Epel: pretty sure I failed an Arabic exam.
Vil: Ah, so you’re disappointing in two languages now.
Yuu/Player/Perfect: Are we ignoring the fact that Rook quoted freaking Tomas Garrigue Masaryk?!! None of us here are Czech!
[yes, that is an actual quote by Tomas Masaryk, the first prime minister of Czechoslovakia]
Kalim: How do I explain this school to my younger siblings?
Jamil: Night Ravens College is an highly elaborate Rube Goldberg style system where everyone is working very very hard to achieve absolutely nothing.
Deuce: Mama ain’t raised no fool. I’m a little slow but that’s not the same thing.
Silver: Excuse the interruption, father. Something’s going on.
Lilia: Silver, you realise your sole use to me right now is to supply meaningful and intelligible nouns and adverbs in place of the word something in sentences like that?
Silver: Yes, but sometimes they don’t issue me with enough nouns from the stores.
Lilia: The cheapskates…
Pubsec Officer: Uh, Hello, I'm here with the City for a Random inspection.

Wise: *Closes door, picks up Eous* Eous ... We are so fucked.
Pubsec officer: Oh my God! What’s this?

Pubsec officer: Very funny.
Wise: No, I’m serious.
Pubsec officer: *knocks the nail down. A distant rumbling is heard.*
Wise: Deus misereatur nostri.

Zenless Zone Zero Incorrect Quotes 4: Obol Squad edition
CW: swearing, vaguely unhinged quotes
Magus: Wise and Belle have done well navigating the hollow for us. We should send them some roses.
Orphie: And the Cunning Hares? What should we give them?”
Magus: Fifty lashes.
Orphie: I’m uncomfortable killing people for money.
Seed: I understand Orphie. I’m the same way. I too prefer doing it for sport.
Orphie: …
Magus: …
Trigger: Forgiveness is between them and God.

Trigger: It’s my job to arrange the meeting.
Seed: Some would say I need psychological help, but I’m having the time of my life.
Soldier 11: You’re a piece of work. I’ve only known you for about twenty-four hours and you get me into this shit.
Trigger: Just imagine what I could do if I was really trying”
*Latter, in an enclosed space with a group of Exaltists, multiple large ethereals and a particularly angry lemur*
Soldier 11: Is this what you meant? The shit you could get me in if you really tried?
Trigger: Shut up, Soldier 11
Seed: Are you impressed?
Soldier 11, hiding behind cover as some form of HMG fires at her: I’m fucking suppressed.
Isolde: You guys are going to make the decision to hire you guys look like a stroke of pure genius.
Obol Squad, as one: Are you sure about that?

Seth: Here's a list of suspects I've put together so far.
Zhu Yuan: Seth, your name is on this list.
Seth: I don’t remember where I was last Friday night. Therefore I have no alibi. I've been tailing myself for the past three days.
Qingyi: Jane… you look rather smug there. Got something to share?
Jane: Hm… nothing…

We have a Code for Everything (Zenless Zone Zero)
[Headcanon: to help prevent PTSD by further dehumanizing ethereals, the New Eridu defense force has code names that are markedly distinct from the common names for ethereals]
*Seed Jr. reading a book, as Wise walks up*
Wise: Hey Seed, what you got there?
Seed nodding: Studying up on the codes.
Wise: Codes?
Seed: Yes. To help prevent humanizing ethereals and to help make the job easier, the defense force has a code for every type of ethereal. For example, a Thanatos is called 'Traxis-1', while Hatis are called 'Sigma-Minoris-33', as opposed to 'Sigma-Majoris-33' which refers to Energized Hatis.
Wise: I see. So why are you reading it?
Seed: Because Eleven and Trigger asked me to explain it to Magus. She constantly gets them wrong.
Wise: I mean, how bad can it be.
Seed: ....
Magus, seeing a Dullahan: Traxis... something, something, er...
Trigger: Traxis-7?
Magus: Is that the Dullahan?
Trigger: ...
Magus, seeing shatterbugs: Gamma... 15 was it? Er, just the explody ones.
Soldier 11: Gamma-315, thank you very much.
Magus, seeing a Farbauti: Traxis... 12. Yeah, Traxis-12.
Seed: Magus...
Magus: ...
Soldier 11: ...
Trigger: .... *sigh* Theta-65-Gamma
Wise: ... That bad?
Seed: There isn't even a Traxis-12!
Trigger, walking up: Well, there wasn't, though with the amount of sacrifice ethereals you keep running into, there probably might soon be a Traxis-12.
Zenless Zone Zero X Darktide Character Comparison Analysis; Trigger and Cut throat Veteran
Warning: Long post ahead, and me overthinking two game characters
So, there has been two games I have been playing a lot of lately; Zenless Zone Zero and Darktide, which is set within the Warhammer 40k Universe.
One thing I have noticed while playing these is that despite the rather sharp and distinct tonal differences, they act as surprisingly good foils, in everything from aesthetic (ZZZ's bright, anime, early 2000s aesthetic vs Darktides rather Dark, grim, and science fantasy aesthetics), music (street techno a lot of the times vs Gothic/Catholic choir meet techno), and themes (hope in the face of horrors vs despair, but continuing anyways).
However, the biggest way is the fact that characters from the game share similarities but also distinct differences that can be read as being foils to each other. And that (or rather one example) is what I want to explore. That of Trigger in ZZZ and the Cut throat Veteran in Darktide.
First things first, I should probably explain this before continuing; Darktide's gameplay is largely done through classes, with you creating a character for that class like in an RPG. However, each class has three personalities you can choose from, which acts as a character in there own right. So for those who are curious, the class is 'Veteran' and the personality is 'Cut throat'.
Let's start with the similarities.
Both Trigger and the Cut throat fulfil a role of being sniper/sharpshooters. Trigger is explicitly a sniper, while the Veteran class is called the sharpshooter, being the class that places a higher emphasis of using ranged weapons, and using said weapons to pick off priority enemies like the specials foes or monstrous enemies.
They also both have a capability for melee. Trigger's rifle has a blade (of sort) on it, whereas veteran has access to a wide array of melee weapons (as both games rely on a mixture of both melee and ranged combat).
However, that's the surface level stuff. The bigger similarities and where the majority of differences are in personality and background.
The Cut throat is unique, as it can only be selected if you chose your home world to be Cadia. For those of you who know 40k lore, first off, CADIA STANDS!!! For those who don't know, basically, it was a fortress world that stood watch over a tear in reality called the Eye of Terror. Then a Chaos incursion occurred, and due to shenanigans, they cracked the planet's crust open like a nut. Physically, there is no Cadia anymore, but the Cadian lifestyle is still very much alive.
This mirrors Trigger, as the Old capitol of Eridu was consumed Hollow Zero, resulting in the creation of New Eridu, where ZZZ takes place. These events also does funny things with the eyes of people. Trigger's eyes would suffer ethereal corruption that leads to her having amazing sight of ether in the hollows, and effectively blind outside of the hollow. Meanwhile, due to the close proximity to the eye of terror, Cadians developed a mutation of purple or violet eyes, options reserved only for them in the character creator.
It's also now where we start to see the foiling. Trigger is scarred by the events, which leads to her character story which helps provide her with closure for the event, as well motivating her to find the truth about Hollow Zero. Furthermore, her personality is largely that of being well-mannered, caring, and overall a rather nice person, which is shown quiet well in her character demo trailer.
The Cut throat, for their part... well... their voice sample might explain it best (italics and bolds added for emphasis based on voice acting)
"I watched a world die. Eight thousand year of defiance, gone in an eyeblink. With it, went some of the finest soldiers I had the honour to serve alongside. Not for glory. Not for victory. Not even for defiance. But because sooner or later the void swallows everything. I learned something that day: no world, no bastion - maybe no faith - is impregnable. The agents of the enemy are everywhere. Watching. Plotting. Waiting. Only thing to be done with heresy is to root it out with fire and steel."
... Yeah, the cut throat is called such because they have become very cynical after the traumatic experience of fighting and seeing their home world die. That the void will swallow all, and ultimately, all is moot. As such, they have become ruthless, seeking to fight their foe for vengeance. This ruthlessness can be seen in many of their lines for activating 'Voice of Command'.
"Get in there! Make them scream!"
"Give 'em the old Kasrkin double tap!"
"If you can breath, you can kill!"
"CLOSE! KILL! AND DO IT AGAIN!"
Of course, this is also where something funny occurs: they both meet back up again, albeit for different reasons.
Despite the Cut throat being the most hostile personality for the Veteran class (compared to Professional and Loose-canon), they routinely do have moments of being good. This includes believing that abhumans (non standard humans) have souls (something explicitly denied by the Imperial cult), show concern for non-combatants, and be surprisingly supportive when reviving allies, leading to my favorite interaction in the whole game.
Cut throat: Breath, good and steady. The pain will pass.
Loose-canon Veteran (female): Because I’m going to live through it right?
Cut throat: … The pain will pass.
Fem Loose-canon: Because I’m going to live through it right? Right?
They also get along well with the Savant Psyker (space wizards), whereas the other personalities straight up do not like psykers, period. The Cut throat has a motivation for these nicer actions; they saw the fall of Cadia. They lost friends, family, and fellow soldiers, and one interpretation is that they act the way they do so as to not get hurt again, and to make sure others don't get hurt either.
Trigger, for her part, shows the same concerns, and has the same reasoning, but also still remains fundamentally, a good person. She has been a stalwart ally to the proxies, and soldier 11 for a long time. She also doesn't want to see more people who treat her as family being hurt either.
Perhaps the best way to sum up the differences and similarities in personalities between Trigger and Cut throat is with these two dialogues.
Trigger (lost void, and used a heavy attack to defeat a boss, talking with proxy): "Stepping into Hollow Zero once again… I kind of feel like playing the harmonica. I want to tell those resting here that I'm fine… I've been through a lot, made like-minded companions, and haven't brought shame upon them. And if they could hear this melody… they'd know I have you by my side — someone truly precious.
Cut Throat Veteran: I'm getting used to having you around, big man! Brawler Ogryn: Thank you, Sah! I like you too Sah! Cut Throat: Didn't say I like you. I don't like anyone. That's weakness. And I don't do weakness. Brawler: I like you anyways Sah! Cut Throat: [silence, probably stunned silence]
Both are caring... but the Cut throat has it buried rather deep compared to Trigger... also, the veteran class has code words for all enemy types, and now it has become headcanon that New Eridu defense force does the same.
Zenless Zone Zero incorrect quotes #2
Belle: The Cunning Hares could fight and defeat 90% of the ethereals in the world. Whenever we cooperate they then proceed to keep fighting that 10% they can’t defeat.
Qingyi: You’ve made something that offends both God and the Communist Party — an impressive failure.
Zhu Yuan: Thanks?
Alice: Its not like Yuzuha will appear out of nowhere.
Yuzuha, rising out of the ground for drama: Speak of the devil and I shall appear.
Alice: *incoherent screaming for the next minute*
Wise: Simply cut the red wire.
Anby: They're both purple.
Narration: Wise then spent the next minute swearing in a mix of Polish and Korean.
Seth: I've only got room for one lethally dangerous woman in my life.
Jane: I choose to take that as a compliment…
Yixuan: You lot look tired…
Ju Fufu: *nods numbly*
Yixuan: Get up. There is no God here.
Caesar: I agree with Burnice’s plan. Good minds think a like.
Lucy: Yes, but so do damaged minds. That’s why we have names for mental illnesses.
Lighter, helping Harumasa up: Breath, good and steady. The pain will pass.
Harumasa: Because I’m going to live through it right?
Lighter: … The pain will pass.
Harumasa: Because I’m going to live through it right? Right?
Furina: Cut! Lyney, you have to be angry at Freminet. You're supposed to be fighting in this scene, remember?
Lyney: I can't be mad at Freminet! Look at him! It's like trying to be angry at a cinnamon roll!

Vortex of Steel: Worlds at War (test drive)
Hey, so I'm posting this as a sort of testing the water for a massive crossover story involving the following fandoms; Fire Emblem Three Houses, Fire Emblem Fates, Valkyria Chronicles, Iron Harvest 1920+, Genshin Impact and the Marcher: Empires at War tabletop strategy game. I have written a prologue that introduces the Marcher Universe, as well as setting up for the crossover. I want to hear your thoughts about whether or not I should continue this, and posting it on Ao3. Thank you, and enjoy.
Prologue: Screaming Steel
It is 1938, and the world is on the brink of war. But it is not our world, though it mirrors it perhaps in similar, yet alien ways.
It is a world in which science and technology has surpassed our own in certain ways.
Colonies exist in space, accessed through jump gates.
Power armor, and shield generators find a role on battlefields.
The energy rifle and plasma weaponry takes on a battlefield role.
Gravitic Field Manipulators are used for flight, engineering, mining, and industry.
It is also a world that is stuck in the past.
‘Noble’ empires dominate the map, as well as the repression that accompanied those colonial holdings.
Many nations still cling to Monarchies, whether they be of a more divine nature or not.
And as there are colonies in space, colonies remain on the surface of the earth.
In 1938, the machinations of war began in motion, dragging in three massive super alliances.
The first is that of the North Atlantic Alliance Organization.
A belligerent New French Republic has been thrusted into a throw of passion, as Bonapartists and Communists struggle and vy for who calls the shots of this republic. Her oversea colonies are in no better shape, as fighting between Bonapartists, Communists and the Japanese occurs in Indochina, while the North African bloc of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia throw the lot in with the Communist international.
For the communists within France, they find a natural ally with the Socialist Italians.
By their side, the United States of America and the Republic of Argentina provide economic and logistical aid, while the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth and Nordic Union prepare themselves to fight more localised conflicts, even if they fear such prospects.
Opposing them is the League of Five Emperors, a coalition of five empires across the globe.
The Holy Roman Empire remains a steadfast power, and a proud block of traditional conservatism.
The Russian Empire, meanwhile, is in a state of flux. With no clear legitimate heir in the aftermath of a Civil War due to both terrorism and a perceived tainting from Habsburg assistance, the lands of Russia are dominated by Boyars and various corporate conglomerates.
The Empire of Brazil and the Ethiopian Empire both find common cause with the Russians and Habsburg. Although Brazil and Ethiopia are both distant, there exists conditions within the league that calls for them to send Expeditionary forces should the need arise. It is yet to be seen whether or not these forces are deployed. .
The final of the five empires is the Joseon Empire. The Koreans, for their part, have long since been fighting the Japanese, fighting for the rights to claim the inheritance of the dead Qing dynasty in what was once China.
This in turn, draws attention to the third of the major alliances, that of the Anglo-Japanese Pact.
The pact, originally focusing on cooperation between the British Empire and the Japanese Empire, has since grown with those disillusioned by both the old world the League represents, and the new one that the Alliance represents.
The Imperial Protectorate of Great Britain, isolated from the continent, beset by Irish rebels from within, and destabilized from the deaths of multiple monarchs and famines has become the quintessential surveillance state, with an Aetherfleet able to deploy anywhere that needs stabilization, whether that be the vast savannahs of the African Commonwealth, the verdant floodplains of the British Raj, or the dense jungles of British Oceania.
The Empire of Japan, for their part, has left isolation, and has begun seeking to carve its place and name both on Earth and in the stars. For that, the claiming of the cultural, territorial, and political inheritance of the Qing remains a top priority, one that has led to many Korean, Japanese, and Chinese deaths in the trenches of Wuhan and Shanghai.
Monarchical Spain meanwhile throws the gauntlet towards France, a desire to reclaim the lands lost to the French burning with intensity of the forges that once melted Aztec gold.
Maverick Neo Byzantium, in rage, aims for the lands of the Turkish Republic and Safavid Dynasty of Iran, but moreso, eyes the French territories on the shores of North Africa, specifically Tunisia, with a hunger.
The Sultanate of Egypt, seeing equal opportunity to expand into the French North African sands of Tripoli, have aligned with the Brits and the Japanese.
And then there is Gran Colombia, who, simply put, by all accounts, no one knows what the fuck they are doing, as it is usually assumed that they are the British lap dogs, merely acting as the buffer between the southern borders of the United States, and the Brazillians.
As it currently stands, the world is drawing nearer to war. Lines have been drawn, yet no shots fired. Aetherships have lifted off, yet they are not yet found to be clashing in the sky. Tanks and walkers rumble onwards, yet the boom of their guns has yet to be commonplace, except among the testing grounds.
However, as a new year comes into existence, a certain change occurs, ensuring the flames grow brighter than ever before.
For some, this would be a miracle, the advancement of society.
For some, a disaster, wreaking havoc on all that they know.
And for many, an opportunity for allies, resources, and new forms of warfare.
As for those connected, they soon found themselves, in a terrifying, new world…
***
Yakutsk, Siberia, The Russian Empire
It was cold. That part should be obvious. After all, no one expects a city that is 450 kilometers away from the Arctic Circle to be super hot. That said, Yakutsk was a bustling city nonetheless.
The reason becomes obvious when one looks at a certain spot.
Here in Yakutsk, lies one of the 5 Jump gates in existence, the Nikolovsk Gate. Both the gate and the city were created by the Okhotsk Techno Union. The gate connects the lands of the Russian empire with the Nikolovsk System, where the dual colonies of Ledyanoy Shar and the Bolshoi Aetherplex exist.
Ledyanoy Shar remains to be a gold mine of minerals, admittedly while also being a frozen barren hellscape. The Bolshoi Aetherplex meanwhile is a ship that floats in the aether, providing a pleasure palace of sorts to both nobles, technocrats and miners alike.
That said, today would be… distinct.
In one of the control rooms, one of the workers noticed something unusual. He reported it to his floor manager who examined it, and who then reported it to the shift manager, and slowly, it trickled all the way up to the CEO of the Okhotsk Techno Union.
He then, in turn, reported it to the Russian regency council, as well as the other many corporations and oligarchs that now dominate the Russian empire.
Ordinarily, trade secrets that one stumbles on should remain a secret, an inside tool used to screw over a business rival.
That’s a hell of a lot harder when you discover that your Jump Gate now connects to a second system.
The news was leaked however.
And with that, the trail of gunpowder leading to a world war, became the path to becoming a worlds war.
***
Rockford, Illinois, The United States of America
A short time later, the inconspicuous town of Rockford had their own shock. The town was a small town. I say ‘was’, because here in Rockford, was the world’s first ever Jump Gate, the Concord gate, which ordinarily led to the Concord system.
I say ‘ordinarily’, as a similar thing that occurred at the Nikolovsk gate occurred here.
A second lane was found.
This was also where the rules were broken.
When a ship was sent through this second lane, they found a lush planet.
They also found a Russian ship.
You see, early on during the proliferation of Jump Gates, three common courtesy rules were held via conference in 1880.
One: gate technology cannot be patented, nor can it be privately owned.
Two: Once a gate has been opened for a specific jump lane, no other nation may open another gate on that lane.
Three: Gates may collect taxes and tariffs on passage through the gate, but cannot restrict travel to any nationality except during an emergency.
However, when the conference was held, no one had exactly taken into account the idea that a Jump Gate could open multiple lanes, let alone for two gates that weren’t connected, to both develop a second lane to the same location.
To prevent an armed conflict, the Russian and American ship commanders decided to jointly probe the planet.
Another crack was made, as they found not only life, but sentient ones, and they were frighteningly human. They were quick to learn that they spoke a language that could be understood by the humans of Earth. And there, they learnt the name of the planet.
Teyvat.
***
After this, a cavalcade of similar events occurred, as preexisting Jump gates now connected to new worlds.
The Prince Albert Gate located in Great Britain found a path to a world wherein a continent named ‘Fodlan’ was split between three nations.
Japan’s Shin-Tokaido-Mon Gate, hailed by many in the west as cementing Japan as a major, modern political player found its way to a world in which half the world is covered in sunlight, and the other half in darkness, wherein lies two major powers, dubbed ‘Hoshido’ and ‘Nohr’.
The French Germinal Gate meanwhile found its way to a world that echoes their own, but in which steam and electricity moves forward clockwork mechs.
This also spawned other nations to begin building their own Jump gates.
The Holy Roman Empire’s Ostend Company quickly built a gate in the city of Pécs, dubbing it the Árpád Gate, and found it connected to another world, in which nations exist, powering their lives with ragnite, a form of mineral.
Unfortunately, this is also where the issue of multiple gates ending up on the same space lane resurge.
With aid from Russia and the Holy Roman Empire, Joseon made a gate entitled the Heavenly Gate, connecting them to the land of Fodlan as well. Ethiopia also made the great Solomon Gate, connecting them in turn to the world of Hoshido and Nohr.
Soon, those who already had gates built additional ones as well.
Australia managed to lobby the British parliament to open a second gate in Australia, and it too, led to the world that contained Ragnite.
Russia built a second gate as well in the lands of Kazakhstan, and they found themselves in a world of clockwork mechs as well.
Finally, the US built a second gate in Logan, Utah, which formed a third lane to Fodlan.
As this explosion of Jump Gate proliferation occurred, slowly but surely, an entangling effect has occurred. And as the fires of war stir, one thing remains certain.
The war will expand, and those who are now exposed to this alien world, will soon find themselves hopelessly at the mercy of a new world.

Genshin Impact: Freminet’s monologue
Freminet contemplates about his life, and his outlook on life on the anniversary of his mother’s death day. The dead responds.
(CW: angst, hurt, comfort, contemplations on life, traveler is not specified, taking various quotes and a monologue or two and combining them to create a holistic plot. If you recognize what the main meat of the monologue is, and where it comes from, you get to request me to do a writing prompt of your choice)
Traveler: Hey, Lyney, Lynette, Arlecchino. I think Freminet might need therapy.
Lyney: What makes you say that?
Traveler: *points. Freminet is sitting in a boat, just off the shore*
Freminet: Hey, maman. It’s me. Father told me this maybe the spot of your final resting place. *pulls out a small bloodstained locket*
Freminet: It’s been so long, and I do miss you. Father cares for me, as do Lyney and Lynette, and even the traveler, but I still miss you.
Faint female ghost: I miss you too.
Freminet: Mother?
Faint female voice: Fremi. Your eyes. They look tired. Life has been rough with you hasn’t it.
Freminet, nodding: It’s like a horse race. But actually you’re riding on a carousel, so there’s no chance your horse will overtake the one in front. No one behind you will catch you up. The horse in front is contentment, the horse behind you is death. And there I am. Freminet. Sitting on a plaster fucking horse, unable to get off the fucking carousel. You sure got off the carousel didn’t you?
Freminet’s mother’s ghost: I was spun off. That was not my choosing.
Freminet: No, you got off to stick around in the ocean. It was the ocean where we most easily ourselves. And now look at my life. I’m a saboteur for the Fatui. Not sure if that was the life you wanted for me. I would go alone. Myself. That I would do. But I would not ask my siblings to come with me. Because most of my fellow house of the hearth members are quite keen to live, whereas I am, at best, equivocal.
Ghost: … But you still live. And I know who my son is.
Freminet: Sometimes, I feel like I’m not known to myself.
Ghost: But I do. I’m proud. No matter what. And others do care, and would mourn you. Just as you have me.
Freminet closes his eyes, and lays back in the boat.
Arlecchino: …
Lyney: …
Lynette: …
Traveler: …
Paimon: …
Arlecchino: So, know any good therapists?
Traveler: … I’ll write Mizuki. And I’ll try to set up a hangout with Freminet
Paimon: And Collei as well.
Lyney: Yeah, wait, Collei? Why her?
Paimon: I… think I said too much.
Belle: ive been alive for years and i STILL havent found the right thing to say when someone knocks on the door of a public bathroom youre in
Zhu Yuan: “come back with a warrant” is my go-to
Wise: I tend to reverse it, by saying “come in”
Zhu Yuan: …

Zhu Yuan: … That’s… actually pretty clever
