Maybe it’s that the force bond made them both start to have a fuzzy experience of the distinction between Self and Other, but they BOTH make the same fatal mistake: they imagine that the other person will do what they would do, rather than realizing that they’re a distinct person with different goals and ideas.

So Rey thinks that “Ben Solo” would do what she’d do after a lifetime of being headfucked and nearly murdered by an uncle and such, which is reach for the Light at the first chance! If it were her, she’d jump at the opportunity to shed the horror and tyranny and try to be cleaner and more free.

And Kylo thinks that Rey would do what he’d do after a lifetime of being helpless and alone, abandoned by junkie parents and sold into slavery and miserable - reach for power, reach for anger, make the galaxy bend for the wrongs it’s done you.

They’re not making persuasive arguments in the other person’s language; they’re arguing from what they’d find convincing. So he offers her a throne and the galaxy and she offers him the Light and nobody is convinced lol. It’s almost as if they try and blunder terribly to do emotional labor for each other rather than her trying to simply do emotional labor for him… as much as she thought she could sell him on the Light Side, he genuinely thought he could sell her on Team Anger as the best way to soothe her pain, since he truly believes in it. He thinks the best thing for her would be to join up and start reading the Team Anger newsletter and maybe torturing that guy who owned her on Jakku or whatever.
