There’s a thin line between platonic and romantic. It’s so thin that you fear you’ve already crossed it. It’s hard to be platonic with someone that looks so good and smells so heavenly and does everything for you.
It’s hard. It’s really hard.
And Arthur makes it harder every day. He holds doors open for you, he makes food for you even when you insist that you aren’t hungry, he keeps you close when the two of you are watching a horror movie—all too close, too cozy.
He’s nice. He’s always been nice to everyone he meets. You can’t think about it too much—you won’t. Yet you lie awake each night wondering if something could change between the two of you.
Maybe he has these thoughts too. Maybe Arthur stares at the ceiling for an hour before bed every night just to think about you. To yearn for you.
It’s unlikely. Impossible, even. Someone like Arthur has no time for a relationship, and certainly not with someone like you. You’re his closest friend. You’ve seen him at his worst, at his best, and been there for most of his achievements.
It would be weird to change that. Arthur is happy with platonic flirting for the camera—it’s all he’s ever known. Jokes, laughter, cameras.
Sometimes, just like now, he’ll do it without the cameras. He’ll shift a little too close to be considered friendly but not close enough for you feel the spark he has for you.
In fact, you’re completely oblivious.
You tense when he kicks his legs over your thighs. A casual, friendly thing that should be nothing more than a comfortable seating position for the two of you.
Your hands hover over his legs, and shakily lower to rest on his ankles. He doesn’t notice your breath hitch. His eyes are glued to the TV screen in front of him, lips slightly quirked as he gets lost in the documentary.
He looks so pretty like this. The sunset glows against his skin, making his eyes shimmer with something deeper than their natural glow.
His curls are perfectly placed, his bottom lip is between his teeth, and he looks unreal.
Your heart flutters, butterflies bite at your stomach, and you feel sick.
You stand up abruptly, forcing his legs off of your lap. He jumps, twists his head to look you up and down. Usually, when you do this, it’s because of a spider.
Which he looks for. Over the sofa, over you, he looks for it. Doesn’t find it.
“You okay?” He laughs, a little confused.
Your brows pinch together, and you look around frantically.
“Yeah. I’m—water. I’m gonna go get some water.” You point vaguely behind you, completely missing the kitchen despite living in this apartment for years.
Arthur nods, gives you one more smile before turning his attention back to the screen. He crosses his legs, and he’s clearly too big to sit on the sofa like that, but he does it anyway.
You manage to get to the fridge without falling over, which is a success in your books. The kitchen is behind the sofa—a very similar layout to Bach and Liv’s apartment—and from this angle you can see Arthur’s curls properly.
Such a beautiful colour. Curled perfectly as though he does it himself every single day. You know that he doesn’t. You know that he wakes up like that and it makes it so much worse to deal with.
You almost drop the glass before you put the water in, and Arthur turns his head to make sure you’re okay.
So caring. So eager to help. So Arthur.
“I’m good!” You call, not daring to look over in his direction. Eye contact is not what you need right now.
Once you’ve got your water, you return to the sofa, but you don’t sit on it. You hover around it, running your fingers along the fabric as if to appreciate each thread of cotton.
He glances over in your direction, but you make an effort to keep your eyes off of him. Suddenly, the stains in the carpet have become a much more interesting topic than the man beside you.
He shifts, and you hear it. He’s uncomfortable, doesn’t know what to say, and he probably fucking hates you.
You knew it.
You made it weird. You’ve never successfully liked the company of another person without making it weird. Always too much or never enough. Present, but not really there.
He then grabs your attention by clearing his throat and pointing at the screen.
“Did you know that…” Arthur’s ramble begins. Usually, you’ll listen. It’s so easy for you to get lost in what he’s saying.
He speaks so fluently. Despite his occasional stutter, his voice is laced with something hypnotic.
This time, you can’t focus on a damn word. His hands are moving, his lips are trying to spill an interesting fact, but you don’t hear him.
Your intense staring soon becomes a daydream.
“What’s wrong?” He sighs, arms folding over his chest. Your head turns first, then your gaze follows.
“What?”
“You’re being weird.” You can tell that despite his confusion he’s trying to be subtle with his questions. He’s being careful not to touch on a particular subject in case he’s right.
He wants you to tell him. God knows he’ll listen for hours.
“I’m just—” You set your glass of water down, glance over to the front door, and shrug. “I’m not feeling too well. Can you—I’ll see you soon?”
Arthur’s expression twists into something akin to hurt. Betrayal, almost. This is the first time you’ve kicked him out of your apartment, and you can see the frustration in his hues.
His lips part, only to close again upon realisation that there’s nothing to say. He nods, slips his shoes on at the door, and gives you a small hug.
You shut the door after he leaves, sinking down to sit with your back against the wood.
Shortly after, you receive a text from him.

What does that even mean?
You’re fine.
You’re just stressed. Tired, maybe. You’re not going to let these feelings get in the way of your friendship with Arthur.
You don’t talk for a week. You don’t reply to any of his texts, you ignore all of his calls and your online presence is nonexistent for those seven days.
You’re trying to get over him on your own. Whatever you feel for him clearly isn’t reciprocated and rejection is not something that you’re mentally ready to handle.
You think you’re getting somewhere. You’ve done so much self care that you’re worried you’ll have nobody to call a friend after this.
You go an entire day without thinking about Arthur.
Until it hits 6pm and there’s a knock at your door.
It’s Arthur. Of course it is.
Flowers in hand, dressed up all nice like he’s going to take you on a date. How foolish of you to even consider. He gives you a smile, opens his arms for a hug, and frowns when you simply shift aside to let him in.
He kicks his shoes off, sets the flowers down on the kitchen counter, and shuts all of the blinds to emphasise the warm lighting in the apartment.
“Wrong house?” You ask. It’s not a joke, more of a petty comment that goes unnoticed. Arthur is a little too bad at reading social cues.
“No. I wanted to come and check on you. Thought I’d buy you some flowers on my way to cheer you up.” You’re pacing the living room, and he’s watching you like you’re a lunatic.
His lunatic.
There’s something in his eyes. He isn’t judging you, but he’s worried.
“Ah, jolly.” You nod, mostly talking to yourself. You glance over to the flowers on the counter.
“How did you know those were my favorite?” Your voice is harsh, and the conversation could be mistaken for an interrogation if you carry on.
Arthur doesn’t mind.
“You mentioned them. Like—once. A few years ago when we first met.” He shrugs, acting as though the gesture is normal.
As if it’s normal to remember one sentence that happened three years ago.
You let out a breath, but it gets lost in the air. You’re practically lifeless in front of him; still, quiet, and pale as a ghost.
“Are you avoiding me?” Arthur huffs, and you can tell that it took everything in him to actually ask the question.
Your lips part to reply, but he cuts you off before you can speak.
“Because, if you are, that’s fine. Like, that’s so fine. In fact, I would say that’s good. Great even.” You tilt your head, a little confused as to where this is going.
“You want me to avoid you?” You ask.
His eyes widen, hands come up defensively.
“What? No! I don’t. I just—you’re allowed your space. I just want to know if I did something wrong. I didn’t mean to upset you. I promise.” He’s rambling, hoping to save whatever friendship the two of you still have.
You don’t know what to say. All that you can do is press your lips into a thin line and hope he gets the message. You don’t want to talk.
You can’t talk.
He looks hopeless, but not entirely defeated. He takes a step forward, and the intensity of it all bites at your skin.
“I’m sorry if I made things weird. Or if I pushed too far with a joke or something. Man, I really like you. You’re my favorite person. I just wanted to—” His voice is cut short when you let out a confused hum.
“What?”
“What do you mean, what?” He breathes. It could be mistaken for a laugh. He’s trying to lighten the mood, you think.
“You like me?” Your muscles relax, your shoulders drop, and a wave of relief washes over you.
You search his face for any lick of sarcasm or uncertainty. Your lips twitch when there is none.
“Yes? I thought that was a little obvious. Is that not why you’ve been avoiding me?” He looks nervous now.
“Well, no. Yes, but not quite.” You vaguely gesture to him with your hands, but he only tilts his head at you like a lost puppy.
“You’ve lost me.” He says.
“I like you. I really like you, Art. That’s why I’ve been so distant. I didn’t want to shove my feelings onto you and expect you to feel the same. That’s not what I wanted. Didn’t want to pressure you or ruin our friendship or—”
Your attention snaps back to reality when you feel a hand on the side of your neck. Your eyelashes flutter, and he’s right there. Right in front of you.
His breath is hot on your skin, and he holds you with so much pride.
And before you can say anything else, he catches your lips in a sweet kiss. Not rough, but eager.
Like he’s waited for it his entire life.
You’re pretty certain that you have, too.
He pulls away to admire each of your features up close, smiles when he finds nothing but pure beauty before him.
“You could never ruin our friendship.” He slips his hand down, snakes it over your wrist and laces his fingers between yours. “And you never need to run from me. There’s nothing to run from. I want to care for you and—hell, whether that’s as a friend or a boyfriend, it doesn’t matter.”
You nod, timidly glance down to your feet, and shift your weight awkwardly.
“I would much prefer it if you did that as a boyfriend.” You mutter.
He smiles. It’s more of a grin, really.
“Boyfriend it is.” He hums, leaning in to press a kiss to your temple.
