softly to make him turn towards you,
“Reese, please don’t make this harder than it needs to be. For the sake of either you or me.”
“I can’t just drop everything I said and change my mind”You drop your hand from it’s position wrapped around his chin, “I still need time to look around, look at my options, literally anything.”
“Of course you’re one of the things on the current rotation in my mind right now”
you squeeze his hand, “that’s not even a question.”
You force yourself to let go of his hand, letting both of them drop
“I just” You stop to look at him, “I think I just need some time still.”
Reese is awkwardly silent
“No- I mean yea- like no yeah of course”
he nods his head to himself and drums his fingers on the steering wheel.
He speaks while dragging the end of his sentence out
“of course.”
You turn to look out the window again before your silence is interrupted.
“So if you were to give me an estimate, about how long do you think it’d take you to make up your m-“
“Drop it, Reese.” you turn to look at him “I mean it this time. There’s no caving in for me.” You pause, “You know how much I love you.”
You avoid eye contact with him out of shame
“-And you know how much I always will, I just really need the space right now”
“I get it. I just thought it didn’t hurt to try”
You turn to look at him again
“I know.”
As the night went on the tension had been eased just enough that it’d make sense for Reese to still walk you to the door when you were getting dropped off.
He was telling you a story about a girl he thought he was in love with during his freshman year, before you guys had gotten together that summer
His reasoning?
She was as close as he could get to being with you.
“Everything I did was so stupid back then. All for some dumb girl I didn’t want anyway”
You pull your key out to unlock your door and stop to put it in, “you were in love.” you drag out the end of your sentence, “Can’t blame anyone for that, right.”
“I never meant it though. Didn’t mean anything compared to how i say it to you.”
The tension in the air from earlier came rushing back all at once.
You pause for a moment.
Unsure on how to react, you continue unlocking your door.
You turn around as you push through your front door and close it slowly, only looking at him as the door closes.
“Goodnight, Reese.”

Now, I’m displaced with my three younger brothers. I’ve become their protector, their parent, their hope. We sleep side by side and I try to make them feel safe, even when I’m scared too.
